Saturday morning's conditions were 'pea soup' fog and no wind. After a brief postponement, sailors headed out, only to be fogged in again. By 11 am, the fog lifted sufficiently to begin racing with a 10-knot northerly. Two A-division races were completed before the breeze built excessively. After the race course was shifted to a more protected area, racing resumed.
On Sunday, we had 10-16 knots from the north under clear skies and 60-65 degrees. Boats: 420's. 10 Races were completed in each Division over the two days of racing. One protest was filed and heard.

Team Racing is Exciting
David Altshuler
I recently attended the Aaron Szambecki Team Race Regatta in Norfolk, VA. It was a great time and my entire team learned a lot about team racing. Statistically, we didn’t fare very well, however, we were competitive in all of our races. This can be attributed largely to the senior leadership on our team. We have taken time to focus on team racing this spring and it has paid off.
I am looking forward to a great regatta at the Big Ten Team Race right here at the University of Michigan. I’m excited to see everyone on and off the water. Please, please, please contact me with any comments, questions, or concerns. 313.407.0307 or dba@umich.edu

Saturday: Great weather, unlike what was forecast, allowed us to complete 8 races in A and B division. All 420 races were C5 Gold Cups. Thanks to all the teams that arrived at the sailing sight early, we were able to get started quickly. The first few hours were sailed in an 8-10 knot oscillating breeze with puffs of 12 knots. Two races were sailed in a light 5-6 knot wind before the wind shut off at about 2pm and filled in at about 3:30 out of the SSW at 12 knots. This stayed with us for the remainder of the day. We had 7 lasers on the course today in our unofficial "C" division.. In all we had over 75 people at the regatta.
Sunday: We were welcomed to Lake Wauburg with nice breeze out of the NNW. Typical shifts and large puffs made racing very competitive. Keeping in mind that some teams had an 18 hour drive back home, only four races in A and B divisions were sailed and 7 in C division. Two protest were heard with no changes to the final results. Boats: 420.
Drew Plominski 08 sailed for Miami in C Division.

Goals
Spring Sailing is here! For most sailors there are 8 or less weeks of school and those weeks will fly by. It’s important to be organized and prepared in order for your team to accomplish their goals this season. At Midwinters, we talked about S.M.A.R.T. goals. Below is a review of what S.M.A.R.T. means.
Specific
What are you trying to accomplish, exactly?
Measurable
How will you know when you have succeeded?
Attainable
What tacks will you take?
Realistic
Know your limits
Timely
How much time are you willing to commit? Short-term? Long-term?
Now a few questions to consider with your team:
- What were the goals we set?
- In what ways is our team working to accomplish those goals?
- Are our goals S.M.A.R.T.?
- Have our goals changed in any way?
- Are we giving new team members opportunities to get involved?
- Are we sharing with other teams and using them as a resource?
- Are we having fun???????
Have a fun and successful sailing season. Jenn Hockema jkhockema@gmail.com

Practice & Connections
Vice Commodore - Ben Miller-Todd
As lakes begin to thaw out, boats come out of storage, and regatta season begins, effective practice is probably the next obstacle that needs to be tackled. I know that practicing with a goal in mind is sometime a difficult task, especially when a perfect spring day pops up and all that comes to mind is sailing with no particular plan in mind. On the contrary, practicing with a set plan is exactly what everyone needs to go to the lake with. Working on roll tacks, mark roundings, starts, and tactics can be a tedious and not very exciting practice plan, but without practicing these skills, you cannot expect to greatly improve your standings at regattas.
I have found that practice is more exciting and effective if a set skill is worked on during the first half of practice while everyone is focused. During the second half of practice move on to whatever individual sailors need to work on with a race or two at the end for fun. This basic plan allows the skill for a practice to be based on the weather at the lake and it also allows some freedom for individual needs. This is a simple idea but it does not make an entire practice overly focused on a single skill. As a member of a team with a majority of members who are inexperienced sailors, I can understand the need for having fun on the water as well as practicing. If new sailors are not interested in sailing and they do not have fun at practices, the new members will leave and the team will have to start building all over again. The point is that you need a plan for practices to be effective, but every plan needs to be tailored to the needs of your team.
Another issue that always seems to be at the forefront of many of my club’s meetings is the issue of membership. Our club is teetering on the edge of its undergrad to non-students ratio of 50%-50%. It is always a battle to gain new members and inform the campus as a whole about the team and club activities. I have heard from multiple people that different website databases like Facebook are great recruiting tools as well as open houses with barbeques and activities. I have come to the conclusion that no matter what works for a club/team, it must be fun and inviting as well as create a connection between the new and old members. Without a connection, the new members will not feel welcome and will find other clubs on campus to join.

Freshman Icebreaker
Notre Dame
March 25-26, 2006
Despite the classic Midwest regatta weather and St. Joe's lake wind shifts, the Freshman Icebreaker was a successful regatta. On Saturday, the morning began with cloudy sky and shifty winds mainly out of the northwest at 3-6 in the morning building slightly as the day went on. The weather as the day progressed included sleet, snow, hail, and rain, with a little bit of sun every now and then. Ten races in both A and B divisions were completed. Windward Leeward twice around and triangle windward leewards were sailed. Only one boat filed for a breakdown after a broken tiller extension. One protest was filed.
On Sunday the remaining 6 races were sailed completing the rotation. Winds on Sunday were very light and shifty with temperatures in the 30s. All courses were windward leeward twice around.
The new Notre Dame Freshman Icebreaker trophy was awarded to the Winning Team Michigan Maize.

The MCSA Welcomes Three New Members
The MCSA has three new schools sailing this Spring. Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, Whittenberg College in Lakewood, Ohio, and Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio.
In their first outing at the Notre Dame Freshman Regatta Owens was very impressive taking a second place over-all.
Whittenberg also showed that they were ready to sail finishing 5th at Purdue's Neil Johnson Memorial Regatta.
Oakland University's A Division was third in the Neil Johnson Memorial Regatta, a good start for this new school.
