Casey Ray Elected Commodore
I want to thank all of you for voting to elect me as Commodore of the MCSA. I feel honored to take this position and am very excited to get to work.
To be a good Commodore I think it is important to get to know the people who you work for and the first step in doing that is allowing all of you to get to know me. I grew up in a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan called Saint Joseph. When I was little I used to water ski and tube behind our motorboat and when I was eight years old my parents signed me up for sailing classes at our local sailing school. As you can tell I caught the fever. I am now the director of that same sailing school and this summer will mark my seventh year as an instructor there. I started racing in my middle school years and since then have sailed on J/24s, Lasers, 420s, MCs, Mumm 30s and more. I did some high school racing; though a lack of participation from others made it difficult to regularly attend regattas. When I came to MSU I was very exited to sail and as a freshman I became Commodore of our team. Now I am still going strong as a junior and can't wait till the season starts up again later this month.
Outside of sailing, in my other life, I like to go backpacking, kayaking, scuba diving and whatever else you can do outside. I played soccer and was the captain of the swim team in high school. Academically, my major is Biological Science and, in no small part due to teaching sailing, I am planning on becoming a high school or middle school teacher.
Our district has always been one determined to have the best sailing possible with the limited resources that are available to our members. We do the best we can, and I think all of you will agree, we have a great time doing it. It is my goal to do whatever I can to make sailing in the MCSA more competitive while ensuring that the friendly atmosphere we enjoy so much is never diminished. I have and will be thinking of ideas to achieve this, but I want to impress on all of you that your ideas matter too. I want to be approachable so please if you have any ideas to help let me know, and if you see me at a regatta say hi. This promises to be a great year and I look forward to seeing all of you on the water.

Saturday: Racing was postponed due to forecasted thunderstorms early in the day. Heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms limited racing to two A division races. Courses were windward/leeward, with moderate breeze from the southeast. B division was sent out, but racing was abandoned for the day due to nearby lightning. One protest was filed and disallowed.
Sunday: 10 races were completed (4 in A Division and 6 in B Division) in a dying NW breeze. Conditions were relatively flat and rotations were completed on the water. One redress was filed and breakdown points awarded. Boats: 420

Jenn Hockema, Conference Commissoner
I'm beginning my second year as Conference Commissoner. I graduated from Purdue University in 2005 with a degree called Youth, Adult, and Family services. I work for the American Youth Foundation-Merrowvista in New Hampshire. I will be there until June. This fall I plan on beginning graduate school in Indianapolis. I learned how to sail at Camp Miniwanca when I was 12 years old. I began formally racing in college since then. I have competed in various regattas and last summer I co-led a 5 day sailing trip on trimarans with high school aged participants. I am excited to get the spring sailing season going and look forward to working with the new board.

Dan Morris, Race Chairman
I am a freshman at the University of Michigan. I am the Race Chair for the upcoming year. It is my job to get NOR's out to all the MCSA'ers. I grew up racing offshore on the Great Lakes and racing dinghys on Lake Minnetonka. Sailing has been my first priority for as long as I can remember. I started coaching Opti's and 420's when I was 12. I was also the captain of my high-school sailing team. I think that my experience coaching and as captain will help me do a good job for the MCSA. I can't wait for the season to get started. I can tell it will be exciting. Sail Fast...
Kelly Nichols, Intersectional Coordinator
I am going on year two as your Intersectional Coordinator. I am a 2004 Alumnus of the University of Minnesota where I sailed all four years I was in college. I graduated with a degree in Political Science with a concentration in Global Politics. I just celebrated my two year anniversary of not using my major working in human resources at the corporate office of a major health club called Life Time Fitness. I try to continue to sail as much as I can in the summer on big boats as well as our family scow. "Summer vacation" becomes more difficult once you have to work all the way through it.
I am glad to continue my service to the MCSA as your Intersectional Coordinator. For those of you who are not aware what I do...I am the first point of contact for any out of district regatta your team is interested in attending. I will make my best effort in getting teams a spot in all the regattas they want to attend. Intersectional competition is the best way for our teams to gain experience and begin to be recognized as top notch sailors. My goal is always to increase our participation in out of district regattas. Feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do to help your team.
Matt Reschke, Publicity Secretary
I am from Wilmette IL land a Freshman at the University of Illinois. My major is Premed/IB. I sailed at Loyola Academy through high school after learning to sail on the East coast. As a high school Junior I spent a year study abroad afloat a 188 foot tallship, sailing around the world. Outside of sailing, I am active member of my fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha, tutoring elementary school children, although sailing is a large portion of my life.

