Volume 64, Number 1 March 2010

Commodore: Margaux Stutz

I am incredibly excited to serve as Commodore this year. After being the MCSA Special Interests Chair last year, I am well aware of the ongoing projects, problems and successes of the Conference and look forward to continuing to improve this wonderful organization. I am currently co-captain of my team and am heavily involved in planning 2010 Nationals. I am looking for ways to organize the entire Conference to become involved in the event. One thing I'm working on is a large ICSA alumni regatta and banquet that I hope will serve as a reunion for so many of the sailors that have gone through the program and specifically the MCSA. I also hope to increase our assistance to developing teams by offering more regattas and clinics. I am a junior at the University of Wisconsin majoring in economics with an emphasis on math and finance. I am the Director of the Hoofer Youth Program at UW which teaches over 400 kids to sail, windsurf, kayak, and canoe in a variety of boats each summer. I learned to sail only 2 years before college at the South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. I truly value the opportunities in sailing and leadership the MCSA has given me and I hope to contribute as much back to the Conference as I can.

Sugar Bowl Regatta

Southern Yacht Club, New Orleans, LA

December 30-31, 2009

The first day of racing started off in about 12 knots from the west. The wind varied from 8-14 knots through out the day, and rain came in and out all day. Eight races were completed in each division.

Day two offered very little wind, from 0-5 knots from the west, and racing didn't start until 11:30 as we waited for wind to fill in. Only two races in each division were completed as the wind continued to be very light and fluky throughout the day.

South Alabama and Auburn were No Shows.

Mallory Usen: Vice Commodore

I am delighted to take on the position of Vice Commodore for the MCSA this upcoming year. Currently, I am a Junior at Northwestern University in Evanston pursuing a major in Communications Studies, with a minor in the Business Institutions Program and a certificate from Medill in Integrated Marketing Communications.

I began sailing at overnight camp in Wisconsin during my childhood and started racing competitively when I enrolled at Northwestern. I now find myself traveling to regattas on the weekends and practicing on beautiful Lake Michigan during the week – and it’s the best lifestyle in the world. On the Northwestern University Sailing Team (NUST), I am in charge of designing and ordering all of the apparel for members of the team, their families, alumni, and supporters. NUST is a phenomenal organization that has given me a meaning and a family on campus and I look forward to developing this bond with the MCSA as well.

As Vice Commodore of the MCSA, I look forward to working with emerging sailing teams interested in joining the MCSA and maintaining the MCSA’s strong membership. I am a highly accessible, motivated, and passionate person who is ready to dedicate time and energy to the MCSA.

Nelson Roltsch Regatta

Tulane University, New Orleans

February 13-14, 2010

This weekend's regatta was dominated by very light winds out of the north. Saturday was cold with very fluky wind from the northwest. The breeze peeked at 6 knots around 1pm before dying back down to 2-4 knots. 6 races were sailed in each division. Sunday was warmer but again featured wind between 2-6 knots. The wind direction constantly shifted between the northwest and northeast, keeping the Markset very busy and making it difficult to get off races. 3 races were sailed in each division before the cutoff time. Emory and UNT both were not able to make it to the regatta due to the snow, and UVA was a no show.

Rachel Barch: Race Chairman

I grew up sailing on my parents' TTens out of Belmont Harbor on Lake Michigan. I sailed Optis out of the Chicago Yacht Club and raced on the CYC race team in high school. I co-founded and was the captain of my high school sailing team at Walter Payton College Prep in downtown Chicago. I also did a bunch of V15 racing this past summer with the CCYC. I am a freshmen at the University of Michigan studying engineering. I am obsessed with the Michigan Sailing Team and the MCSA and am excited to serve on the Board this year!

Frank Mendelblatt Memorial Team Race

U. South Florida

February 12-13, 2010

It started off to a North easterly at around 10 knots that rapidly degraded to about 4 knots. Almost all races to complete the gold round were sailed before the wind died at around 1:00 pm. The race committee waited for about 45 minutes for the breeze to settle from the North West to start the last 4 races.

Big thanks to the USF sailing team for helping run the event and our co-host Eckerd College.

Northwestern was scheduled to participate, but was unable to attend due to failure of transportation due to a snowstorm. They have been excused from a No Show penalty.

