MCSA Singlehanded Championships
Northwestern University
September 28-29, 2002
The MCSA Men's Singlehanded Championship and Women's Singlehanded Championship were sailed at Northwestern, alternating one fleet of Lasers between the competitors in each regatta. The start of the regatta was delayed due to conditions that made it unsafe to leave the beach until Saturday afternoon. There were three to four foot waves being pushed by an easterly wind breaking over a sandbar just offshore. The waves finally subsided to permit safe passage. Unfortunately, the wind also decreased making difficult sailing in the choppy water.
Five requests for redress were made. Two were withdrawn when the Race Committee discovered an error and corrected it. In one case the finishing position could not be determined and the competitor was granted an average of his scores in the other races for that race. In another case, one Wisconsin skipper protested another for a Rule 2 violation, and was seeking redress. It was found that Rule 2 was not violated and that redress should not be awarded. Another Wisconsin skipper requested redress for the last three races claiming that scoring errors could have affected his position in the regatta. It was determined that his finishing positions in each of the races were not materially prejudiced and the request was not granted.
The Benefactor's Trophy was awarded to Tim Krech of Minnesota. The Katherine A. Fellows Trophy was awarded to Anne Porter of Wisconsin.

Website Committee at Work
Bryon Thornburgh
The month of October has been a very busy month for the Website Committee. We have been working on a new website and we are actually making very good progress! I encourage everyone to send me suggestions for the new site. Are there content related issues with the current site that you would like to see different in the new site? Is there anything you feel should be on the web site that isn't? Drop me an e-mail (bryon@thomburgh.org) with your thoughts.
As I was adding our newest team, IUPUI, to our list of members on the website, I couldn't help but notice that nineteen of twenty-six teams in the district have team websites! I would like to encourage those teams that don't have a website to consider creating one. It would be great if every team in the district had a website by Midwinters! If you need some help getting started please let me know, as I may be able to point you in the right direction. Team websites are a great recruiting tool as well as a great communication tool with alumni, current team members and the school.
Cary-Price Memorial Intersectional
University of Michigan
October 5-6, 2002
The 2002 Cary-Price Memorial Trophy Intersectional was held at Bayview Yacht Club on the Detroit River. The out of district teams included Queens, Hobart & William Smith, Dartmouth, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Races were held in 420's loaned to Michigan by Bayview Yacht Club and Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Nearly perfect conditions on Saturday and great work by the Race Committee allowed us to get 14 races completed that day, with square courses and good breeze. Sunday started with a B rotation, and 6 races were sailed in a stronger South breeze. By the end of the day, winds were gusting into the 17-18 knot range, causing a few capsizes. Technical difficulties caused the regatta to be called after 20 total races (10A and 10B) but all teams were very satisfied with the weekend. Courses used were Triangle, Modified Olympic and Windward-Leeward. The regatta proved a great learning experience for all those unfamiliar with sailing in current (it ranged as high as 4 knots), as Bayview YC will be the sailing venue for the 2003 Coed North Americans.
In Race 2A, Dartmouth was scored DSQ for violating Rule 18.2(c) against Hobart & William Smith. In Race 9A, Marquette was DSQ for violating Rules 11 and 14 against Wisconsin. In Race 9A, Dartmouth was DSQ for violating Rule 13 against Wisconsin. In Race 10A Tennessee was granted Breakdown Points for a bent rudder pin. In Race 10B Dartmouth was awarded Breakdown Points for a mast step problem.
The University of Michigan Sailing Team would like to thank all those who came out and helped at the regatta, especially the Judges - George Griswold, John Schuch, and Art Le Vasseur, and Race Committee of Commodore Tim Rumptz (PRO), Dan Fires, Catherine Fires, Brad Tooman, Dan Padilla, and Dan Klaasen who came out and did an awesome job. They were assisted by Craig Capilla, David Elwood, Ellen Padilla, Katie Kaltz and Chris Metcalf of the University of Michigan Sailing Team.

