Saturday, March 5: Racing began in an ESE wind at 5-8 knots with a building ebb tide. Four races were completed using course 4's and 5's; the Cooper River Gold Cup and Triangle Windward Leeward configurations. The tide began ebbing hard and sailors went in for a short lunch break. After lunch the wind shifted to the SSE and 8 more races were sailed using course 4's, 5's, and one course 3; windward leeward's with offsets and gates. A and B division sailed in one fleet of 18 boats. We had no breakdowns and one protest was filed and disallowed.
Sunday, March 6: Sailors were greeted on Sunday morning by air temps in the low 60's and storms on the horizon. Sailing was postponed ashore while a small rain system passed. Sailors took to the water for a 10:00 start for race # 13. Race 13 was W4 and race 14 a W5, both with offsets and gates. The wind as blowing from the south at 12-15 knots, with an increasing ebb tide. Sailors returned to shore after race 14 with storms to the west. After a short postponement ashore, the storms broke up and sailors returned to the racing area. The wind increased to 18-22 knots and the ebb tide created some steep chop in the Cooper River. Race 15 was a course W4. With a significant amount of carnage in race 15, sailors returned to shore on last time. With 15 races sailed, no sign of the wind lying down, and the ebb tide on the increase; racing was called for the day. One redress was heard and granted. We had no protests or breakdowns. Thanks to Bill Healy, Charles Higgins, and Alana O'Reilly for hearing a protest and a redress. Thanks to all of the Charleston undergrads that helped run a great event. Congratulations to the Hoyas for winning the 2011 Charleston Women's.

U.S. Naval Academy
March 5-6, 2011
Boats: FJ/420
Saturday: Today was sailed out of the U.S. Naval Academy today in a Southerly breeze that ranged from 9 to 15 knots with puffs into the lower 20s, cloudy skies, and temps in the mid 50s. Teams were initially split into two groups of 8 based on their Sailing World rankings and sailed one round robin each before splitting into Gold and Silver groupings of 8 teams each. Two "College N" courses were used utilizing the Academy's fleets of both 420s and FJs divided between each course. Races were fully umpired on both circles immensely cutting down on formal protest hearings and maximizing racing.
Sunday: Today was significantly cloudier with temperatures around 50 and winds gusting into the 20s out of the South. The forecasted heavy rains held off until the afternoon and the end of the double Gold and Silver round robins saw some very enjoyable racing. The final four teams were seeded into a knockout round, where Boston College and Roger Williams squared off in Semi-Final 1 while Charleston and Georgetown sailed Semi-Final 2. During the knockout round, the rain started falling and a fog rolled in while the wind lightened. Charleston and Boston College advanced to the finals where the Charleston Cougars prevailed, winning 2-0 to claim the regatta victory. Georgetown beat Roger Williams 2-1 in the Petit-Finals to finish third overall. The ambitious format of this regatta was made possible by the group of volunteers who gave so freely of their time this weekend. A huge thanks goes out to PROs Gavin O'Hare and Kyle Assad and their team of Midshipmen on the Race Committee and the umpire team led by Ch Ump? Rob Overton. Serving with Rob were Sandy Grosvenor, Andrew Cole, Austin Kana, Barbara Herbig, Carol Robinson, Dave Clinnin, Dave Pyron, Dick Morin, Herb Larrabee, Joel Labruzetta, John Pearce, Maureen Mills, Nick Holtan, Ric Crabbe, Sharon Hadsell, and Wayne Bretsch.

Saturday, March 12: Day 1 of the 2011 Navy Spring Women's Intersectional went very smoothly for the 18 teams in attendance. Promptly following the 0930 competitors meeting, the fleet headed out in cloudy and slightly chilly conditions for the morning races. The wind was out of the Southwest and a 4 leg windward leeward course was set in the Severn River, off Triton Point, near the entrance to Spa Creek. A Division began the day in FJs while B was in 420s. The wind was light and shifty in the morning and four races were completed per division in 5-8 knots and flat water before the fleet came in for a short lunch break. After lunch, the wind shifted left a bit and increased in strength while the skies cleared and the temperatures climbed into the upper 50s. While the wind remained shifty throughout the day, but the puffs crept up near 20 during the afternoon races and the waves picked up to near 2 feet on the left side of the course. After nine races, the divisions switched fleets and ran one race while the wind shifted right and decreased in strength back to the 5-10 range to end the day. Boston College is in the lead with 8 races remaining for tomorrow.
Thanks to coaches Brian Clancy and Clinton Hayes for hearing protests, which resulted in three breakdown requests granted and one protest disallowed.
Sunday, March 13: On Sunday, the wind filled in right at the 0900 report time out of the Northwest and quickly built to 10-15 knots. A course was set in the Severn river right in front of the Robert Crown Center and 8 races were completed per division to complete the regatta by 2:00 PM. The wind stayed in the 15 knot range all day, with multiple shifts up every legs coming from both sides. The fleet handled the conditions extremely well and the quality of racing was very high throughout the day.
Thanks to LT Ben Herring and his team of Midshipmen for running great races in a timely fashion. Congratulations to the Boston College Team of Brianna Provancha, Katy Nastro, Emily Maxwell, and Elizabeth Dudley for winning the 2011 Navy Spring Women's Intersectional.

Saturday: Beautiful day of racing on the St. Mary’s River. Southerly breezes from 5-12 knots helped PRO Christopher W. Gaffney run 72 races on an N course. A tremendous group of experienced umpires led by Bryan McDonald kept the playing field level.
Sunday: The balance of the 90 races needed to complete the double round-robin were done by 1:15pm in puffy, shifty Northwesterly and Northerly breezes. There were some wind delays as the day heated up into the sixties. A championship final four was very close with races often being determined right at the finish line. RP information and scoring grid attached. Congratulations to the Boston College Eagles for besting the strong field.

Regatta Highlights: Saturday challenged every sailor with freezing conditions and winds at 15 knots gusting to the upper 20’s. Courses were W4s. Athletes were brushing ice off their shoulders after rotations and all were challenged by freezing lines and blocks throughout the day.
Sunday proved to be another cold day with winds between 10-15 knots with an occasional gust to 20. Courses were W4s, until the last A-division race where the race committee chose a W6. Awards were given to the top 3 schools, as well as the top three finishers in each division.
