Michigan State Wins Intrepid Trophy Regatta US Naval Academy April 7-8, 2007
Sunday's conclusion of the Intrepid Trophy Regatta of match racing in Colgate 26's featured a rerun of Saturday's wind/weather and wind chill. The conditions included 15-25 knot winds from the west northwest with huge shifts and puffs.
The RC executed four flights of 6 matches each to complete a full round robin for the 12 teams entered.
It became apparent during Saturday's racing that Michigan State and Navy were the teams to beat and it was through fate that they would not face off until the final flight in what turned out to be a showdown for the championship. In that race, both teams dueled to an even start with Navy gaining the upper hand on the first beat. Michigan State rounded the first weather mark less than a length back, jibed inside and worked over the top of Navy down the run. Navy was first to jibe but could not hold Michigan State from obtaining an overlap at the first leeward mark. Michigan State matched Navy tack for tack upwind and although Navy got close on a couple of shifts, they could not regain the lead. Michigan State held on to win the match and by virtue of their win over Navy, the tie breaker to take the regatta, both teams at 10 wins to 1 loss.
Maine Maritime recovered from a tough first few races, beating Michigan to win the tiebreaker for third.
All teams rapidly became more fluent at match race strategy and tactics and the final few flights of racing saw close matches between all schools.
With the help of Dobbs Davis, Chief Ump Buscemi led competitor debriefs after racing both days providing all competitors with their expert insights and perspective which significantly boosted everyone's understanding of the game.

April Fool's Regatta Miami University 3/31/2007 - 4/1/2007
18 boats on the line was a spectacular site for another great regatta at Miami U. Saturday started off great mid 70s overcast and a little rain but unfortunately no wind. We were only able to get through the first 2 races of As before racing was called for the day. Both races were windward leeward, once around. no breakdowns and no protests.
Sunday was a much better day. Mid 70s, clear skies, and wind. It started off light and very shifty, then steadily grew stronger and eventually settled on a southwest heading. Four races were sailed in As and 6 in Bs. Racing ended at 1pm again no protests and no breakdowns

Saturday was cold and windy, with winds in the 20s, heavy puffs, and the temperature around freezing. One rotation was sailed before racing was cancelled for the day due to hypothermia risk. Multiple boats capsized in 3 of the 4 races and the boats were packed in near whiteout conditions. Sundays winds were calmer, around 15 mph and it was slightly warmer with temperatures in the upper 30s. One rotation was sailed before sailing was called due to the departure of the crash boat. The course for both days was a Windward-Leeward, once around. No protests or breakdowns were filed. Many thanks go out to Steve and John Bauer for providing the crash boat, Ben Mercer for the Committee boat, and Karl Felger and Quantum Sails Toledo for their help and support.

Saturday was between 28 and 33 degrees and cloudy with wind speeds between 12-15mph with gusts up to 18 mph. Sunday was partly cloudy with wind speeds between 5-12 mph. Courses were windward-leeward. A total of 10 races were sailed. During the six races sailed on Saturday, sailors suffered from the freezing cold weather and boats iced over after every race.
Sunday, the temperature rose up to 40 degrees, the winds were variable and shifty. No protests were filed for the entire weekend. Thank you to the teams for putting up with the little kinks that came with a mainly new team of sailors.

Racing on Saturday morning was met with sunny skies and warm temperatures, but little to no wind. For probably the first time ever, races were postponed Saturday morning because the lake refroze overnight. A thin layer of ice covered the middle of the bay. The Race Committee worked all morning to break it up. Lunch of Chipolte burritos and cookies was served before any racing commenced. The wind picked up and the ice chunks went away. 6 A races and 4 B races were sailed. Courses were windward/leeward 1 and 1 1/2 with winds 0-10 mph. One breakdown was filed and denied.
Sunday was a mirror image of Saturday morning; sunny skies and warm temperatures, but little wind. The lake refroze again during the night, but went away before the boats launched. Racing was postponed for a brief time due to lack of wind. Courses were windward/leeward 1 and 1 1/2 with winds 0-10. 1 A race and 3 B races were sailed. Lunch of hamburgers, hotdogs, Ebert and Gerberts subs, chips and guacamole from Chipolte was served. A raffle with great prizes including a rigging knife, Extrasport Life Jackets, Subway and Starbucks gift cards and backpacks were held after the racing was complete.
THANK YOU to PRO Paul Kobs and Mrs. PRO Alison Kobs, Mark Dunsworth on crash boat, Hans Zinn for the spectator boat, Mr. and Mrs. Kramer for the breakfast beverages and coffee pots, Bev Haverstock for her supreme grilling skills, the judges - Ross Siemers, Kevin Kenny and Bruce Martinson, all of the food donations - Subway, Chipotle, Erbert and Gerberts and Bruggers & Bagels, the companies who donated raffle prizes, Kelly Nichols on scoring and putting up with Navy Scoring (eventually using UF scoring program) and all of the sailors who drove a really long way to make it to Minnesota.

