Jenn Hockema Elected Graduate Secretary
Greetings Sailors! I would like to thank you for electing me as your new Graduate Secretary. Allow me to introduce myself, I hail from Lafayette, Indiana and am a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in Youth, Adult, and Family Services. I plan on pursuing a Master of Public Affairs in Non-profit Management at IUPUI in the fall of 2007.
I am very excited to spend the next 3 years serving the District. There are many goals I have in mind for the District to accomplish. I also hope to generate many opportunities for teams to develop resources and accomplish their goals.
I would like to continue developing graduate committees such as the Long Range Planning Committee and the Competition Development Committee. The focus of the Long Range Planning Committee is to develop continuity through an alumni base so that we can continue to develop as a student organization instead of reinventing the wheel every year. The Competition Development Committee is an exciting committee that is focused on developing resources that help sailors build skills and learn more about sailing.
If you are an alumnus or are graduating within the year and would like to be a part of either of these committees please contact me.
I encourage everyone to think about the goals they set at our Midwinter meeting, and start implementing their ideas in the upcoming season. I look forward to working with all of the teams and meeting many new faces. Please contact me with any ideas, feedback, or if you would like to be a part of a Graduate Committee.

Commodore: Jocelyn Pollak
My name is Jocelyn Pollak and I am the new Commodore of the MCSA. I am a Junior at Miami of Ohio and I am majoring in International Studies and Anthropology with a minor in French. Home for me is Wilton, Connecticut and I grew up sailing at Cedar Point Yacht Club. My dad is an avid sailor and also sailed in college so at the age of seven I was put into an Opti in the Cedar PointYC Junior Program. When I got older I started sailing boats called Blue Jays; similar to a miniature Lightning. When I was 14 my sister and I moved into a 420. I have also crewed on a Thistle almost every weekend of the summer since I was 15. Whenever I can find a ride, I crew on big boats.
In high school, I started a team which grew from 4 to almost 30 members by my senior year. I had a friend that sailed for Miami so as soon as I got to school I sought out the sailing team. I raced with the team almost every weekend and had a great time. By second semester of my freshman year I was elected Vice Commodore, and by my sophomore year, I became Team Captain. I have met some of my best friends on the Miami team and had an opportunity to travel and sail all over the country.
I am really looking forward to promoting the MCSA and I hope everyone is excited for a great spring season!
Vice Commodore: Ben Miller-Todd
Currently, I am learning to race for the University of Iowa which is something that I never thought that I would be doing. I had the stereotypical mindset that there was no place in this corn-filled state of Iowa to be able to race, and that in the few places that there were big enough “lakes” (large ponds), nobody would be interested. I was dead wrong! The club at the University of Iowa is enthusiastic and energized. I quickly realized that even though we did not live on one of the Great Lakes or by the ocean, we could still have a passion to race and to introduce more people on campus to intercollegiate sailing.
I am an open major freshman student with an emphasis on pre-med. I am enrolled in a paramedic specialist class at Iowa and plan on working as a part-time paramedic next fall while taking classes. My goal is to become a trauma surgeon for an emergency room when I finally finish school. I lived in Des Moines the first 18 years of my life, and I currently live in Iowa City. Hobbies include anything that involves water (ice included), and I also like to watch movies when I cannot do something water or ice related. After becoming involved with the Iowa Sailing Team, I realized how much potential there is for sailing in the Midwest. If Iowa can find a lake and form a team for sailing, so can any school that has a sailor who is interested in starting a team. As Vice Commodore, I would like to find those sailors out there that just need some help starting a team and give them the aid that they need, while maintaining and encouraging the current members of the MCSA. I will be emailing/calling every team and I cannot wait for the spring season to start!

Robert Linden: Race Chairman
I am a senior at Michigan State University where I am studying labor and industrial relations. I plan to graduate in the fall and pursue a career in business or continue being a bum of some sort either sailing or diving. I am originally from Toledo, Ohio and learned to sail on Lake Erie. Soon after that I learned to race and it has been my main focus ever since. I race dinghies (420s, FJs, Thistles), in addition to big boats, and DN ice boats back home. I have been involved with the MSU sailing team for three years and have served as vice commodore, and commodore. While I was not able to go to Midwinters due to our teams involvement at the Strictly Sail boat show, I heard it was a great event and a lot of positive progress was made. When I heard that the Race Chair position was not filled I decided to pursue the office in order to give something back to the MCSA. I am looking forward to a great season and I hope everyone else is too. Please feel free to contact me and ask any questions. Thank you

