Fall Intersectional @ U.S. Naval Academy
19-20 October 2002
Twenty schools competed in this year's event sailing in two Divisions of 420's and two Divisions of Lasers. Saturday - 11 races in an 8-12 kt southerly. Sunday - 3 races in 2-6 kt Northerly. Members of the jury, Diane Burton and Ali Meller issued five yellow flags. The results for races 3&4 blew off the finish line boat and sank. The races were then re-sailed, however, the protest committee granted redress to a number of crews allowing them to count their position in the original races rather than the re-sailed races.

Day one began with 18 knots of southerly which during the first race quickly increased to near 30 with waves larger than five feet. The race was abandoned and the fleet was sent in for the day. Thanks to everyone who helped with the rescue process. Day two brought a light to moderate westerly and both fleets sailed a mix of course 4 and course 5 for a total of five races in each division. Thanks to Peter Wilson for judging.
NOTE: No team representative from Queen's University signed the RP form. Therefore, as per Procedural Rule 10d(i) 20 points per division have been added to the scores. AC

The Milwaukee Yacht Club was the site of this event. Offshore westerly to northwesterly breezes of 10-16 mph on Saturday and 5-10 mph on Sunday challenged the women and there were shifty conditions both days. Saturday started cloudy, but by mid-morning there were blue skies and crisp temperatures of 45-50 degrees. Sunday, saw blue skies becoming cloudy. The Race Committee set 14 races on Saturday and 8 on Sunday. Windward-Leeward and Triangle-Windward-Leeward courses were used.
The women complimented the Race Committee for setting good courses. A tender shuttled the teams between shore and the sailing area to speed up the rotation. Ashore there was hot chocolate, hot apple cider and a fireplace to keep the sailors warm between races. Thermal trophy mugs went to overall winners. There were no protests.
Special thanks to all whom helped, particularly Race Committee John Strassmann-PRO (Northwestern/Wisconsin '76), Margaret Robinson (MCSA Commodore-1970, Cincinnati '71), Rob Hamill, Bob and Cindy Kraus, and the Milwaukee Yacht Club for their Junior Clubhouse.

MICHIGAN WINS STORM TRISAIL CLUB REGATTA
October 13, 2002
The Storm Trysail Club's Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta was sailed Columbus Day weekend in extreme western Long Island Sound's Eastchester Bay. Stuyvesant Yacht Club hosted the regatta and provided facilities for the visiting boats and teams. For the second year in a row, windy, stormy conditions greeted sailors on the opening day of the event. The large waves, brought on by a howling easterly, forced the cancellation of racing on the first day.
On Sunday, the race committee did a great job of running four races in two hours. Conditions were trying with a shifty 5-8 knot breeze. In the two-boat J/120 class, Duke prevailed over Cornell as a result of winning the last race. In the seven boat Express 37 and J/35 division the team from University of Michigan was the clear winner. Sailing for Michigan were: Mike Rohde '05, Craig Capilla, '03, Chris Cochran '03, Ben Van Dam '05, Tom Martin '05, Chris Deline '02, Eli Rosenberg '04, Chris Medcalf '04

