April 2009 Tell Tale
Charleston Women's Intersectional
College of Charleston March 7-8, 2009
Saturday: The sailors were greeted with sunny skies and warm temperatures, but very little wind. Racing was postponed ashore until 11:30 when the sea breeze started to fill in from the SSE. The first few races were sailed in 5-8 knots from the SSE with a very weak flood current. The breeze increased to 10-15 and shifted right to SSW, flood current increased. 8A and 6B were completed at the end of the day, all courses were W4 or W5 with downwind gates. One protest was filed and is to be heard on Sunday.
Sunday: Conditions were much the same as yesterday. The light morning westerly died before leaving the leaving the dock, causing racing to be postponed ashore. Around 11 the breeze shifted to the south and began to fill in. B division started the day and sailed their first race (7B) in a very light southerly with strong ebb (southerly) current, making for some long downwind legs. The wind was more solid for 8B and steadily increased to 12-15 by the final races. The current switch to full flood by the end of the day, making for some dynamic racing. 13 races were completed in each Division, all courses were W3, W4 and W5. One protest was filed and disallowed.

Port of LA Harbor Cup
California Maritime Academy March 14-15,2009
SAN PEDRO, Calif. Saturday Sailing was delayed for 2 1/2 hours waiting for wind---any wind---to fill in. Under a light overcast, the course was tentatively set for southwest, anticipating a sea breeze, but shortly before 2 o'clock it arrived from southeast. The fleet of eight Catalina 37s got underway with a 3 foot ocean swell. Defending champion Maine Maritime Academy duked it out with 2008 runner-up USC and a solid California Maritime Academy team, while Chapman University logged a steady string of 3-1-2-4 finishes that separated it by three points from defending champion Maine and 2008 and USC in the eight-boat fleet. Cal State University, Channel Islands, is in fourth place overall, after Cal Maritime lost a protest to Maine over a spinnaker-touching incident at their tight 1-2 finish of the last race.
Sunday: The breeze filled in early and the first of four races got off on time. Maine came out strong winning the first race, USC came back from a fifth to take the bullet in the second race with Maine taking a fifth after being pushed over the line by USC. Cal Maritime posted two 2nds and Chapman struggled with an 8, 7. Although Maine looked solid, it was still anyone's game. Chapman came back to win the third race and the newcomer's CSU Channel Islands won the last race to tie USC for second, Chapman held on for 4th and Cal Maritime with two deep finishes finished fifth. Thanks to Al Garnier and the LAYC race committee and volunteers and the Port of LA for their sponsorship.

Truxtun Umsted
USNA March 21-22, 2009
Saturday started out with a light northeasterly breeze and the fleet of 80 boats was sent out for an on time start. One race was completed per division before the wind got too spotty and everyone went in for lunch. At 1315, a light Southeasterly filled in and finished seven more races per division. The wind varied between 4 and 6 knots for most of the day and the current was running with the wind at less than a knot early before switching for the last set. All racing was done on a trapezoid course and the racing was kept fair by Rob Rowlands and Rob Overton, who were on the water judging all day. Herb Larrabee and Dick Morin joined the two Robs on the Protest Committee at the end of the day, where one protest was filed and one of the competitors withdrew before the hearing. On shore the fleet was treated to a cookout by Joan Morin and volunteers from the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron.
Sunday morning began in a light to moderate Southwesterly breeze and one set was competed off Triton Point before massive shifts forced an early lunch break While we were ashore a great 5-10 knot Southerly filled in and we resumed racing at 1230. LT Ted Huebner and his team of midshipmen kept the fleet sailing until 1600 and 17 races total were completed per division. Two protests and two requests for redress were heard, resulting in one DSQ, one BDG and one boat reinstated from a rule 42 DSQ.
