Big Ten Team Race
University of Michigan
April 3-4, 2004
Saturday: Wind: 8-15 knots, Temperature: 50's. Conditions were beautiful. The day couldn't have been better for team racing. 36 races were sailed before the conditions got colder as a cold front rolled in. The teams were easy to identify as each team was supplied with a different color of t-shirt to wear over their life jackets.
Sunday: Wind: 15-25 knots, Temperature: 30-40's. Conditions were very cold and gusty. After discussion with the competitors, it was decided that conditions were too cold and unpredictable to sail the consolation bracket, so only the final four was sailed. 12 total races were finished by about 1:30 PM.

April Fools Regatta
Miami University
April 3-4, 2004
Saturday: Sunny with temperatures almost 60 degrees. Wind out of the northwest 8-12 with a few gusts higher. Only 4 races completed in each division after a late start, many capsizes resulting in masts stuck in the mud, and having to end the day early after the crash boat motor quit running.
Sunday morning started out cloudy and cold with temperatures in the low 30's with snow showers. The sun eventually came out and 6 races were completed in each division with wind out of the northwest at 8-14, gusting to 16-17.
Note: John Carroll: RP form not filled out. 20 Points added to each Division.

Sunk'N Bucket Regatta
IUPUI
4/3/2004
The one-day Sunk 'N Bucket Regatta was held between IU, IUPUI, and PU Sailing Teams. Two boats from each team were on the water for a 6 boat fleet race. There were 6 races were sailed in breeze that began from the northwest at 15-20 knots, then shifted to the west and built to at 25-30 knots. After the A Division completed the second rotation B Division went out onto the water with winds gusting over 30 knots. Multiple boats were capsized and several sailors were in the icy water for over 6 minutes with only wetsuits. RC decided to cancel racing for safety reasons due the water temperature and wind which was forecast to continue building to 25-35 knots.

Saturday - The first day of racing proved to be exceptional as the teams sailed in 65 to 70 degree temperatures and winds of 10 to 18 out of the S-SE. 8 races were completed. The day started with Windward-leeward twice around and changed to triangles and triangle winward-leeward-leewards as the winds built. 8 schools filed for breakdown or redress points. It was found that the starting system malfunctioned with a minute to go, however the race started anyways without appropriate signals. The race committee was instructed to resail the race Sunday morning.
Sunday - The weather continued to hold steady with sunny skies, 70 degree weather and winds of 12-15 again from the S-SE. The day started with Windward-leeward twice around and changed to triangles as the winds built. Race 2A was resailed before the rotation continued. 3 schools filed for breakdown points. Minnesota filled for breakdown in race 9A, however, already having been awarded 2 breakdowns in the A division, they were scored DNS in accordance with PR 15(d).
NOTE: Ohio State did not fill out the RP Form. 20 pts per division added to their scores. NOTE2: Hope B division crews from Hope College did not indicate which races each sailed. 20 points per division added their scores. AC

Don’t You Sail No Ugly Boat!
Ward Detwiler
There is an ad on I-75 near Flint, Michigan that reads “Pasty Lou says: Don’t You Drive No Ugly Truck!” Every time I go by that ad, I chuckle. But a few weeks ago at the Buckeye regatta, I was struck with anew phrase: “Don’t You Sail No Ugly Boat!” Looking around the parking lot, and on the dock, I realized that most people don’t really take care of their travel boats. We bring crappy boats to regattas, with hiking straps that don’t work, halyards that are frayed, and epoxy haphazardly applied to the hulls. And I think that most of us do this because we figure we will only sail one race in our crappy boat, and then we won’t have to worry about it. But after getting into crappy boat after crappy boat that wasn’t mine, I realized that something needs to be done. We need to take pride in our boats.
While none of us have the available cash to buy new FJs, there are a few quick and cheap steps that you can do to spruce up your FJ so that it looks and sails like a boat half its age (which for some FJs is nearing two decades). Here are some quick tips and points of improvement:
Start by wet-sanding the whole hull, using a finer grit wet-sand paper each time. Maybe go from 200 to 350 to 400 to 600. This will get your hull as smooth as a baby’s bottom. In addition to that, polishing the hull will make it sparkle, at least hiding some of your boats faults. Also, sand down and fair out any unsightly repair work, and fill properly any holes or dings. A wad of duct tape covering a goober of 5200 filling a hole in the bow is neither fast nor pretty. While you’re down there, attach new gaskets. This will cost less than $20, and it will make the boat faster and drier. There is nothing more irritating than having water spewing up from the centerboard trunk.
Make sure that you have TWO pins in the spreaders. I have seen several boats where the spreader is only pinned in one place, making the mast bend more, and increasing the risk of a broken spreader and dropped rig. While you are thinking about things that are out-of-sight and out-of-mind, make sure that your batten pockets in the main are all amply sewn so that no battens will fly out while racing
Replace any frayed or rotted line, especially if it is attached to a jib halyard or hiking strap. The things on the other ends of these lines are very important. Replacing the lines with cool colors also improves the boats speed and overall crew morale.
Make sure that there are actually pins and ring dings that are both appropriately sized and shaped (i.e. not bent) in all of the important places. Be sure to check that the ratchet blocks on the main sheet and jib cars have springs underneath them. This will make all of your boat handling smoother, as sheets will not get caught underneath and blocks will not twist. Also, as we saw happen on one of our boats, make sure the jib blocks are screwed on to the jib cars. This will save you the inconvenience of transforming your crew’s foot into a jib lead.
If your deck has a whole bunch of rivets filling holes where old hardware once was, you should drill out the rivets and fill the holes with Marine-Tex or 5200. This will not only keep water out of the hull, but you will also cut down on the chance of getting your dry-suit ripped by a protruding rivet.
This list is short, and I am sure that there are a bunch of cheap and easy fixes I left out, but it is just a start based on what I have seen so far this year. Complete these steps and you will save everyone a bit of grumbling in the parking lot, and you will eliminate another excuse your competition can give about why you beat them (i.e. “I would have beat you, but I was sailing your boat and it was dead slow.”) In addition to that, there is nothing more satisfying than being the proud owner of a beautiful, if elderly, yacht. Remember, “Don’t You Sail No Ugly Boat!”