MINNESOTA FINISHES THIRD
ICSA Sloop Championship
November 1-3, 2002
The Gophers came from behind to finish in third place in the ICSA Sloop Championship hosted by Brown University and the New York Yacht Club, Harbor Court in Newport RI.
The regatta was sailed in Narragansett Bay off of Newport, RI with winds ranging from 8-30 mph. The top ten college teams from North America qualified from seven district eliminations. Universities used three sailors to compete in Sonars; a 23-foot keelboat sailed with a spinnaker.
The Gophers, Tim Krech, Brian Kerr, and Ben Burgum, started out slow finishing 8th in the first race. In the second race after a broach, they finished with a 7th. In the last race of day one, they hit a few bad waves and were pinched out at a five-boat photo finish to take 6th. After Day 1 Minnesota was tied for 6th overall.
Day two was cold with temperatures in the: low 30's, steep waves and winds ranging from 20-30 mph. Minnesota won the start of Race 4 and finished first. The 5th race saw Minnesota round the windward mark in fourth but did a spectacular death roll and ended up with their spinnaker hour glassed and was forced to sail take time to fix it. Later in same race, they hit a huge wave and blew the spinnaker to bits contributing to a 7th place finish. The race committee decided to fly the no spinnaker flag for last two races of the day. At the end of day two Minnesota held sole position of sixth on the scoreboard.
In the first race of day three (race 8) Minnesota ended up winning by over 30-boat lengths and over a minute lead. This put them in a tie with the US Navel Academy for 5th overall. In race two of day three, Minnesota sailed to an impressive third place finish moving them into fourth overall. Coming into the final race six teams were all battling very closely for 3rd-8th. The last race of the 10 race series, Minnesota overtook Texas on the first downwind leg and never looked back giving them another first place and Third Place for the regatta

MCSA Team Race Clinic
University of Michigan
November 9-10, 2002
The clinic opened with some assessment sailing, circle drills and follow the leader drills. Chief coach Peter Horsch (California '96) and Ben Jarashow (Michigan '00) went over what the drills do to help with boat handling when, team racing. A chalk talk about standard plays, mark traps, pins, escapes and other team race skills was given by Dave Johnson, Jr., (St. Mary's / Western Michigan '02). A walking drill of race situation application was run by Nathan Marshall (Michigan '02). Participants were then assigned to mixed teams for the afternoon. Team races were run with coaches occasionally giving instructions to the participants. The practice races were videotaped and the tapes were reviewed at Saturday night's social.
Sunday featured a double-elimination team race event, with the sailors back with their school team (with a few borrowed personnel). The racing was very competitive, with no 1-2-3 finishes, and many races coming down to the finish line. The use of On-The-Water Observers was tested. At the conclusion of the 17 races, Northwestern eked out the title over the Michigan team.
Race Committee was Ben Jarashow, Dave Johnson, Jr., and Gail Turluck. Judge was George Griswold. There were no protests filed.
The courses were Triangle-Windward. The boats sailed were JY-15's and 420's. Saturday was sunny in the morning, becoming cloudy temperatures in the low 60's, and winds SE 10-18 in the morning calming to 8-12 in the afternoon. Sunday was cloudy, with temperatures in the upper 50's and winds SE 3-12. An hour after racing a huge thunderstorm ripped through the region.
Hope and Kalamazoo failed to sign the Record of Participation and were assessed the ICSA required penalty. No-shows were Western Michigan and Wisconsin.

PCIYRA North-South Intersectional
November 16-17,2002
Beautiful clear skies and temperatures in the high 70's at Lake Cachuma in the Santa Barbara hills was the setting. The Race Committee struggled to get races off all day with the breeze shifting around the clock and dying often. 2 Races were held in each division mostly in breeze from 2-6 knots. Campfires, RV Parties, and all sorts of outdoor social engagement were enjoyed by the students, coaches and alumni of West Coast (and Midwestern) college sailing.
On Sunday the breeze cooperated allowing a full day's racing in 5-10 knots. 6 Races in each division were held.

