Springfield Regatta
Wittenberg
March 31 - April 1, 2012
FJs
The 4th Annual Wittenberg Regatta consisted of four teams, University of Toledo, Bowling Green, Ohio University, and Wittenberg. The weather for the day was cold and damp but the wind was a solid 7 - 10 knots out of the North which made for great sailing. Toledo and Bowling Green started off strong in A Fleet, but Ohio University and Wittenberg improved throughout the day to take first and second. In the B Fleet Ohio and Wittenberg duked it out all day to finish first and second respectively. The weather on Sunday was not fit for sailing but the quality of racing on Saturday more than made up for it.

Big Ten Team Race 2012
University of Michigan
March 31st-April 1st, 2012
Saturday- Seven teams arrived on Saturday morning to about 8 knots of breeze from the NE. The morning started a little late, but with steady breeze for racing. We got 13 races off before the wind completely died and we called racing around 4pm. Michigan was leading after the first day with zero losses. No protests or breakdowns were filed.
Sunday- Sunday morning started even lighter than Saturday, with about 5 knots from the south. We completed the remaining 8 races in the round robin around noon. Then we did a playoff-like elimination where the teams in first and fourth raced each other and then the teams in second and third. The winners of the races (Michigan and Notre Dame) then raced in a final race for First with Michigan coming out on top. Notre Dame followed after Michigan in second place and Northwestern came in third. Again, no protests or breakdowns were filed. Thank you to our race committee, judges, umpires and volunteers for getting off a great regatta!

Saturday, April 7: Saturday brought great sailing conditions on Lake Macbride with east winds at 7-13 kts and temperatures of 65°F. Shifty winds and gusts made for challenging conditions on the race course as the RC ran a total of twelve races throughout the day. Sailors enjoyed an onshore lunch of cheeseburgers prepared by UISC volunteers. At the end of the day, Michigan Tech and the University of Illinois - Chicago had a comfortable lead over the rest of the fleet with Tech in the lead.
Sunday, April 8: On Sunday, sailors were greeted with warm weather and little wind. After a one hour postponement and an unfavorable forecast, the RC made the decision to abandon all further races for the day. Congratulations to Michigan Tech (overall, High B's) and UIC (High A's). Special thanks to all the UISC volunteers for making this a great event.

Saturday, April 7: Very light air, a few races were started, but all were abandoned due to a loss of wind conditions.
Sunday, April 8: 3 races were raced for A's and B's. The wind piped up finally to 10-15, and there was one redress for a broken Jib halyard, and many capsizes and turtles.

Saturday, April 7: Sailors were greeted to a nice sunny morning with temperatures in the low 60's all day. We raced on a modified windward-leeward, twice around. 8 races per division were finished before 430pm, when the wind shifted 90 degrees and died. No protests were filed. Northwestern sits in first at the end of day 1, with Michigan in second and UW-Milwaukee in third.
Sunday, April 8: Sailors arrived to another nice morning with wind around 8 knots. Race 8B was sailed and then we resumed our normal 2-race rotation with the goal of finishing the remaining 5 races per division. Halfway through the morning, wind built to 15kt with gusts and continued increasing to 20+ by the last B set. 12 races per division were completed by the end of the day. Illinois did not show for Sunday Many thanks to our race committee John Hill (PRO-Sat), Lisa Gable (PRO-Sun), and Rick Lillie for getting all our races off, and to Betsy Altman with her team of judges for standing by all weekend and holding one breakdown hearing. Northwestern was awarded average points for the front of the hiking straps coming out of the pressure plate. Congratulations to our podium of Northwestern, Michigan Wolverines, and Michigan Maize and thank you to all sailors for coming to 2012 Wet Your Willie! Many teams did not fill out regatta evaluation forms and were given RP penalties per MCSA policy.

Saturday, April 7: With a delayed report due to crew races, the fleet hit the water at 11:15. The early afternoon brought a wild northerly that brought huge shifts and auto-tacks causing three capsizes. The big shifts kept the fleet on its toes and shuffled up the deck on multiple occasions. The big shifts also led to some serious horizon jobs, most noticeably the Catamount B-division putting a 1 minute and 32 second delta on second place. The later afternoon brought an unexpected easterly with more breeze and cooler temperature. 8 races were completed in both divisions on 4 and 5 leg courses. Big thanks to Joel Hanneman, Matt Duggan, Sally Evans, and William Brown IV for dealing swift justice in the two protests filed resulting in 1 DSQ and the other being disallowed.
Sunday, April 8: Races were again delayed due to crew races. The sailors enjoyed pineapple and peeps while completing 4 races in each division. Congrats to Yale on a solid victory!