Saturday: Conditions proved to be absolutely perfect at Lake MacBride with temperatures hovering around 80-85 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. We were blessed with great northeasterly wind starting around 10 mph and building throughout the day to 15 mph. There were no protests or breakdowns filed on either Saturday or Sunday although one FJ sustained minor damage in a collision and another lost its mast after a pin failed in its side stay no one was hurt and the boat was re-rigged and raced again. Windward-leeward, triangle, and modified Olympic courses were sailed.
Sunday: Tired racers were greeted by 25 mph winds with gusts up to 40 mph out of the south and cooler temperatures. 'A' fleet was able to finish 2 triangle course races with numerous capsizes. After a disastrous rotation with capsized, boats drifting into the rocks and racers too tired to right their boats, race committee cancelled competition for the remainder of the day.

FRIDAY - Racing began Friday afternoon after a morning of practice. Three races were held in light 4-7 knot breezes that shifted from E to SSW during the day. Seven more races are scheduled over the weekend.
SATURDAY - Four more races were held in 8-12 knot southerly breezes that got very light in the last two legs of the final race. URI dominated the day's sailing to move back into contention.
Sunday - Two races were held in 5-7 knot SE breeze. URI continued their streak of firsts to win a tie-breaker over Navy with Cal Maritime only one point behind. The top three places were still up for grabs on the final lap of the final race.

Congratulations to the University of Wisconsin and Michigan State University who will represent the MCSA at the 2004 ICSA North American Women's Dinghy Championship.
Saturday, nine races in each division were sailed in Notre Dame's 420s to complete a rotation. Courses were windward/leewards and modified olympics. Winds were 5-10 knots from the NE, shifting E and building throughout the day. Two protests were filed, with one withdrawn and another resulting in a DSQ. Iowa was penalized 20 pts per division for failing to sign their RP form. A special thanks to our Judges, George Griswold and Allan Teske. Also to Diamond Lake Yacht Club for the use of their facilities.

Report from the Board and ND Regatta
Alex Symes
This weekend I spent at Diamond Lake at the MCSA Women's Championships. At this event, the Executive Committee (the board) held our third meeting of this year. Some things discussed were:
Northwestern is missing money from Midwinter's. If you have not paid, please pay them immediately.
New Committees: Competition Development Committee Headed by Brent Ostbye and a By-laws committee headed by Paul Kobs and George Griswold have been established.
There is some list-serv news. Effective soon, the list serve will be fully monitored by the Graduate Secretary. It will only be used for NORs, Results, and Official notices (so this email will no longer be sent out on it).
In other Internet News, our new website is almost Complete. I have seen it and let me tell you, It is wicked sweet, I am excited to have it up on the web.
In addition, the Policy Handbook review Committee has re-done the Policy Handbook for clarification and modernization. It is now much shorter and should be complete by the end of summer. All they have left to complete is formatting and approval from the Executive Committee. So you will need to be familiar with it for September.
In Regatta news. Women's Champs went smoothly and on time, Races were run with Notre Dames brand new fleet of 420s. As reported by Regatta organizers, every team arrived with full regatta dues in hand and there was no chasing of any team Saturday for money. Races began promptly at 9:30 without delay! -- Notre Dame really ran a fantastic regatta. I have not heard from the BYOB, but knowing OU, I am positive it was a good time that I am sorry I missed.
Next weekend is Dinghy Championships and good luck to those teams racing. I will leave you with my challenges that I laid out last week (these were fully met by I everyone at ND).
To Regatta Hosts:
l) Arrive on-time and be organized and ready for racing.
To Teams:
1) Arrive at the regatta on time and have everything organized
2) Pay Friday night all at once!
Congratulations to Wisconsin and Michigan State, placing 1st and 2nd.

Saturday: The day began with a 10-15 knot northwesterly breeze. Around noon the wind shifted to a 14-20+ knot northerly. The strong breeze caused many capsizes and provided some entertainment for teams on shore.
Sunday: The first two B division races were completed in a dying northerly, which gave way to a 10-12 knot southerly. Great day for sailing!