Buckeye Intersectional Ohio State University April 14-15, 2007
The Buckeye Intersectional Regatta had plenty of wind, but with that came plenty of rain and sleet on Saturday and temperatures in the low 40's for both days. Saturday saw a shifty easterly breeze of 5-10 knots eventually turning into a NNE at about 10-15 knots. The rain came during the second rotation and would later turn into sleet (all the better to hide the tears). The rain may have drenched the competitors but it did not dampen their spirits as they completed 12 races on the day. All the courses sailed were windward-leeward with a mix of one or two laps.
Sunday brought a reprieve from the rain/sleet, but brought with it much tougher sailing conditions. The skies were overcast and the breeze was a hefty 15-25 out of the north producing a rarely seen 1-2 ft. chop on Hoover Reservoir. The courses were again windward-leeward twice around for a total of 4 races on the day. Very few competitors managed to make it through the day without facing some turmoil, either in the form of a breakdown, swamping, or capsize. A few of the boats faced the consequences of the demanding conditions including a fallen mast, but all the competitors returned safe and sound. Awards were handed out to the top 3 teams in A and B and to the top team overall.
Congratulations to Vermont, who made their long journey worthwhile by winning the Inaugural Buckeye Intersectional Regatta Perpetual Trophy (thanks to the infamous George Griswold's immaculate craftsmanship).

Buckeye Invitational Ohio State University April 14-15, 2007
The Buckeye Invitational Regatta featured a variety of challenging weather conditions from shifty breeze to rain and sleet. Saturday brought temperatures in the low 40's with a moderate (5-10) easterly breeze that was nearly constantly shifting. As the day wore on, the rain came and along with it the breeze began to build to a steady 10-15 out of the NNE. A total of 12 races were sailed on windward-leeward courses, with the last couple sailed in sleet. Despite a few capsizes and breakdowns, all the competitors returned dampened but intact and in true sailing spirit all issues were settled on the water as no protests were filed.
Sunday was like a game of bowling. A robust northerly breeze of 15-25 created a howl not unlike the racket in a bowling ally. Puffs approaching 30 later in the day were like a bowler wielding his weapon of choice, the 16-pound ball. The heavens knocked down boats like Parker Bohn III sending pins toppling down a lane. Unlike the smooth lanes in an alley Hoover Reservoir kicked up a rarely seen 1-2 ft chop. An attempt was made to get races in, but the powers that be persistently toppled competitors picking up at least one spare in the hour they tried to sail. True to the actual game of bowling no one in the heavens was able to knock down the 7 - 10 split (this is mostly because those two boats didn't even go out). Because all the competitors had either swamped, capsized, or otherwise fallen to pieces races were abandoned without any being completed for the day.
Awards were handed out to the top 3 A and B teams as well as the top team overall. Congratulations to the Western Michigan 3 team for winning the Buckeye Invitational Regatta.

Saturday morning things started off slow due to a lack of wind. Around 11:00 the winds started to build and racing began for the weekend. Conditions included clear sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 60s. Wind on Saturday built as the day went on and was blowing 2-6 out of the SE-S-SW over the course of the day. 8 A division and 8 B division races were sailed on Saturday. Courses were Triangle windward/Leewards. One protest was filed.
Sunday morning the winds were blowing and the sun was shining. 6 more A division races and 6 more B division races were sailed. The wind was a consistent breeze blowing 8-12 out of the south/southwest. Courses were triangle windward/leewards and triangle windward/leeward/windward/leewards.
Many thanks to our judges George Griswold, Ed Theisen, and Dan van Heeckeren for spending their days with us. Thank you also to Diamond Lake Yacht Club once again for allowing us the use of their facilities to host the regatta.

Wet Your Willie Northwestern University, April 21st-22nd, 2007
This was the first warm weekend of spring with some great sailing. On Saturday, 16 boats set out on to Lake Michigan around 10 a.m., starting to sail in 3-5 knots of wind consistently from of the south.
By noon the wind had built to between 5-8, before returning to 3-5 at 4 pm Racing concluded at 5:15 on Saturday after the sailors had completed six windward-leeward races in each fleet and had enjoyed a solid day of sun.
On Sunday, the sun shone down on the course, but the wind had picked up to 10-12 knots out of the Southwest. It continued to build throughout the morning to a solid 15 knots, as the sailors followed two races of a Modified Olympic Course (triangle, windward-leeward.) in each fleet. By 1 p.m., the wind was beginning to blow hard, so the regatta was called. Twenty minutes after sailors left the lake, the winds were gusting over 21 knots, so they were happy to be on shore in the 85-degree heat.
Throughout the regatta, there were 4 breakdowns filled, 1 of which was disallowed. There were no protests.
Thanks to our PRO Dick Schweers, judges Dennis Bartley and Clark Pollet, and Sheridan Shores Yacht Club.

Dinghy Champs University of Wisconsin April 28th and 29th
Races started Saturday morning in full sun and a 7-10 mph west wind. The wind continued to build and shift to the NW throughout the morning reaching 15-20 mph by 1 pm. The temperature was a pleasant 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Eight A division and eight B division races were sailed. The courses were triangle windward/leewards. One redress hearing was held on Saturday.
On Sunday races were postponed until 10:30 due to lack of wind. The breeze shifted South and filled in nicely at 10:45 am. There were three races sailed in each division to finish the rotation. Windward-Leeward courses were sailed in a shifty and puffy SSW breeze at 5-15 mph. There was one protest hearing.
Thank you to our Judges, Warren Wong, Don Glasell, and Andy Kiener. Also thanks to our Race Committee, Dave Schmidt and Paul Bargren.