Rainier Cup

April 14-15, 2012
FJ
Saturday, April 14: Racing got underway shortly after 10am in an 8-10 knot westerly. Drier weather meant the current was less intense than last season, but certainly still a factor on the race course. The breeze continued to build through the first A/B set and was up to the high teens by the time A fleet came out for race 3/4. As B fleet took to the course, the winds began to really build and peaked in the mid to high 20's. It didn't last long though and by mid afternoon the winds had died back to 12-14 knots. 6 race were sailed in each division on a modified windward leeward course. One redress was heard resulting in breakdown points
Sunday, April 15: Sailors arrived early hoping for more of the ideal conditions from Saturday, but the gorge wasn't as kind. A battling convergence held the west winds back until after noon when a light 4-6 finally filled across the river. Racing resumed shortly before 1300 in a building 6-8 knots. Two more races were sailed in each fleet before the day was done. A huge thanks to all our volunteers and to CGRA for the amazing facilities! Congratulations to UW, this year's Rainier Cup winners

Four teams arrived on Saturday morning to 8 knots of breeze from the NE. Racing started at 11:00 am with steady breeze for racing. We completed six races and then moved to the championship rounds for the winning and losing brackets. The fourth team competing in the regatta was a composite team that consisted of members from various schools. Even though this team placed 2nd they were given last place in the regatta. Congratulations to The Ohio State University for winning the first ever Oxford Classic Team Race!

Saturday, April 21: Started off with winds ranging from 4-12 knots from the shifty South direction. Had a lunch break after 3 sets and then came back out to a building southerly with winds ranging from 15-22knots and flat water. A great afternoon for the bigger crews. We raced KP trapezoids all day and finished up with 14 races in A&B and 13 in C. Tomorrow we will start with 14C. Thanks to Bill Ward and Clinton Hayes for helping with a protest which resulted in a DSQ. Thanks to USMMA Waterfront teams for helping run the event.
Sunday, April 22: Racers were greeted with temps in the high 40s and rain for day 2 of the Admirals Cup. The wind again was perfect, ranging from 8-15 with small shifts from the NNE direction. This direction created some bigger waves and made the runs very tight. We finished the 19 team round robin and everyone was off the water by 12:45. One protest was heard resulting in a DSQ. Congratulations to College of Charleston on winning the 2012 Admirals Cup!

Saturday: Sailors and umpires arrived at Lake Mendota in Madison, WI to a cold and dreary day with rain on and off until mid afternoon and temperatures in the 40s. Breeze was about 15 mph out of theeast making for smooth rotations out of Hoofers. Courses were collegiate N's and two fleets of 420s were in rotation. The six teams did one full round robin that ended just before 1:00 PM and took a half hour break for lunch allowing the umpire crew to
warm back up. The second round robin started at 1:30 and finished around 4:00. The umpires lead a short debrief and sailors headed to their host houses.
Sunday was slightly warmer with temperatures in the 50s and breeze still from the east at about 15mph. The third and final round robin was completed with two jib windows ripping mid rotation, but otherwise smooth sailing. Wisconsin takes first with a record of 15-0, Michigan comes in second with a record of 12-3, and Northwestern third at 8-7. Both Wisconsin and Michigan receive berths to ICSA/APS Team Race Nationals in Austin.
Wisconsin would like to thank chief umpire Hans Graf, his crew, Gene Rankin, Kathy Lindgren, Mike Lindgren, Dierk Polzin, Mark Johnson, and PRO Jo Reis for all of their hard work through some uncomfortable conditions during the weekend. Also we would like to thank Sail Sheboygan, Geneva Lake Sailing School, and Jim Kutschenreuter for lending umpire boats for the event.

MCSA Commodore - Warren S. Weiant
Warren S. Weiant, MCSA Commodore served two years from 1949 - 1950 passed away on April 28th as reported by high grand daughter Leslie Weiant. He was an avid Ohio State fan. He also maintained a continuing interest I collegiate sailing, participating in the 2003 Afterguard regatta in Detroit and attend last years Ohio State Buckeye Intersectional. It was Warrens guidance that helped the MCSA get through its formative years where many of the practices that are followed today were established.
