April Fools Regatta
Miami University (OH)
April 2-3, 2011
FJ’s
The April Fools Regatta was held at Acton Lake on April 2-3, 2011 with 7 teams. The races started at 10:30am on Saturday morning. The weather was cold and cloudy with a steady moderate wind. It was a cold and gusty day with lots of capsizing. The races were concluded for the day at 3pm due to strong gusts and excessive capsizing. Sunday’s races started at 11am with similar weather to the day before. The forecast called for strong winds with strong gusts so we completed the regatta with a one final rotation. After the boats were put away awards were given out. Congratulations to OSU for winning first in As, Bs and Overall.

Seven teams from five schools were present for the 2011 Big Ten Team Race at Baseline Lake. Racing started around 10:30 on Saturday morning in light to moderate winds. The races were completed according to the rotation without incident, until around 2:30, when a cloud of freezing rain passed through the area. The race between Michigan and Northwestern was completed, and the rain stopped before the next race, race 16 (of 21 in the round robin). However, the wind died during that race, forcing abandonment until 4:00. Luckily, the wind returned in time for two more races to be completed in wind building to around 15 knots.
On Sunday, only four races needed to be completed to finish the round robin, and the regatta. With a poor forecast in mind, the plan was to complete them as soon as possible. After a no wind delay, racing was finally started just before 11:00. Four races were completed in light winds. After bringing the boats in, awards were held. Michigan 1 won with an undefeated regatta, and Wisconsin, Michigan 2 and Minnesota all tied for second with a 4-2 record each. Wisconsin won the tiebreaker for second overall, Michigan 2 was third, and Minnesota finished fourth. Thank you to all the teams who attended the regatta, as well as the volunteer judges, race committee, and chefs.

Saturday started off a little chilly and cloudy, and unfortunately without wind. Although everyone was ready for the first gun at 9:30, an AP flag was put up because of the lack of wind. A little less than an hour later, we were able to start the first race for A’s and get in two quick races. B’s then headed out despite the very light breeze; however, the wind quickly died and as the AP flag went up again, everyone came off the water for lunch. After lunch, we were able to get in two B races and two more races for As before the fog quickly rolled in, stopping sailing for the day. All in all, it was a solid day of sailing despite the less-than-ideal wind conditions!
Sunday started off much warmer than Saturday had, with temperatures in the mid-80s--close to a local record. We were lucky enough to be bypassed by the thunderstorms moving through the Midwest, but had to keep an eye on the steadily increasing breeze. We started off with Bs (finishing the 2nd rotation from Saturday), with the first start at 9:30 AM. Even though the wind was steadily building, we were able to get in another full rotation for both A’s and B’s before finishing up for the weekend.
Thanks to everyone for coming! We're looking forward to seeing you next

Saturday: The wind was light and shifty causing many course changes. Only 10 races were sailed.
Sunday: The wind was from the south at 7-10. The weather was sunny with temperatures in the high 70’s. PRO Mike Vinning got the first race started after a 20 minute postponment. One request for Redress was granted when a boat was not supplied with a rudder and missed the first race. Two other protests were closed because of a failure to hail “protest.

Saturday, April 16: Racing got underway shortly after 1030 in a building west wind. Cool temps and frequent rain showers made their way across the race course all day. Shifty winds from 8-16knts kept sailors on their toes and a strong current meant many OCS's hailed at the start line. Thanks to technical support from Greg Wilkinson and Dayan Paez, race committee was able to score races live on the water using only a smart phone. 6A and 6B races were sailed before racing was called for the day. One protest was filed resulting in a DSQ.
Sunday, April 17: Sailors arrived to brisk temps, clear skies and a fresh breeze. Winds quickly built to 12-14knts with afternoon puffs in the high teens/low twenties. Sunday's breeze brought 30 degree oscillations and steep chop. 4A and 4B races were sailed before the 3pm cut-off time. Courses were modified windward-leewards. A special thanks to all the volunteers that helped with race committee this weekend; Dave Patterson, Andrew Nelson, Chris Brown, Jess Frazier, Jay McRostie? and Jack Thomas. Thanks to Steve Williams, Andrew Nelson and Chris Brown for hearing protests and to Zip 2 Water for the clean, filtered drinking water. Congrats to the University of Washington, this year's Rainier Cup winner!

Saturday was sunny and warm with constant winds blowing 15-20 and gusting up to 25. Both A and B sailed 5 races and then the regatta was postponed for 2 hours due to heavy winds. After 2 hours, the races were resumed. Racing continued until 6 pm when 10 races were completed, finishing the regatta one day early.
Congratulations to the Wisconsin team who qualified for Women's Nationals and congratulations to Michigan and Minnesota who qualified for Women's Semi-Finals. Good luck at Cascade Locks.
Thank you to the officials and to the Northwestern Sailing Team.

Saturday, April 23: Racing began at 10:00AM with a brisk westerly breeze at about 15-18mph. Racing proceeded with plenty of capsizing in all three fleets. The wind direction remained steady from the west, though after noon the breeze gradually lessened. The day ended pleasantly with winds around 12mph and much less carnage.
Sunday, April 24: No wind, no racing. Congratulations to Wisco 1 for winning the 2011 Three Division Regatta. Minnesota finished 2nd and UIC finished 3rd. We would like to thank our PRO Peter Lundt, and our much needed crash boat driver Mr. Kutschenreuter. Thank you to all teams who attended.

Saturday, April 23: Great day of sailing in the rain. The regatta started with heavy wind from the south in the morning, fell down to 0-5 in the early afternoon, and ended with steady breeze. Eight races were finished in both divisions. One redress was awarded in race 4A
Sunday, April 24: Sailors showed up to a fog covered Thames River, which cleared and gave way to the southerly around 10:15. Five great races were sailed. Thanks to everyone who helped out and all the competitors for making this a great weekend.