Timme Tune-Up Regatta @ Northwestern University
November 23, 2002
The day started off bright and early with teams trickling in for report time at 8:30 for this one-day regatta. All expected teams showed up, as the wind climbed from a gusty 15 to a kicking 27 knots, rarely dropping below 20. Waves were nearly nonexistent. Unfortunately, the wind never quite dropped down to a sailable reading. So, there was no racing and the 2002 Timme Tune-Up Regatta ended up with no sailing results.
We were pleased to welcome two guest schools - University of Chicago and University of Illinois. Hopefully they'll be able to get on the water first thing next spring. The Regatta Chair was Brian Sabina assisted by Marie Kyle, Race Committee Chair was Peter Horsch, Protest Committee Chair was George Griswold.
Attending were: Chicago, Illinois, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Northwestern 2
Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta
November 29-December 1, 2002
Chicago Yacht Club hosted the 56th running of the "unofficial fall championship of college sailing" in Belmont Harbor in 420's. On Friday, 8A and 6B races were sailed in South winds 4-8 mph with occasional puffs in Belmont Harbor with a high temperature of 50. On Saturday, behind an overnight cold front, winds were NNW 15-22 with gusts up to 30 and temperatures in the low 30's and falling to the mid-20's. On Saturday 5A and 7B races were sailed. Numerous capsizes and damaged equipment caused some delays. "Old Timers" were reminiscing and enjoying the return of "traditional" Timmes sailing conditions. Frozen sheets, ice coated life jackets and dry suits were the order of the day. There were cloudy skies with occasional snow flurries, except for sunny period in the early afternoon. Sunday was cloudy with temperatures in the mid-20's and winds Southwest 7. There were 2A and 2B races sailed on Sunday to complete the rotation. Courses sailed were W-L-W-L, W-L-W-L-W, Double Triangle-W/L, and Double Triangle-W-L-W-L. There were four protests and one breakdown application.
The Regatta Chair was Suzy Phelps. The Scoring Chair was Janet Baxter. The Dock Chair was Bill Fox, Jr. The PROs were Karen Mc Lane and Andy Keiner. Race Committee members included Mike Esposito, Ann Moorman, Dick Schweers, John Thomas, Andy Kiener, Jr., John Kiener, and Mary Murphy. The Chief Judge was Ted Jones, and the Jury included Allan Teske, Dennis Bartley, Don Glasell, George Griswold, John Antanaitis, Gene Mc Carthy, Cindy Muller, Alice Martin, Robert Sargent, Nancy Glover, Jay Muller and Clare Wegert. American Airlines provided transportation for PCIYRA's Cal-Berkeley and NWICSA's Western Washington teams. Housing with Chicago Yacht Club member families was provided to competitors. Traditional hot lunches, hot soup, Saturday night banquet and dance, and Sunday Awards Luncheon helped all.
Queens was a no-show. Kansas was assessed the ICSA 20-point per division penalty for falling to sign their Record of Participation Form. Kansas left the regatta after Saturday.
The Timme Angsten Memorial Bowl was awarded to Boston College, the champion of the regatta. The MCSA Graduate Officer's Trophy was awarded to Wisconsin, the highest placing MCSA team, winner of the MCSA Fall Dinghy Championship.

Illinois Institute of Technology & University of Chicago Sailing Clubs Rejoin the MCSA
The Illinois Institute of Technology Sailing Club is headed by Commodore Melissa Schroeder (312) 808-6940, schrmel@iit.edu, and Vice Commodore Dylan Easley (312) 808-6230, easldyl@iit.edu, Illinois Tech is located on the near south side of Chicago, a school with approximately 1600 undergraduates which runs on the semester system. Their club currently has 12 members. They are working on plans to sail at Jackson Park Yacht Club on Lake Michigan and will have the use of 6 FJ's. The "Scarlet Hawks"' advisor is Dr. Bob Schleser. They will be funded by both member dues and a semester by semester allotment from the school's student activities fund.
The University of Chicago Sailing Club's Commodore is Matthew Wurtzebach. Chicago is located a few miles south of Illinois Tech on the south side of Chicago, and operates on the quarter system. The school has 12,000 students, of which 4,000 are undergraduates. Their club's membership is 35. A combination of member dues and an allotment from the school will fund their operations. The "Maroons" own 2 FJ's and will sail from Jackson Park Yacht Club on Lake Michigan. Jackson Park's 6 FJ's will be available for use for regattas.
Both Clubs plan to work together, to implement an instruction program to provide additional operating funds, to continue to recruit members on their campus, and to improve their fleet.
