Fall Team Race
Wisconsin
November 5-6, 2011
420
Saturday: Racing began at around 10 with breeze from the South making for slow rotations out of Wisconsin Hoofers. The 12 teams were randomly split into 2 groups of six. Each pool did a round robins consisting of 15 races each. After the 30 races the top 3 teams from each division were put into a top 6 round robin with the bottom 6 doing a round robin as well. These round robins began around 2:30 and went until 5:15 at which point the regatta chair cancelled the remaining 3 bottom six races in order to finish off the top six before dusk. Fifty-seven races were sailed on Saturday
Sunday: Despite the ominous forecast breeze was out of the Southeast blowing around 15 with puffs nearing the twenties and building all day. With a 3 way tie for third a top 5 round robin was started in the morning. Unfortunately, Michigan had to retire part way through due to an injured sailor. Upon completion of the final five a final four was completed in the puffy breeze. Sixty three races were sailed in all. Big thanks to Hans Graf, Betsy Altman, John Porter, and Dierk Polzin for umpiring all weekend.

Timme Tune-Up
Northwestern
November 12-13, 2011
420
Saturday, November 12: Almost one hundred sailors came to South Beach bright and early on Saturday morning; a great start for Timme's Tune Up 2011! We were able to start the first race a little before 10:00, and were hoping to get in as many races as possible before sunset. The wind steadily built from the low teens to settle in the low 20s with waves steadily building as well. Luckily it was warmer and sunny, and we were able to get in 16 total races before it got too dark to sail. Many thanks to our race committee, headed by Rick Lillie, for keeping our course square as the wind swung during the day, and to our judges for standing by during the afternoon. Fortunately they had no protests to hear as the sailors kept things clean on the water.
Sunday, November 13: Racing was canceled on Sunday due to a forecast of steady mid-20 knots with gusts over 40, as well as large waves. Congratulations to Minnesota for their two-point victory in the 2011 Timme Tune-Up regatta. Minnesota leads after the offset mark

Hosted By Chicago Yacht Club
November 19-20, 2011
420s
The regatta was held this year on Saturday November 19th and Sunday November 20th at Chicago Yacht Club Monroe St Station. Saturday was a beautiful day in the mid 50s with wind 20 knots from the south. The racers were able to get in four races before the wind grew to 26 knots sustained and the race committee hoisted the AP flag. With in half an hour the wind peaked to 30 knots sustained on the race course, but after two hours under postponement the wind fell to back to 20knots and racing resume. Where the regatta was able to get in four more full races. Racing for the day completed at 4:10pm CST Saturday.
Sunday the wind was 12 knots from the North Northwest, which grew slightly throughout the day. Wisconsin entered the day well ahead of the pack and grew their lead over the rest of the day. Racing for second and third was close and it wasn't until the last race that third place was decided. In the end the regatta got in 13 races for each division make a complete rotation. The race committee work was stellar and praised by the competitors. Overall it was a fantastic regatta and teams are already looking forward to next year to the 66th Timme Angsten Regatta November 17th and 18th 2012.
The racing was tracked by Kattack and replays of all the races can be viewed on the Timme Angsten page of www.Chicagoyachtclub.org <

ICSA Match Race Nationals
St. Francis Yacht Club
November 19-20, 2011
J 22s
The 2011 Intercollegiate Sailing Association Match Race Nationals took place Friday, November 18 Sunday, November 20 co-hosted by California Maritime Academy and St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. The racing took place out of St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco Bay in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. The three-day event saw a number of different weather conditions including light wind, rain and strong current. The event included ten teams representing all seven ICSA conferences across the nation. The regatta was sailed in J22s and each team had one skipper and two crewmembers on their boats. Match racing involves just two boats racing against each other at a time utilizing both course tactics and boat-to-boat tactics.
The first day of racing began with a southwest breeze 8 12 knots with shifts, a variety of puffs and an ebbing current. As the day progressed the current got stronger making pre-start techniques between the boats more difficult because they had to fight with the current and position themselves properly to beat one another at the start. The current played such a role in the start that at times boats were starting on port because they could not make the line on starboard tack, a highly unusual situation. It was a long day of racing with the race committee and volunteers completing 45 races. The U.S. Naval Academy lead after the first day of racing with a record of eight wins and one loss, Roger Williams University was second with seven wins winning a tie-breaker with Tufts University who also had seven wins and Stanford University was in fourth with six wins.
Day two racing was postponed all morning due to a lack of wind. The breeze was only 2 4 knots, which was not enough for the boats to sail in given the strong current on the course. At about 2 p.m. racing resumed and the format of the regatta had to be amended due to the late start. A Gold Round Robin was eliminated for the top six teams, which would have determined the seeding for them in the quarterfinals. The Repechage round instead began the days racing with the teams in 7th 10th places competing for the last two spots in the quarterfinals. University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin advanced to the quarterfinals with the original top six teams. The light winds continued and the current remained a challenge for the teams especially on the downwind leg where the current swept the boats sideways across the course.
The third and last day of the event sailors were again greeted by light breeze on the Bay and the usual strong current. Sailing resumed with the remaining races in the quarterfinals as boats fought the current and light wind. The teams who advanced to the semi-finals were Navy, Stanford, Roger Williams and University of Southern Florida. In a repechage semi-final round the remaining teams sailed for 5th 8th place. Simultaneously, a knockout round between the University of Oregon and the University of Texas A&M took place with the teams finishing 9th and 10th respectively in the event.
After all of the semi-finals racing completed it was on to the finals with a match up between Roger Williams and Navy and University of Southern Florida (USF) and Stanford. After the first few races there was a large wind shift and some rain came in which caused the finals and petit finals racing to be postponed. With everything re-set the racing continued with Stanford and USF in the petit finals and Roger Williams and Navy in the finals. Stanford won the petit finals placing third at Nationals and USF therefore finished 4th. Going into the third finals race the racing was close and Navy and Roger Williams were all tied up. The breeze had increased with the wind shift making for better sailing at this point. In the end Navy took the last race winning Match Race Nationals and Roger Williams finished second in some fantastic sailing.
St. Francis Yacht Club and California Maritime put on a great event along with the help of volunteers and umpires who are an integral part of match racing. The racing was competitive and in challenging conditions, but the Chicago Match Race center kept viewers up to date with live video feed and Twitter updates. Find results on the event website:
