March 2011 Tell Tale
Volume 65, Number 1 March 2011
Commodore: Geoff Pedrick
I grew up sailing in Newport, Rhode Island yet somehow made my way to the third coast to sail (and study?) in college. I am working towards a mechanical engineering degree at Northwestern University, but still make sure I squeeze in enough time to get out on the water almost every day during the season.
Now in my third year in the MCSA, I feel well acquainted with the district and ready to help lead it toward an exciting future. We have fallen behind much of the country in our level of competition, so I hope we can keep pushing the ceiling with our top teams, however I still want to ensure every team in our district participates in as many regattas as it can, from smaller local ones to the few regattas we have that push 20 boats and national qualifiers, so everyone experiences the thrill of competition and learns from each other. I spent the last year as captain of the Northwestern sailing team and have worked with many on my team and on others to improve our general level and enjoyment of sailing. As commodore, I hope to continue this trend and additionally communicate with others outside the district to learn from them and emulate their successes. This year’s executive board looks like a great group and one that will be very motivated to improve our district in every way possible, so I am very excited to work with them and see what we can do for everyone.

Intersectional Regatta
420/FJ
Summary Thursday, December 30: Eight races in each devision were sailed on the first day of racing. Conditions were shifty from the East between 5 and 12 and greatly varied throughout the day. The rotation was completed on the second day of racing. Conditions were again shifty from the East and built as the day went on, eventually reaching about 20 kts. There were scattered showers on the second day of racing. Temperatures were in the 70s on both days! Congratulations to the University of Connecticut for their first place finish. Many thanks to our race committee and volunteers who made this regatta a successful event.

Samuel “Sam” Todd – Vice Commodore
I am a Junior at Purdue University. I started sailing at an early age with my family in northern Michigan with my family during the summer. I started getting into racing during high school, something different, after not wanting to come to school early for soccer. I had a great time sailing around the Midwest and meeting lots of sailors. I am excited to continue my experiences here in the MCSA and am excited to be Vice Commodore and hope that all the regatta’s can go smoothly.

Saturday, February 19: We had a beautiful day in Charleston for racing with temps in the 70s and clear skies. A below average low tide in the middle of the afternoon did put a dent in some of the racing, but at the end of the day, 6 A division and 4 B division W4s were completed. The breeze was between NNW and NNE all day around 8 knots. We completed one set before postponing ashore for an extended lunch break that lasted during max ebb. 4 A races and 2 B races were sailed during the tide switch and made for good racing. There were no breakdowns and 1 protest was filed, resulting in 1 DSQ (Rule 13).

Kirston Wilson: Publicity Secretary
I began sailing at the tender age of 8 on Big Cormorant Lake in Northwestern Minnesota. The first regatta I sailed was a sunfish regatta with my cousin Brandon. After having so much fun, my parents enrolled me in sailing school on Pelican Lake. I began sailing opti’s and quickly moved on to 420’s, but spent majority of the weekends sailing on my dad’s E-scow. After high school I decided to go to the University of Minnesota, as a math major. Right away, I joined the sailing team and fell in love with the college sailing atmosphere. Freshmen year I was elected captain of the team, as a sophomore I was the secretary, and now I am the vice commodore of the team. I have enjoyed my time in the MCSA, and as Publicity Secretary, I hope to promote all the great things that the MCSA accomplishes.

Intersectional Regatta

Saturday, February 19: Warm temps nearing 80 degs in St. Petersburg for the USF Women's Intersectional. The first races were sailed in a dying northeasterly. While expectations were that it would completely glass off until the afternoon seabreeze, that was not the case. As the marks were being gathered to head in, a light but sailable southeasterly filled in for the next set. The wind continued clocking, with the next set in a southerly, and then a southwesterly, and finally a freshening westerly, building to 10 knots. Hawaii jumped out to an early lead, but later in the day USF and Charleston charged back. After 10 A division and 10 B division races, all W4, the three schools were separated by 2 points.
Sunday, February 20: The morning easterly was too light for racing, but too persistent to permit an early seabreeze. After a 4 hour delay, the course was moved into Bayboro Harbor, and 3 A and 3 B races were sailed, all W5, in a light 3-5 knot northeast breeze. Hawaii held off a strong challenge from Charleston to win the regatta, while USF fell to third.

Brendan Boylan: Special Interests Coordinator
I grew up in St. Paul MN and started sailing at age 9. I am a sophomore studying biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin - Madison where I am also on the sailing team as the Practice Captain. Sailing has been a big part of my life for almost ten years now. I raced optimists nationally and internationally for 3 years and then spent some time sailing laser radials. In the MCSA I have done fleet, team, and match racing. During my summers I have coached opti racing at Lake Calhoun Sailing School, where I learned to sail and race. This summer I am excited to be back at Calhoun to coach the 420 racing sailors.

