Volume 62, Number 1 March 2008
Katrina Barnes: MCSA Commodore for 2008
I'm a junior at Miami University double majoring in Anthropology and International Studies. Although I grew up in Cleveland, OH on Lake Erie, I had never dinghy raced before college, however in my senior year of high school I sailed Tall Ships off the coast of Los Angeles. This experience initiated my love for sailing. I joined the Miami Sailing Team my freshman year and have participated in many regattas as well as held the positions of Secretary and Commodore of the team in years prior. Last spring I sailed around the Equatorial Central Pacific for a semester abroad on the Tall Ship, the Robert C. Seamans collecting oceanographic data. It was an amazing six weeks at sea! Besides sailing, I love to travel. I have been to five countries and am hoping to add many more to my list in the years to come. I am very excited to be on the MCSA Board and am interested to observe the new Nationals system, how it affects the MCSA, and what I can do to better help our sailors excel. I am looking forward to a great year ahead of us!
2008 Nelson Roltsch Regatta
Tulane University/Southern Yacht Club
February 2-3, 2008
Day ones winds blew 6-11 knots from the South-Southwest on smooth waters, and a total of 12 races were held. The second day held heavier winds from the South with occasional shifts from South-Southwest, pushing up from 15 knots to over 20 on light chop. 12 races were held on the second day for a total of 24 races for the regatta. Four teams were No-Shows on day two of this Mardi Gras weekend regatta: Texas A&M, Texas A&M Galveston, University of North Texas, and Vanderbilt. The second day held two protests. The University of South Alabama protested Boston University but the protest was disallowed. In addition, Texas protested Florida and this protest was also disallowed.

Vice Commodore: Bruce Martin
Year: Junior - University of Michigan Major: Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering Hometown: Diego Martin, Trinidad, W.I.
I started sailing Optis in Summer 1995 with my cousin and best friend, and never looked back. After sailing Optis for 5 years, I got into Laser/420s and big boats, sailing those until I came to Michigan. I'm serving my 2nd term as a member of Michigan's Executive Board.
Two of the things I want to work on this year are improved practice relationships between nearby teams with joint practices and scrimmages, and more opportunities for big boat racing for the MCSA.
When I'm not mixing it up on the racecourse in a 420, I'm in the pool playing inner tube water polo, or on the squash court.
Race Chairman: Tod Reynolds
After enjoying my first year of college sailing in the Midwest last year I am excited to be this years Race Chairman. I am a sophomore electrical engineering major at Northwestern University and have been sailing competitively since age 6. I grew up sailing on Barnegate Bay in New Jersey racing opti's and lasers on a junior team and sailing E-scows with my dad. Some of my sailing highlights include a 3rd place finish at CORK in full rigs and a 26th place finish at Finn Youth Worlds this past summer in Moscow, Russia. Outside of sailing I enjoy theatrical lighting design, am a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and participate in Northwestern's autonomous robot competition.
In addition to keeping the regatta schedule running smoothly as race chairman, I hope to boost participation at the Harken clinic by gearing it towards advanced sailors, work with other districts club teams to develop a club team national championship, and improve attendance by out of district teams at the Timmie Angsten regatta.

Publicity Secretary: Amberose Kramer
I am a sophomore at the University of Minnesota majoring in Chemical Engineering. I come from Racine, Wisconsin and first started sailing at the age of 13 by joining Sea Scouts, B.S.A. Through scouts I attended adult sailing school, sailed once a week on a Catalina-27 and crewed on the Penny Express for Wednesday night races out of the Racine Yacht Club. I started sailing 420s at the age of 16, competing through the Chicago Yacht Club. At the age of 11, I was an exchange student in Paris, France. Since then I try to travel as much as possible and am currently enrolled in a Physics class taught in Italy and France this coming May.
Special Interests Coordinator: Matt Kirley
I'm Matt Kirley, the Special Interests Chair for 08-09 and also Co-Captain of Wisconsin for 07-08. I am currently a junior majoring in Physics. I grew up in Shakopee, MN, a suburb of the twin cities. I hadn't sailed before I started college, my first week of school I went to a practice and sort of just stuck with it. I sail an e-scow during the summer on Lake Mendota, and I also enjoy skiing and rock climbing. During the winter, I volunteer as a youth ski instructor at a nearby ski hill.

Equipment Information Coordinator: Sam House
Conference Commissioner: Jenn Hockema
Hello my name is Jenn Hockema and I have been the Graduate Secretary, now Conference Commissioner since 2006. I graduated from Purdue University in 2005 with a degree in Youth, Adult, and Family Services. My freshman year, I happened to be walking across campus the evening of the Purdue Sailing Club Call-out. I attended, joined the club, and served in a variety of roles from Publicity Secretary to Commodore. I have very fond memories of college sailing both on and off the water, and that is why I decided to run for a graduate office.
Currently I work as a Program Coordinator for the American Youth Foundation. I coordinate and design experiential education programs. The purpose of my work is to provide programs in which kids have fun, safe, positive experiences. In my spare time, I like to stay pretty active and enjoy boating of any kind, hiking, and bicycling. I'm also hoping to join a yacht club in my area this spring.
I look forward to attending regattas this spring, seeing those sailors I know, and meeting sailors I haven't met yet.
Intersectional Coordinator: Kelly Nichols
MCSA Sailors - My name is Kelly Nichols and I am continuing my role as Intersectional Coordinator. I am a 2004 alumnus of the University of Minnesota where I sailed all four years. I grew up sailing in Minnesota on scows and sunfish. I moved to racing when I got to college. I am currently living in the Boston, MA area and loving it. I work in Human Resources for a company called The MENTOR Network. They provide services for vulnerable adults and children to help them become more independent in the community. I have kept up sailing here in Boston on the Charles and I cant wait to cheer on the MCSA when they travel to the East Coast! I am really excited to continue my work with the MCSA. I will be your resource to get berths and invitations to intersectional regattas (contact me FIRST! and EARLY!). I am hoping to streamline the signup process to make sure everyone gets the regattas they want to attend. If you have any ideas or questions feel free to drop me a line. Sail fast.
Treasurer: George Griswold
I continue to attend regattas serving as a Judge. This past year I became Certified as a US SAILING Club Race Officer. I continue to serve as Chair of US SAILINGs Singlehanded Championship Committee, serve on the ICSA Eligibility Committee as Chair, and on the Rules and All America Committees. I continued my practice of building trophies for MCSA Major events completing one for the Buckeye Intersectional this year. My interest in G scale model railroading has also continued with the acquisition of a E8 locomotive which necessitated reworking my garden railroad.
MCSA Midwinter Meeting
The MCSA Midwinter meeting was held at the Chicago Yacht Club February 9th. Tom McGrath was the organizer. In addition to the Scheduling Meeting a number of presentations were given: George Griswold Rules, Joey Harris Preparing your Team, Tod Reynolds The New ICSA Dinghy Study, Cliff Black Team Racing from an Umpires Prospective, The Boating Industry - Kate Muller.
The Keynote Speaker at the Awards Banquet was Dawn Riley, Americas Cup sailor. In addition to her various sailing experiences on the high seas, she reminisced about her college sailing experiences as a member of the Michigan State Sailing Team.
