2004 Midwinter Meeting
The Executive Board accepted Northwestern's bid to host the 2004 Midwither Meeting in Chicago on February 7 & 8, 2004 at the Courtyard by Marriot Downtown located at the corner of Hubbard and State Streets. Schools will be receiving more detailed information from Northwestern in the near future.
MCSA Makes Progress
Tom Martin
This past year the MCSA has seen many changes that are all positive. We elected a new Graduate Secretary who has gotten himself up to speed very quickly and has done a great job for this district so far and I know it is going to get even better. The district hosted the 2003 ICSA North American Championships with the help of the Michigan Sailing Team, which were an overwhelming success. This fall we implemented the ICSA Online Directory, which has streamlined the registration process. We have made numerous changes in how team leaders respond to NOR's and how regatta hosts obtain their materials, which has made the district run more smoothly.
On the water we have seen many new regattas being formed and improved attendance to other big events. More teams in our district are going out of the district to sail against the top collegiate teams in the country. Competition has been fierce on the water, but the social atmosphere has remained as strong as ever. We have all had lots of fun together for countless weekends and with the impending doom of winter in the Midwest, we still have the memories we shared together this past season. The MCSA list has been active and has spurred some productive debates.
This past year as your Commodore, I have learned so much about the intricacies of this district and the ICSA in general. I have enjoyed meeting all the new people that have asked me questions or provided comments and guidance to the rest of the Board. One thing which I think was improved but could be further improved is communication between the Board and the Membership. The Board will now post its meeting minutes on the website for all to see. The Board wants feedback from all of you on what issues you want addressed and what changes you think need to be made.
It has been my pleasure to serve as MCSA Commodore this past year. I would like to thank my fellow Board Members for all they have done for this district and for the support and guidance of our graduate members of the Board. I would also like to wish those nominated good luck in the elections at Midwinters, I know the upcoming Board will be as good if not better than the Boards I have served on. Let's keep the district driving forward with sails full!
Fair Winds and Happy Sailing!

This regatta was held in FJ's, each team having two boats, an A and a B team, sailing in the same division. Team and individual scores can be seen below. Saturday's racing was completed in winds ranging from 0-5 knots from the North which later in the afternoon shifted to the Northwest. Sunday's racing was competed in 2-6 knots with winds from South. There were no protests filed, but one request for breakdown was granted in race 14 for a broken spreader. Special thanks go out to all the teams who made the trek out to Columbus this weekend and also to all the Ohio State sailors who helped in the kitchen and on RC: Bryan Parker, Nate Owens. Adam Schmidt, Joe Minerd, Bridget Ireland and Katie Ensinger.

New Opportunities
Mary Vorel
End of the season already? With every end, there's a new beginning. A time for ice boating or land sailing (Blo-kart looks fun!). At the least, it's an opportunity before election time to generate new membership or funds for the next season. It could just be a chance to do something non-sailing related with your team to bring them closer together as a whole without sailing egos in the way.
A quick look back though at the accomplishments of some of our newer teams: Denison, Lake Forest, U of Chicago, and Iowa State all made strong attempts to sail in more regattas this season! St. Thomas finished 5th overall at Fall Fury and Lindsey Allen raced hard to qualify for the ICSA Singlehanded Champs. The U of Illinois-UC not only came to their first events this season, but brought more than one team most of the time! IUPUI hosted their first Last Call Regatta and made it a major success with 9 teams! They also would like to upgrade their membership in the MCSA. Michigan Technological University and Illinois Weslyan University are both going to try and match those stats by applying to membership at Midwinters.
Happy Holidays and good luck on finals!

Friday: The first day of racing was completed in shifty Northwest 5- 7 kts. Courses were gold cups and windward-leewards twice around. The morning conditions were cold and gusts to 20 kts. No protests.
Saturday: Races 4-8 were held in a big breeze with the first 2 races being held in the East River to avoid the waves. After lunch racing was on Long Island Sound with conditions at a steady 22 and puffs to 26. The brand-new borrowed Flying Scots worked out perfectly, even in the extreme conditions. Over the course of the regatta only a few chutes were taped up.
Sunday: Kings Point had things pretty tightly wrapped up after taking a commanding lead in the rough conditions, but the race for 2nd place could have been won by three teams. In the second to last race Hobart fought back to finish 5th after a very shifty first leg that put them on the wrong side of the course and close to last, half way through the race. In the same race Harvard took a yellow flag but then ended up retiring after finishing. Dartmouth did all they could in the lighter conditions with their best day.
Thanks to judges Mary Savage, Chris Petraco, Pat Healy, and Paul-John Patin who heard two protests.

This past quarter has been very productive. The district has gone through many changes on the way scheduling is done. I have really enjoyed being able to communicate with all of the teams when they were attending regattas and when they were not. The team entry confirmation has gone much more smoothly and I hope it continues for the future race chairman. I am proud to announce that as far as I know we have not had to charge the $100 cancellation fine so congratulations to all of the teams out there that attended regattas as scheduled. The district has done a great job in organizing for regattas which is a great sign for team organization and communication. Expect to see information on a change in scheduling for the 2004 season appearing in your mailboxes in the coming weeks. Till then keep up the good work and enjoy the holidays.
I hope to continue to hear great things from the district in the future as I am finally a graduate. Who would have ever thought that four years and some change in college sailing would have gone by so fast! Thank you to everyone that has made my time in the MCSA so enjoyable. I can't imagine any sailing group to be quite as much fun as all of you. Why else would we leave campus for on average of six weekends a semester, sometimes more sometimes less. My friends used to ask me why I was never around OU and I would reply, "1 get to see all of my OU friends five days a week but I only get to see my MCSA friends a few monthes out of the year." All I can say is that it has been quite a ride and I can not thank the Ohio University Sailing team, the MCSA, or the ICSA enough for making my years in college sailing so wonderful. Remember college goes by fast, so sail fast, enjoy friends and keep the MCSA traditions alive! See you at Midwinters...