February 26-27, 2011
Saturday: Competitors were greeted at the Stewart Walker Jr. Sailing Center with a 3-6 knot easterly wind. Sailors made their way to "the marsh" north of the Yorktown, while coaches and extras boarded the J-22's to join them in the sailing area. 35 races were completed, before the wind became very shifty and trended to the south. All competitors sailed in for a short lunch break while the RC moved the course just outside the marina. An additional 22 races were completed in a SSE wind, for a total of 57 races. All courses were College Ns. 5 protests were filed resulting in 3 DSQ's. We used an on the water observer system.
Sunday: Competitors were greeted to dense fog and a very light southerly wind. Sailing was postponed ashore until noon. Races 58-90 were completed in a SSE wind at 4-6 knots, with a flood tide. A final four round robin was sailed in a building south wind at 6-8 knots, while the tide switched. 96 races were sailed in all. Sunday's racing area was just outside of the marina. 2 protests were heard resulting in 1 DSQ.
Thanks to all of the Charleston undergrads who helped run a great event.
Thanks to John Bowden, Mike Miller, Tom Loutrel, Brian Zimmerman, and Anne Bowen for observing & hearing protests.
Big thanks to the Carolina YC, Ocean Sailing Accademy, Charleston Community Sailing, Brian Zimmerman, and Tom Loutrel for lending us motorboats.

I am a sophomore at Miami University studying Supply Chain Management and Marketing. I grew up outside of Toledo, OH sailing Optimists, FJ's, 420s and Laser Radials for North Cape YC on Lake Erie. During the summers I teach Optimists on the Long Island Sound.
As Equipment Information Coordinator, I will be organized in assisting teams to solve any equipment related issues and will work with companies to getdiscounted rates on sailing parts and apparel. My sailing experience and resources will serve the MCSA well and I am excited to be a part of the 2011 Executive Board.
Tod Reynolds, Intersectional Coordinator
I am very excited to serve as Intersectional Coordinator of the MCSA after being as Commodore two years ago. At Northwestern University I served as captain of NUST for three years and have been able to attend Single Handed and Sloop nationals along with a myriad of other dingy events. Outside of college sailing I enjoy racing Finns and E-scows with my dad and brother. I hope to one day get my act together and do an Olympic campaign in the Finn. Off the water I am an electrical engineering major concentrating on control systems and robotics and am currently on a co-op with an entertainment company in California responsible for designing a new Warner Bros. theme park in Abu Dhabi. Finally, as a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, I am the founder and Co-Chair of GreekBuild, a partnership between all 39 fraternities and sororities at Northwestern and Habitat for Humanity. I have recently taken a position as Director of the Chicago Match Race Center. As Intersectional Coordinator I hope to keep the MCSA running smoothly, streamline any process's that we can, and prepare the district for hosting the Singlehanded Nationals this fall.

Dave Elsmo: Conference Commissioner
Since I was three months old I have spent the majority of my free time engaging in all things sailing. I was born into a sailing family from Lake Michigan and spent my childhood touring all the ports that the Great Lakes have to offer. By the time I was six I found an interest in competitive sailing and enrolled in my local sailing school. During each summer I learned to sail and race competitively in the International Optimist class dinghy. Shortly I found I had outgrown the boat and began doing foredeck on my fathers 36ft C&C during weekly series racing and some long distance racing. When I turned 15 I hooked in to the local Quantum Sails loft and began learning the trade of sail design and production. Through my time with Quantum I began competing in the Chicago and Milwaukee racing circuits while competing in any major offshore competitions I could. During my time at the loft I taught sailing at my local Yacht Club as the youngest level I US Sailing Certified Instructor in the US.
By the end of High School I moved to the University of Minnesota to earn my Graduate Degree in Commercial Recreation and Recourse Management with an emphasis on Youth Development. While at Minnesota I became a competitor for their sailing team and quickly became Commodore.During my tenure at the University I began coaching for the Wayzata Community Sailing Center (WCSC) and by the end of my fifth year I moved into the roll as Assistant Director. While at WCSC I became the youngest Level I Instructor Trainer and Level II Coach Trainer in US Sailing history and am on my way to becoming a Level III US Sailing Coach. Within the last month I have accepted a position as the Head of Instruction at the University of Wisconsin Hoofers and my new role as Conference Commissioner. It is with this experience and knowledge that I look forward to working with the Conference to take each team and every sailor to their utmost potential.
