Freshman Icebreaker
Notre Dame
March 24-25, 2007
Despite the classic St. Joe's Lake wind shifts, the Freshman Icebreaker was a successful regatta. On Saturday the morning began with cloudy sky and shifty winds mainly out of the northwest at 3-6 in the morning building slightly as the day went on. 8 races in both A and B divisions were completed. Windward Leeward twice around and triangle windward leewards were sailed. Two boats filed for a breakdown. No Protests were filed
On Sunday the remaining 4 more races were sailed in each division completing the rotation. Winds Sunday were about 6 with occasional puffs reaching 7 but temperatures in the upper sixties made for a very enjoyable day of sailing Courses were windward leeward twice around and windward leeward three times around. One breakdown for a broken tiller extension and two protests were filed.

St. Mary's Women's Intersectional
St. Mary's College of Maryland
March 17-18, 2007
Many thanks to PRO Julie Younger Sitzmann (Navy Alum), Alexis Rubin (Hobart/ William Smith Alum) and Regatta Chair Jenny Gervais (SMC alum) teamed up on behalf of the women of college sailing to run the SMC Women's Intersectional. Many competitors commented on how much they appreciated the former college sailing stars running a women's regatta with an all women's team.
Satruday: 20 knots and more from the frigid Northwest. 8A/6B run in the cold and windy conditions. Boats docked at 4:40pm. Harvard finally stopped their drive south to the event for safety reasons Friday night near Philly and missed the 1st two A races, but rallied to win the last races in each division of the day. Coaches, parents, friends and regatta volunteers gathered fireside for oysters and chili at the Werblow homestead Sat evening.
Sunday: More of the same, but windier at times. All Gold Cup courses throughout the weekend. Lots of positive comments from coaches about the high quality of the racing, particularly at the tail end of the pack in the very challenging conditions. Close exciting racing among the top four teams. Racing completed by 2:45pm. Boats: FJ
Unfortunately, Roger Williams, U Penn and BC were not able to make the trip in the snow/sleet conditions to our North. Over the weekend three requests for redress were heard by chief judge Barbara Herbig.

MCSA Welcomes New Members
Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, Michigan is the latest school to join the MCSA. They participated in the Notre Dame Freshman Regatta and finished in the middle of the fleet. The school has three Flying Scots in addition to a very large training ship. They are looking forward to hosting a sloop regatta in the coming seasons.
The University of Toledo is a previous member of the MCSA which had dropped out for more than ten years. They are sailing out of the North Cape Yacht Club located on Lake Erie in Lasalle, Michigan. The found two of the former Team's boats under the football stadium and are in the process of reconditioning them to use with other FJ's and 420s from the North Cape Y.C.