The event was sailed out of the Macatawa Yacht Club on Macatawa Bay just outside of Holland Michigan. 420's were used.. The temperature was in the low 50's and the sun was shining. The winds varied from a low of 3 to a high of 12 during the day. Due to the shifting of the wind , the windward leeward and triangle courses had to be moved many times. The Hope College and Macatawa Bay YC members did a good job of running the regatta completing the rotation just at sunset. In keeping with local tradition Wooden shoes were given as prizes to the winning teams and Divisional winners.

Saturday's sunny yet frigid racing was completed in incredibly shifty and light breeze peaking around 5 mph from the Northeast and eventually dieing. The high for the day peaked at 35 degrees and competitors and boats were all coated with ice. The A and B division both only completed one set after which racing was postponed until the breeze filled in consistently from one direction. The A division went back out to try and sail and after waiting for the wind to fill in, attempted one start which was a general recall and by the time sailors turned back, the wind had shut off and whatever small puffs did fill in were oscillating at least 90 degrees. Racing was cancelled for the day. The race committee ran Windward-leewards and no protested were filed.
Sunday was met with much more pleasing conditions: temperatures around 40 degrees with shifty and gusty winds ranging 10-15 mph out of the South. Both A and B division sailed 5 races. The courses were windward-leewards, both once and twice around. Three Requests for were filed. Many thanks to judge Andy Kiener, PRO Kris Dressler, RC assistant Amy Schultz, Scorer Jake Fishman, and the rest of Wisconsin's sailing team for helping to run a smooth successful regatta!

ICSA Vanguard North American Singlehanded Championships
Eckerd College
November 21-23,2003
Friday Practice was from 9-11 am, Comp meeting 11:15, followed by 12:00 first warning. Racing was postponed as a dying easterly made it tough to set good courses. At approx. 1:30, the fleet was sent back to the dock to wait for a sea-breeze. At approx. 2:30, race 1 began in a solid 7-9 knot westerly shifting NW by race 4 with velocity dropping to 4-5 knots. Race 5 was completed just as the sun dipped below the horizon. Courses sailed were #5 (windward/leeward 5 legs). No protests, no breakdowns. 32 new Lasers were provided by Vanguard (Men/Full Rigs 1 st start, Women/Radials 2nd start). 4 yellow flags were issued by the jury for rule 42 violations in the Men's division, no yellow flags for the women.
Saturday racing began at 9:40am with NE breeze at 8-10 knots. 3 races were sailed before the breeze faded to a shifty E/SE at 2-4 knots. R/C opted for a lunch break on the water to wait for the breeze to stabilize. After 30 minutes of drifting the competitors were towed back to the docks to wait for the westerly to fill. At approximately 2:45 the breeze filled in again out of the NE at 4-6 knots and the competitors headed back out. When the competitors reached the course, the breeze had diminished to a patchy 1-3 knots out of the east. Racing was called for the day at approx. 4:45. 2 protests were heard during the break in the full rig fleet resulting in DSQ's. 1 request for redress in the Radial fleet was heard and denied. No breakdowns. Courses sailed were #5's. 2 yellow flags issued to the full rig fleet and 1 yellow flag for the radials.
First warning went off promptly at 9:00 in an Easterly at 6-8 knots. Pressure fluctuated between 5-10 knots for races 9-13 before tapering off to 4-5 knots for race 14. After a light race 15, the men's division started race 16 in a dying E-SE while the women were forced to sail in after 2 general recalls forcing them to miss the 3:00 start time limit. Race 16 for the men was later abandoned. Courses sailed were #5's. No protests / no breakdowns. Jury issued 5 yellow flags for the men's division and none for the women. 2003 Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta
Chicago Yacht Club
November 28-30, 2003
Day 1 -Competitors were welcomed to the Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont Station with a full continental breakfast. From the YC windows, overlooking the race course, the conditions were cold (34 degrees), windy (5 -15 kts) and cloudy. Atypical for the harbor though, the shifts were contained to a 30 degree arc. Racing got underway with the first A division rotation at about 9:15 CST. Boston College quickly established themselves at the top of the leader board by rolling off 6 straight bullets. They held on to the lead all day ripping off a total of 11 first place finishes. Around midday, with the rotation going very quickly, a competitor meeting was held and a unanimous vote was to add an additional half rotation to the regatta making a new total of 18 A and B races for the regatta.
Day 2 -Conditions in Chicago didn't change much on Saturday. It was still cold but the wind was a bit more 'typical' for Belmont Harbor with large changes in pressure and direction. What didn't change were the results. While the gap between 1st and 2nd place was narrowed, Boston College still had what amounted to an insurmountable lead going into the final day of racing. The other big story of the regatta is the battle for 2nd and 3rd place. Minnesota and Wisconsin have been close all regatta. These two teams were separated by only 1 point going into Sunday's racing. Coincidentally, they were also vying for the Fall MCSA championship. Racing on Sunday was expected to be exciting for both sailors and spectators. Partly due to the close battle for 2nd but also due to the forecast winds of 30 knots. If that wasn't enough, the direction, West, was expected to make for some interesting shifts and puffs as the wind swirls around the harbor.
Day 3 -Unfortunately, the winds did not kick up to the predicted 30 knots. Instead it blew a pleasant 5-7 out of the SSW. The sun came out and the temperature rose and made for some enjoyable sailing, eve though it was a bit shifty. That is to be expected at Belmont. Boston College pulled off their second victory in a row. Wisconsin managed to maintain second place. By doing this, they also won the MCSA Fall Championship. Minnesota was close behind them by only two points.
