35 sailors from around the country arrived in Seattle to sunny clear skies and crisp fall temps. Highs reached the low 50's by the afternoon, but the wind was never strong enough to get a race started. Sailors were postponed on shore until 3:30 when a 3-5 kt. Southerly finally filled. Once everyone made it to the course, the wind had died off and the RC never got the chance to start a race.
After a day of no wind on Friday, sailors started the day at 10:00 with an 8-10 kt southerly. As the clouds cleared, the wind built to around 12-15 kts with some bigger puffs for most of the day before fading back down to around 8 kts for the final races in both fleets. Temps reached the upper 50's and I think everyone was pretty tired after a long day on the water. All courses were W-4's with a leeward gate and downwind finish. Big thanks to PRO Jay Renehan and the race committee who did a great job getting races off. And thanks to our judges: Charles Macauley, Wayne Balsiger, Tom Barrett, Mike Karas, and Zak Malbin who spent the day on the water keeping everyone honest. There was one protest which resulted in a DSQ and one redress granted. Boats: Laser/Radial
Sunday brought consistent North winds in the 8-12 knot range. The remaining races were sailed under partly cloudy skies and crisp low 50 degree weather. No protests were filed. And both fleets were off the water by 2:00. Thanks to our judges today: Charles Macauley, Wayne Balsiger, Tom Barrett, Lindsay Bergan, Dalton Bergan and Jen Glass. Also, thanks to Jay Renehan our PRO and his race committee team. Also a huge thanks to all our sponsors: Vanguard Sailboats, Pentax, GTS Photos, Gill, Clif Bar, North Sails of Seattle, Kvichak Marine, Fisheries Supplies, Sail Sand Point, and all the volunteers who made the event possible.
Congratulations to Krysta Rohde of the Coast Guard Academy for winning the Janet Lutz Trophy, to Thomas Barrows of Yale University for winning the Glen S. Foster Trophy and Reed Johnson for winning the George H. Griswold Trophy.

Blow Harder
Northwestern
November 10-11, 2007
Timmies Tune Up, hosted by Northwestern University, welcomed a chilly fall weekend with moderate sailing. On Saturday, 18 boats set out onto Lake Michigan around 9:40 a.m., sailing in 3-5 knots of wind that built slowly coming out of the N-NE. As the day went on the wind clocked 180 degrees and built to 10 knots by 5pm. After completing 6 windward leeward races per division sailors returned to the beach just as the sun was setting.
On Sunday, clouds filled the sky and the wind had picked up to 14-18 knots out of the South with 3-4 foot waves rolling in. Both divisions sailed one set with some teams opting not to sail because of the challenging conditions. Thanks to the Northwestern sailors who gave up sailing on Sunday to facilitate the rotating of boats off the sandbar in the big waves.
Throughout the regatta, there were two breakdowns filed, only one of which was allowed, and no protests.

ICSA Sloop National Championship
Ft. Worth, TX
November 16-18, 2007
One of the best ways to determine a true champion, is to test them in a variety of conditions, this past weekend was one of those championships. Friday was relatively cold (50), with winds in the high teens to low twenty's, with several guts in the 25-30 range. Saturday was light, ten or less, with only three quality races completed. And Sunday morning was even lighter, a zero to five drifter, before filling back in to a very nice ten to twelve. Winds were from the south between 150 and 190 for the whole weekend (the normal direction for Ft. Worth). It was also relatively puffy (also normal), rather then well defined wind lines or regular oscillations moving across the course.
It was a relatively clean regatta, with only 2 protests; a port/starboard between Navy and Hawaii and an incident during the start of race 8 between St. Mary's and BC (this decided the regatta). One redress was granted to St. Mary's when their headstay broke on day 1 (The Boat Club thanks them for their seamanship and ability to save the mast with no permanent damage) and 1 redress was denied to Navy, wanting race 8 thrown out on account of light air. Boats: J-22 (crew of 3)
Thanks to the FWBC for continuing their long tradition of quality racing and hospitality, it's Commodore Karen Smith, PRO Herman van Beek, Board Member Finlay Higgins, the jury of Bryan Dyer, Mark Smith, and Mike Lattimore, ICSA Rep Charles Higgins, Glennon Stratton of GST Photos and the club staff.

Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta
Chicago Yacht Club
November 23-25, 2007
The University of Vermont Sailing team won the 61st annual Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta, held at Chicago Yacht Club's Monroe Harbor Station. Vermont led the regatta in first place all weekend, with the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin, never more than a few points behind.
Sunday saw winds at 10 knots out of the Southwest. Wisconsin managed to come within one point as Vermont had a slow start early in the day. Going into the last two races Wisconsin needed to win to move into first place, but was only able to get a 2 and 3 while Vermont took two bullets and the Angsten Bowl. The University of Rhode Island finished third.
There were no protests in the regatta. Three breakdowns were awarded by the Jury headed by Ted Jones. Karen McLane was the PRO helped by many. Bill Fox managed the support boats. Janet Baxter did the scoring. Craig Capella repaired the boats that broke down. Suzy Phelps was Regatta Chair with assistance from Tom McGrath.

Midwinters 2008
By Tom McGrath
The last week has been very busy planning Midwinters 2008, here in Chicago February 8-9, 2008 at the Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont Station. Everyone attending will have much to look forward to this year. Plan to drive in for a social event Friday night at a venue where registrations will take place. Upon arrival at the club Saturday morning, you will be greeted by a hot breakfast before sessions get started. Closing out the day will be a formal banquet and dancing at the club with the possibility of an event thereafter. I am still working out some additional details but all team leaders should expect to receive more details by email in the next few weeks. If you have any questions, drop me a line, tom@tommcgrath.net.
By George Griswold
There will be an Open Forum to discuss ideas on how to improve College Sailing. Teams are encouraged to bring and share ideas that other teams can use and ideas that will improve the MCSA. There will be a report of the ICSA Meeting held in January.
The main event will be the scheduling of events for 2008. The MCSA Executive Board has accepted bids for the MCSA Championships. The ICSA Semi-Finals will be at Hobart/Wm Smith and the US Sailing Center - Long Beach. Due to the ICSA's decision to hold Semi-Finals, the traditional MCSA Spring Schedule has been adjusted. Teams should take note that some traditional events have new dates. Teams are encouraged to schedule carefully. Further, Teams wishing to host events in addition to those on the schedule are encouraged to do so. New events should be considered for weekends when only a small number of teams are involved in Championships.
The Annual meeting will be held during which the MCSA Officers for 2008 will be elected. If you are interested in running it is not too soon to down load the Nominating Petition from the MCSA website and start collecting signatures. At the Annual Meeting teams will be admitted to and advanced in membership status. Again it is important that you down load the appropriate forms from the MCSA website.
Finally there will be the Annual Banquet where there will be the presentation of the MCSA Trophies, Awards for Sportsmanship, Student leadership, The Best Regatta, and the All Conference Team.
