Traveling out of district can be a great experience, but in a district comprised entirely of club teams, we all know how difficult it can be to finance these trips. One way to alleviate the costs of going to these distant regattas is to utilize the network of MCSA alumni that have been transplanted across the country as graduates.
This past season Northwestern Universitys Sailing Team was able to do just that by getting in touch with Ohio University alumni Shannon Bonds. Shannon, who was Race Chair and Vice Commodore for the MCSA in the past, is now living in downtown San Francisco. Northwestern was in the Bay Area two times this spring, once for the McIntyre Trophy Team Race at Stanford and again for the St. Francis Yacht Club Invitational Regatta. Both times NU was able to have a free and comfortable stay with Shannon who was even kind enough to be their chauffeur and let them play with her dog Ace.
How do you make this work for more teams? you may ask. Well, whether you are a freshman just starting out, a senior ready to graduate, or an MCSA alumni, watch out for your fellow MCSAers. Keep in touch with the MCSA after your graduate and keep an eye out for teams who might be visiting your area. Communicate with your former team and encourage them to compete in your neck of the woods. By opening the lines of communication with alumni, we can make traveling out of district cheaper, easier, and more fun for everyone.

Held on Lake Snowden. Captain's Log, Saturday: Competitors awoke to gorgeous weather, with clear skies and a temperature in the high 70's. Winds ranged anywhere from 0-5 knots but due to excellent sailors and race committee a whole rotation of 7 races per division was completed. Captain's Log, Sunday: Teams awoke to another beautiful day, both warm and sunny. Alas the wind did not cooperate in our attempt to complete a double rotation, and after a short postponement races where cancelled for the day at 11 a.m. to allow teams to get on the road. Awards were given for the top 3 teams overall.

April 23-24, 2005
Strong winds and snow greeted the MCSA women at Notre Dame this weekend. Saturday winds were NNW 20-30. 7A-division and 6 B-division races were sailed before races were called off due to the conditions. Courses were modified triangles, modified windward-leewards, and modified olympics. 1 protest was heard. Sunday winds were NNW 15-25 and sailors had to shovel snow off the docks to launch their boats. 1 B-division race was sailed to complete the rotation. The course was a modified triangle.
Congratulations to the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota for qualifying for the ICSA Womens NA's.
Many thanks to George Griswold and Jerry Thomas for judging the regatta. Notre Dame would also like to thank Diamond Lake YC for allowing them to host this regatta for the second straight year.

Motivation
Cate Muller
I want to discuss motivation. Over the past few weeks I have personally gotten a much better idea of motivation when it comes to a team. I grew up in junior sailing program. It is safe to say that everyone on my team was very self-driven, we always wanted to be better, we wanted to conquer the Midwest and beyond, and many of us did. When I went to college, the same type of very self-motivated people who wanted to win, plain and simple, surrounded me. I have never known anything else till now.
Now sailing in the MCSA, I am hearing and seeing on my own team and in talking with others, the dilemma of wanting to just go sailing, and wanting to win regattas. I have become a little stumped as to how to deal with this situation. I wish I could tell you all that there is an easy solution to this problem, but I really dont think that there is. The best solution is to instill in your upcoming sailors that college sailing is not just about cruising around and having fun. College sailing is an opportunity to expand your self as a person and as a sailor. This can be achieved is by putting forth the effort, in both preparation and on the water. The more you put into sailing, the more you get out of it. Keep in mind that college sailing, more than any other form of sailing, is truly a team effort, and when you as an individual put in work, your whole team will gain from it.
It is hard for every team to deal with people who are perhaps not as driven as others. It is up to the leaders of teams to help inspire those who are less driven. You must remember you are part of a team, and although you may be new, you can have a huge impact on your team. Teams are only as strong as their weakest member. Everyone on a team must put forth the same effort for any team to achieve. Whether you are the new kid on the block, or weathered old salt, everything you do will affect your entire team. The more you put into it the more everyone will get out of it and the greater success you will find both as an individual and as a team.