Mike Stephenson , Special Interests Representative
I am a junior at the University of Wisconsin planning on graduating with a Masters in Accounting. I grew up just 20 minutes from campus in Middleton, Wisconsin and had planned on being a Badger. Before I came to UW Madison, my sailing experience consisted of a couple of hours on a sunfish on a glassy lake. I came to school without any intentions of sailing, but was convinced to try it out after two cute girls asked if I wanted to practice with the team. As a member of the team I have helped host over 15 regattas, sailed all over the country, and have had a ridiculously good time. I've helped my team by serving as team Treasurer and Co-captain.
I sought the position of Special Interest Chair, because it that allows me to focus on any issues the district or teams think are important. After attending my third Midwinters meeting, I feel the problems of recruiting and fundraising are the key to a successful team, which will in turn make us a successful district. I look forward to working with teams on helping them in these areas or anything else they feel is important.

Ryan Zupon, Equipment Information Coordinator
I am a freshman at Miami of Ohio and am planning on studying economics here. In addition to my position on the MCSA board, I am also the Equipment Manager for our club team here at Miami. In the summers, I work as the Head Instructor for Orienta Beach Club on Long Island Sound and frequent my club, Larchmont Yacht, where I race FJs, Vanguard 15s, Lasers, J105s, 109s and 120s. I am looking forward to becoming an active and competitive member of the MCSA, and so far this first semester has gone really well. During my tenure as Equipment Coordinator, I would like to see not just an increase in the number of boats in our district, but an increase in the quality of the existing fleets. By bringing up the overall quality of our racing fleets, we can hopefully see results not only in the performance of our teams, but a higher number of berths at the regattas we host. If anybody is looking for new boats, parts or just has any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me. Sail fast, live slow.
George Griswold, Treasurer
I begin another three year term as the MCSA's Treasurer. It is a long time since I graduated from the College of Wooster in 1961, but the time has gone fast and College Sailing has improved over the years due to the efforts of many people and a host of technical changes. I look forward to seeing the MCSA become more competitive without losing its strength as a student centered organization.
In addition to my interests in keeping the MCSA financially sound, I also continue to serve on the ICSA All America Selection, Eligibility, and Rules Committees. Outside of College Sailing I continue to be a US SAILING Senior Judge and this past fall added certification as a US SAILING Club Race Officer. I also serve as Chair of the US SAILING Singlehanded Sailing Championship Committee.
I enjoy doing woodworking and in the past year have made perpetual trophies for the Notre Dame Freshman and the Fall Fury Intersectional Regattas. I am currently working on a perpetual trophy for the Ohio State Buckeye Intersectional. I continue to have an interest in model railroading and have built a garden railroad having about 125 ft of stainless steel track behind my garage. I hope to get enough time to be able to convert my engines to run on battery power with radio control.
Midwinter Meeting
February 9-11, 2007
Thank you to the University of Toledo Sailing Club for hosting the Midwinter Meeting of the MCSA. Brian Wholehan and the members of the Toledo Sailing Club made the Midwinter Meeting one of the best in recent history. This is unusual because Toledo is one of the MCSA's newest members.
Registration was well done. There was a good discussion of the issues in the MCSA at the Open Forum. Teams had an opportunity to exchange problems, solutions and show off their new pinnies at the All Team Activity. In the afternoon Scheduling was completed in record time due to the hard work of Race Chairman Rob Linden, Conference Commissioner, Jenn Hockema , and Intersectional Coordinator, Kelly Nichols. For those who weren't involved in scheduling George Griswold gave a seminar on regatta scoring using the Navy Scoring Program as a model. The Annual Business Meeting went smoothly as new Members were approved, some Members had their status adjusted, and one Member was dropped. The new Executive Board was elected without any positions being contested. Rupert Conner President of the Luxury Yacht Group gave a presentation on what it would be like to work on a luxury yacht.
In the evening a banquet was held. The keynote speaker was Skip Dieball of Quantum Sails. In addition the winners of each of the MCSA Championships were announced and the perpetual trophies were presented for the evening. The MCSA Awards for Best Regatta, Student Leader and Sportsmanship in addition to the All Conference team members were also announced.
Ben Miller-Todd, Vice Commodore
I hope that everyone is having a perfect semester and gearing up for sailing season starting in less than a month! The University of Iowa team loves to "warm up" for the season by iceboating and having a great time socializing. I can only hope that your team is able to get together and have as great a time.
I am a born, raised, corn fed Iowan at heart. I grew up in Des Moines and have not lived anywhere else other than Iowa City. Up until my senior year I thought that I was headed to Iowa State University to major in engineering. Then I took EMT training in Des Moines. I discovered the world of Emergency Medicine and have not been able to abandon the idea of becoming an ER doctor from the University of Iowa Medical School. I am currently a sophomore at the University of Iowa majoring in English with an emphasis on Pre-Medicine. I am a self taught sailor since the age of 14, and I am starting my fourth semester of eligibility in the MCSA. I hope to build up the MCSA's team base and strengthen the current team foundation. I am looking forward to working with as many of you as possible and I wish you the best season this spring!