Allison Prange: Publicity Secretary

Allison started sailing when she was 6 on Okauchee Lake in Southeastern Wisconsin. Coming from a sailing family, it always seemed like the natural decision to sail. She started in Optis and moved to X boats, sailing in the ILYA. Allison had a laser for a few years, but never got into it seriously. Now, she prefers scow sailing in the summer, particularly C Scows. After deciding to go to school in Minnesota she joined the sailing team the second semester of her freshman year with some persuading from the board. Her first event was the team's Spring Training trip to Annapolis. She was content crewing for the first day or two (despite her clumsiness), but when the coach heard that she had been skipping scows her whole life he got excited and passed her the tiller. That was the first and last time Allison ever crewed in a 420. Her sophomore year she joined the board as Secretary and this year moved to Vice Commodore. Allison is majoring in Architecture focusing on sustainable development with a minor in studio art. She is thrilled to be on the MCSA board and as Publicity Secretary hopes to push the Alumni event at Nationals, team recruiting, and more widespread recognition for the MCSA.

Charleston Spring Intersectional Regatta

College of Charleston

February 20-21, 2010

It was a beautiful weekend in Charleston..

Saturday The course for the first A set was a W 4 with a gate, sailed in a 3-5 knot NNW wind. After a short postponement ashore racing was restarted in a SSE wind @ 5-10 knots. Course 5's and 6's were used. The ebb tide was strong. Four protests were filled resulting in one DSQ and one RAF.

Sunday After a short postponement ashore the southerly filled at about 5-8 knots and racing was started just before noon. The tide was a slack flood when racing began and built to a strong ebb by the end of the day. All races were w4's & w5's as well as one w3 with an offset a gate and pin boat. One protest was filed resulting in a DSQ. THANK YOU Mitch and Alana for hearing protests.

Nathaniel Walden: Special Interests Representative

I was born and raised on Peaks Island, a small island just off the coast of Maine. From an early age sailing has been a large part of my life. My dad was an avid sailor and passed his love of the sport on to me. My father also made projects of rebuilding boats. In addition to yearly maintenance on his International 210, he extensively rebuilt a pair of International 110’s that hadn't seen the water in years. I spent a great deal of time during my early winters with him in his workshop first watching, and then helping him rebuild sailboats.

Once I was old enough I began taking summer sailing lessons at the Trefthen-Evergreen Improvement Association on the island. For the first couple of years I learned in turnabouts, then moved to 420's once I turned 10. When I was 12 I joined the race team and began sailing on the Maine Interclub Race Circuit (MIRC). Over the next several years, I continued sailing in MIRC races during the summer as well as participating in several Junior Olympics. Once I turned 18, I began instructing at T.E.I.A., teaching the beginning Optimist sailors and the 420 Race Team.

In the fall of 2008 I began my education at the University of Notre Dame. My freshmen year I raced in a number of regattas across the Midwest and was also able to travel to Florida to participate in the Sloop Championships. My freshmen year I was also elected to be the Vice-Captain of the team, responsible for helping the Captain run practices. This spring I was elected Captain. I have a busy schedule as a mechanical engineer major which kept me from sailing as much as I would have liked to this Fall, but I'm looking forward to sailing as much as possible this spring!

Tech Score Adopted by ICSA

At the ICSA Winter Meeting the ICSA Board of Directors agreed to adopt the Tech Score scoring program for all ICSA Dinghy events. ICSA President Mitch Brindley indicated that ICSA is still in the process of migrating the scoring program from the MIT server to an ICSA server. As of now the scoring program is at the following website. http://techscore.mit.edu/

Schools hosting regattas should get and practice with this new scoring program well before their event.

MCSA Approves the Creation a Foundation

The MCSA Membership approved the creation of a Foundation to manage its financial reserves. Three trustees will manage the funds of the Foundation. The Foundation will be created as a separate corporation which will seek tax exception status. As the reserves which are in the form of certificates of deposit come due they will be transferred to the Foundation. The earnings from the reserves will be used by the MCSA Board to fund special projects such as but not limited to: travel grants, running clinics, running regattas, equipment, insurance, and hiring consultants or staff.

Will Andreae: Equipment Information Coordinator

I grew up in Darien CT, which is a town on Long Island Sound. I started sailing Optimists when I was seven years old at the town sailing program. When I was twelve I hopped in a 420 which I've been sailing ever since. Later I joined the High School sailing team. During high school we did a lot of team racing.

I didn’t think that I would be sailing in college especially in Southwestern Ohio. I went to a meeting, then to a few regattas, and then the team became a family to me. My passion for sailing was back.

I joined a fraternity at Miami and I play the sax in some jam bands. I’ve been as involved as I can be with the team going to all the regattas. I have also tried to help out wherever a hand is needed. I hope to stay involved with the team and work hard as the new MCSA’s equipment manager. I also plan on working as a sailing instructor in Connecticut this summer as well as racing Sonars. I’m really excited to be staying active on the water.
