Area East Championships
Hope College
November 7, 2009
There were nearly perfect conditions this year for the Area East Championships with wind blowing day between 10 and 15 mph, plenty of sun, and temperatures in the upper 50’s. The day was started with windward-leeward courses, and was changed midday to course #11 from Appendix A in the Black Book (windward-leeward with separate start and finish lines). Everything ran very smoothly despite a few tips, but no serious issues arose. No protests were filed.

Saturday dawned sunny and extraordinarily warm, with temperatures in the 50's and winds from the WNW around 10mph. A's started their first race a little after 9:30 and racing continued throughout the day. The wind lightened up to 4-5mph and the temperatures getting into the mid 60's. At 3:15 racing was called for the day with 12 races completed. Sloppy sloppy Joes were served for lunch with plenty of leftovers for day 2.
Sunday was warm again, with the breeze filling in from the south and building to 10-14mph. Two sets were sailed in both A's and B's, and racing ended at 1:00pm. Modified w2's were sailed all weekend and no protests were filed. Glassware was awarded to low point A's and B's and the top three finishing teams.
Thanks to our PRO Paul Bargren and judges Dean Cady and Dennis Bartley.
Congratulations to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northwestern and St. Thomas for qualifying for the Timme Angsten Thanksgiving weekend!

November 14-15, 2009
Saturday: Sailors were greeted to clear skies and sunny weather at Evanston, IL, where twelve Midwest teams competed. Racing started at 10:30 with moderately light conditions. A's completed 6 races, while B's completed 4 races with two and half rotations completed with Michigan 2, Wisconsin and Northwestern 1 in the lead. A breakfast of bagels and scrambled eggs, and a lunch of tacos were served. We look forward to another great day of racing tomorrow.
Sunday's weather was considerably colder and less sunnier with heavier wind around 10-15 knots blowing north/northwestern throughout the day. Racing began at 9:45 with the B's finishing the third complete rotation. A's completed two races, and B's completed three races. Racing finished at 1:00.
Thank you to Erik Schneider, Betsy Altman, and the other judges. Boat: 420

ICSA / LaserPerformance
Men’s and Women’s
National Singlehanded Championship 2010
Corpus Christi Yacht Club | November 06-08, 2009
Juan Maegli of College of Charleston wins the 2009-2010 ICSA / Laser Performance Men's Singlehanded National Championship, and Anne Hager repeats as winner of the 2009-2010 ICSA / LaserPerformance Women's Singlehanded National Championship. Although Corpus Christi did not quite live up to the reputation that gives it the distinction of being the windiest coastal city in North America, it did provide great racing for the ICSA / LaserPerformance Men's and Women's Singlehanded National Championships. Juan Maegli, a sophomore from College of Charleston, bested the fleet of 18 qualifiers with 10 top-three finishes and no finishes worse than 9th in the 18 races sailed in the Olympic class Laser winning the men's championship. Second place finisher was Fred Strammer, Brown University, and third place was won by Thomas Barrows of Yale. ??In the women's Laser Radial fleet Anne Hager, a sophomore from Boston College, won her second straight ICSA / LaserPerformance Women's Singlehanded National Championship with 10 top-three finishes in the 18 races. Hager edged out a Claire Dennis, Yale, by 6 points, while Allie Blecher, College of Charleston finished third. The event was generously hosted by Corpus Christi Yacht Club, sponsored by Laser Performance?, with supporting sponsorship form Marlow Ropes, GTS Photos, and US Sailing. Online video coverage provided by Sailgroove.

Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta
Chicago Yacht Club
11/27/09-11/29/09
The University of Wisconsin was named the victor of the 63rd Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta, hosted by Chicago Yacht Club in 420's at Monroe Harbor in Chicago. Ten teams traveled from around the Midwest to spend Thanksgiving weekend sailing in light winds. This was the first time in that the event included no out of district teams. Kansas was a No Show.
When the regatta was started in 1947, it was one of the only opportunities for college sailors to race outside their district and the best sailors always came. They raced in cold or freezing weather in boats which were not self rescuing. The racing rules did not allow alternative penalties, if you hit a mark or misjudged a port crossing and you went back to the dock, with a hefty penalty.
The ”Timmes” has always been a highlight of the fall season for the Midwest District and serves as their Fall Championship. The schedule has been changed to start on Friday at noon, allowing competitors to have Thanksgiving at home, and then travel to Chicago.
Conditions: Friday light winds and only 4 races were completed, under sunny skies, starting in the early afternoon with temperatures in the 40?s. Wisconsin quickly was recognized as the team to beat. Saturday started sunny with 50 degree temperatures, and SW and SE-S winds 4-8. Sunday started with a thunderstorm, and the Race Committee waited for it to pass, then six races were completed in a northerly wind under cloudy skies with temperatures in the 50?s. Wisconsin was also awarded the MCSA Fall Dinghy Championship trophy as the highest placing Midwest school.

Midwinter Meeting
The 2010 Midwinter Meeting will be held in Chicago this coming January 30th in conjunction with the Strictly Sail Exposition. Teams should expect to receive more detailed information before the end of this year.
Also check with the MCSA website
www.mcsasail.org
2010 MCSA Officers
The MCSA needs a few individuals who want to practice their leadership skills during 2010. The process of becoming a member of the MCSA Executive Board is simple.
1. You must be a member of a school having Regular Membership in the MCSA.
2. You need to read through the MCSA By-Laws to determine which office
in which you have an interest.
3. You will need to review your plans for the next year to make sure that
you will be able to take the time needed to fulfill the duties of that office, including the travel time to the usual five Executive Board meetings held each year.
4. If you feel comfortable with your decision to run for one of the offices you
should go to the MCSA website under “Forms” and download a Nomination Form. You must get a minimum of 1/3 of the Regular Member Schools to sign your Nomination form before the Annual Meeting on January 30th. Note that the signatures of schools that sign more than one petition for a given office will be declared invalid, and may result in an entire petition being invalid.
5. At the Annual Meeting be prepared to give a small speech describing why you
want the office you are running for.