Caroline Sundman: Publicity Secretary
After my first sailing experience at just 7 weeks old, strapped to the chart table of "Glory Days" with a few bungee cords, I have grown to love the sport of sailing. Since then, I have competed for the past 12 years in everything from optimists to Farr 40s and I grew up sailing out of the many yacht clubs throughout Cleveland, Ohio. My parents are MCSA alumni and therefore I couldn't help myself from getting involved.
For those of you who I have yet to meet, my name is Caroline Sundman and I am currently a Sophomore at Ohio University where I am majoring in Retail Merchandising with minors in Business and Art. I will be juggling the job of both Commodore of our sailing team as well as Publicity Secretary of the MCSA, but I am more then ready to take on these positions.
My main priority is recognition and promotion of our district. I plan to accomplish these goals primarily through our booth at Strictly Sail, which I also plan on expanding this year, and by promoting competitive
sailing within our district, mainly among prospective high schoolers interested in collegiate sailing. I would also like to continue to gain recognition among other sailing organizations and yacht clubs as well as further potential sponsors.
Feel free to contact me with any ideas or suggestions at care799@aol.com or 440.669.6557. See you in the spring!
Cheers and Smooth Sailing! Caroline
David Altschuler: Special Interests Coordinator
Hi everyone. I’m David Altshuler, the new Special Interests Representative. I’m a freshman at the University of Michigan, very much undecided on a major. My hometown is Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan where I grew up sailing on Lake St. Clair. I’ve been a dinghy sailor all of my life with not much big boat experience. I’m very excited to continue my career in college.
I’m also looking forward to my new responsibilities on the Board. I have had experience with organizing and planning specific events focused on fundraising, athletics, and charity contributions. I think this will translate well into my new role on the board. I am learning more about our great district every day. As a freshman, I think that it is important for me not only to fulfill the responsibilities of my office as best I can, but to also become part of a strong foundation for the future of the MCSA.
I think that we have the makings of a terrific year, both on and off the water. One of the most important elements of the MCSA’s success is to maintain strong communication between everyone in the district. From what I’ve seen, we have a lot of enthusiastic and intelligent people that have terrific ideas for the upcoming season. Communication is the best way to utilize our talents. I am excited to hear from anyone and everyone who has ideas specifically for me and for the entire district as well. Here’s to a great year!
Mark Dunsworth: Equipment Information
Coordinator
Hello MCSA, I'm Mark Dunsworth your new Equipment Information Coordinator. I'm in my fourth of five years at the University of Minnesota, and I've had the pleasure of sailing in the MCSA every year I've been in school. Sailing with the Minnesota team I've also had the privilege of representing the MCSA at a number of championships and out of district regattas, and I look forward to the upcoming regattas this spring and next fall. During the summer I race Lasers and MC, E and A Scows on White Bear Lake, Minnesota. I also coach 420s and Lasers at the Wayzata Yacht Club with our team's head coach Cappy Capper. During the school year I work for Red Bull energy drink, Helly Hansen, and the Gopher Women's Hockey Team. I am looking forward to serving on the MCSA board, and I hope I can use my knowledge and resources to help increase the number of fleets within our district. I believe that if we build up the competitiveness of the smaller teams, our district will benefit as a whole. Please feel free to contact me with questions about anything. I'm always willing to chat.
Kelly J. Nichols: Intersectional Coordinator
Greetings MCSA!
My name is Kelly Nichols and I am your new Intersectional Coordinator. I am a 2004 alumnus of the University of Minnesota where I sailed all four years I was in college. I was born and raised in Minnesota and I have spent my whole life sailing here. There are actually a lot of lakes and it does get warm enough to sail for a little while in the summer or if you are in college, sailing in November. I began my illustrious sailing career on Sunfish and Scows and moved to 420’s and FJ’s in college. In the summer I try to have fun with the big boats on Capri 25’s, J22’s and E Scows. I also enjoy an occasional ride on the family scow with my mother clutching her life jacket yelling at my father to “put the boat down”.
I graduated with a degree in Political Science with a concentration in Global Politics. I was also the Fundraising Chair, Vice Commodore and Co-Capitan of the team. My memories of college will forever be highlighted by my collegiate sailing experience … 24 hours of driving in a 72 hour weekend, driving to Michigan 3 times in one semester, the Davis Cup always on my Birthday, Nationals in Hawaii and Detroit, the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, spring break in Annapolis, freezing my fingers off at the Timme Angston and of course all of the friends I have made along the way.
I am currently not using my major and working at the corporate office of a health club call Life Time Fitness in Human Resources (some of you in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio might know it). I miss working outside in the summer teaching sailing, but my cube faces a window so at least I get to look outside.
I am really excited to be working with the MCSA again. My goal for the MCSA is to increase participation in out of district regattas. I will be your resource to get berths and invitations (contact me FIRST!). Let me know if there is anything I can do to help your team.

Two protests filed, one was heard, resulting in a DSQ.
Sunday: 6 more races completed in both divisions for a total of 12 races. Gold cups were sailed in 5-12 knots from the northeast, later in the day the breeze shifted to the east. Sunny skies, with one protest heard, resulting in a DSQ. Thanks to Bern Noack and John Vandemoer for hearing the protest. Also thanks to the CofC sailors who helped run a great event.

Feb. 11-12, 2006
We sailed 6A and 4B Races IN 420'S. The course was a Gold Cup. The wind was 15 to 20 MPH from the SSW, with some large waves while the current was going out. We had some gusts in the mid-30's. No Protests. Two redress requests granted. A bit of carnage, making for some good spectating.
After about an hour postponement, due to excessive wind, we managed to have 5 A races and 7 B races. The wind was from the W shifting NNW at 10-20 MPH, with temperatures in the mid 40's. We sailed gold cup courses. No protests filed.
