80th Boston Dinghy Cup
Harvard/MIT
March 28-29, 2009
Saturday: The 80th Boston Dinghy Club Cup started late with a light easterly in the morning, building to 6-8 knots and becoming more south-easterly in the early afternoon. At about 3pm, fog rolled in, breeze increased to about 10-12 knots and temps dropped into the 40's.
PRO's Franny Charles (MIT) and Mike O'Conner (Harvard) were assisted by BU Sailing Team volunteers and scorers. Judges Greg Kielty, John Pratt, Kerry Sullivan, and Leo Berendes judged on the water and heard 3 protests, resulting in 2 DSQ's and 1 RAF.
Sunday: Wind was northeasterly at 12-14 knots in the morning, ultimately dying to 3-5 knots and swinging north for the last few races with rain all day. 17 races were sailed in each Division. Boats: FJ

April Fools Regatta 2009
Miami University
April 4-5, 2009
Sailing began and ended on Saturday with the completion of 9 races per division. The weather was cold during the morning but warmed up quickly and the wind was steady at around 10 -15 knots. There were two counts of breakdown as two separate boats had sidestays fail and lost their rigs. Everyone was in good spirits through the weekend and it proved to be a relaxing one as is common place at Miami. Special thanks to the Brookville Lake Sailing Association who lent us their committee boat and services as race committee for the day. Thank you to all who came out and sailed or watched.

Ferrarone Team Race Intersectional
Hosted by Yale at the McNay Family Sailing Center
April 4-5, 2009
Saturday: The breeze started out strong, but continued to build as the day went on. The wind came from the West. The teams had a tough time keeping stable combinations because of the multiple puffs and shifts. As the day went on, large, rolling waves swept in from Long Island Sound. In the morning, the normal breeze was 15 knots with puffs to 20. That was just the start of the carnage, though, with numerous boats flipping before the sequence, during the sequence, at the start, on the legs, at the mark roundings and even right at and after the finish line. The wind contined to build, with the highest recorded puff clocked at 35 knots. It was not uncommon for boats to be flogging both the main and jib and fully hiked and occasionally capsizing to windward. By the end of the day, there more than 30 capsizes had occurred. In all, 45 races were sailed, with three protests filed. Two protests were disallowed the other resulted in a disqualification for Boston College.
Sunday: The day started off with a Gold round robin with the top six teams from Saturday. The day was a bit calmer, with winds that started from the Northwest. There were no capsizes. The wind was very shifty and puffy. Boats: 420s Judge: Jamie Ewing '99 RC: Bill Healy and Yale Undergrads First Round Robin Results

Buckeye Intersectional
Ohio State at Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland, Ohio
April 11-12, 2009
Saturday: Lake Erie was very uncooperative; supplying 20 knot winds gustingto 27 out of the North with swells up to 5 feet. A deliciously warm breakfast and lunch got the full attention of all sailors, as races were first postponed until 12:00, then until 2:00. Faced with no abatement of wind or waves and the idea of pulling sailors from the 35-degree water, race committee decided at 2:00 to cancel all sailing for the day. Temperatures in the low to mid 40's.
Sunday: In Cleveland fashion, Sunday's weather was world apart from the previous day's. With sunny skies and a very pleasant 10 knots from the Northeast, it was a great day of sailing. The Intersectional finished strong, managing to fit in 5 races per division. Temperatures in the mid 40's.

Small Keelboat Scrimmage
U.S. Naval Academy
April 18-19, 2009
The weekend served up ideal conditions both days for our Spring Keelboat Regatta held at the US Naval Academy aboard our Colgate 26s.
Ten teams competed and 10 races were completed. The first few races Saturday were run in a dying northerly before shifting around to a shifty southerly sea breeze. In all a total of 7 races were completed Saturday with the crews from Hobart William Smith and Cornell dominating the top 2 spots all day. The remaining teams bounced all over the scoreboard in the tricky conditions.
After a short postponement Sunday morning, the breeze filled in from the east and the final three races were completed. HWS took an I flag in race 1 for their worst score of the regatta (3rd) and finished with 16 points. Cornell maintained their consistent form to take 2nd while the freshman crew from Navy came on strong to capture 3rd overall.
Special thanks to PRO LT Joe McGettigan?, volunteer Frieda Wildey and their team of Midshipmen who ran the races and also to Joan and Dick Morin and their BBQ crew for the tasty post-race burgers and dogs following Saturday's racing. Boats: Colgate 26 (crew of 4)

MCSA Women's Championship
Northwestern University
4/25-26, 2009
Saturday: Sailors found themselves faced with a day of very unlucky weather at Sheridan Shore Yacht Club on Lake Michigan. Races in the morning were blown out with winds around 25-30 knots with frequent gusts up to 40! The A team completed one race before the race was postponed for a first time and one more race after a second postponement. At our first attempt to get the B sailors going, we were greeted with thunder and lightening that lasted most of the rest of the afternoon, preventing the B fleet from completing any races.
Sunday: Scattered thunderstorms prevented any racing from being completed today despite multiple attempts to sneak in a set. Because only 2 A division races were completed over the weekend the regatta is not "official" per procedural rule 24(a). The MCSA women’s qualifier will be RESCHEDULED TO OCCUR BEFORE MAY 10TH. More information will be distributed in the next few days. Thank you to all the teams and volunteers who braved the rain, wind, and cold to try to make the event a success.

Saturday: All teams met up at the Union on Lake Mendota in the midst of torrential rain and frequent lightning. Racing was postponed until after lunch. In the afternoon, sailors pulled together to get fleet racing moving and all three divisions managed to sail 2 sets in wind about 10-15mph.
Sunday: Sailors reported to the Union on Lake Mendota. The breeze was slow at first, under 5 mph, then picked up to around 8 as all divisions sailed one set.

Intrepid Trophy Regatta
US Naval Academy
April 25-26, 2009
The NASS Race Committee managed to complete 4 additional flights to get in one complete round robin for the 2009 Intrepid Trophy Match Race Regatta at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. After a 2 hour wind (lack thereof) postponement, a light seabreeze filled and racing got underway.
When the dust settled, 3 teams finished tied at 9-2. NY Maritime won the tie breaker having beaten Maine Maritime on Saturday and narrowly beating Navy today. Navy ended up 2nd and Maine Maritime wound up 3rd.
Many thanks go out to the numerous volunteers who helped make the event a success including PRO Taran Teague and her race committee crew and Bruce Cook and his umpire crew.
;This year's event will be ISAF rated and all competing skippers will earn points and a rank in the ISAF World Match Race rankings.