Thread Bear Regatta
Washington University
October 5-6, 2002
The 2002 Thread Bear Regatta rolled out of bed on time thanks to Sergei Lie, but equipment failures caused the first warning to be delayed until 1030. With the help of Gerald Donaldson, and Cliff Flath, of the Carlyle Sailing Association a charged marine battery was found and we got out on the water as quickly as possible. Also thanks to John and Peg Woodworth for providing marks and other race management equipment.
Eight teams from seven schools attended, including Guest school, University of Missouri-Rolla. The conditions on Carlyle Lake, Illinois, on Saturday were less than desirable, with a shifty 5 mph breeze from the NE slowly fading as the day progressed. Two races were sailed in each division, all windward-leewards. By 1430 the races were postponed.
First warning was at 0940 on Sunday, and 5 races were completed in each division in a storm generated breeze from a building SW wind that persisted to shift south. The first set was sailed in 10 mph wind with a light rain. Gradually the wind speed increased to 15 with gusts almost to 20 mph. The races were W-L. Many boats capsized and turtled. We recruited more CSA members to help with safety and mark set duties.
Thanks to all of the teams who towed boats and brought suits of sails to make this event possible.
Graduate Secretary notes: Races 7A and 7B are discarded because boats were not rotated to sail them. ICSA Procedural Rules state that no more than 2 races in a row may be sailed in one boat. Ohio State DSQ in 5B and 6B for switching a sailor from one squad to another.

Scheduling C & D Divisions
The Executive Board voted to encourage schools to add C and/or D Divisions to currently scheduled regattas. There is growing interest in Laser sailing and by adding the additional divisions to next year's regattas schools could get more sailors on the water and get more practice in Lasers and Laser Radials. Schools are warned to consider the impact on their need to provide housing, food, awards, safety boats, and other hosting items.
Cedarfest Regatta
Michigan State University hosted the annual Cedarfest Regatta on October 12-13. A total of 10 colleges and universities traveled to the Michigan State University Sailing Center on Lake Lansing for the event. Saturday began extremely foggy, though the fog began to lift around 0915 and boats started heading out for the first race at 0940. The wind peaked around 7 knots mid-day from the southwest, then shifted 30 degrees to the southeast by the afternoon. Saturday afternoon was partly cloudy and the temperature reached 70 degrees. A division was able to complete 10 races and B division 8 races. Sunday reached 46 degrees with a northwest wind at 10 knots. B division started the day, racing. All courses were modified Windward-Leeward.
We would like to thank Mike Moody and the Lansing Sailing Club for serving as our Race Committee. Also, we would like to thank George Griswold, Sidney Mook, and Joe Tenbusch for serving as Protest Committee (though no protests were made!}

WRAPPIN' IT UP WITH STYLE
Katie Triplett
The leaves are changing, the weather is getting colder, and everyone's pulling out their drysuits. Ah, my favorite time of year! As we are approaching the end of our fall season, I recommend that it is time for a celebration! Here are just a few ideas to think about:
- Have everyone collect their weekend photos and have a picture party to exchange pictures from past regattas.
- Get everyone together to discuss the pro's and con's of each regatta and use those suggestions to plan a regatta for your own school.
- Consider hosting a Winter Bash for all the teams to reunite for a weekend of Boat racing on the ice.
- Have your team get together to drink hot chocolate and watch the classic movie, Wind.
- Plan a weekend for your team to volunteer throughout the community
- As the weekends get less busy, more time can be spent on achieving team goals. This is a great time to look for sponsors, recruit new sailors for the Spring, and search for boats to purchase.
VERY IMPORTANT: Because the MCSA will be hosting the 2003 National Championships this year, I would love to encourage EVERYONE to attempt to gain more publicity for their team. Not only can you talk to the school paper, but also try the local newspaper in your area. Contact radio and television stations and invite them to practices. Inform them of the MCSA and be sure to include the web site they can visit for more information. www.mcsasail.org I am eager to work with any team that needs help or has questions on this matter. Good luck to you all!

Women's Singlehanded Championship & Keelboat Competition
Tom Martin
As this fall season comes to a close, there are a couple of issues that need to be addressed in the areas of women's singlehanded sailing and in keelboat sailing. During the Executive Board's meeting at Indiana on October 19th, the Board approved the change to Laser radial rigs for the MCSA Women's Singlehanded Championship next fall. This means that all teams need to start finding radial rigs. I suggest talking with the women sailors on your team that are planning on sailing singlehandeds next fall to see if they own a radial rig. If they don't, and you should see fit, it is in the team's best interest to purchase a radial rig. Or you could contact yacht clubs in the area with Lasers to see if they would be willing to let you rent or borrow radial rigs from them. The reason I am mentioning this issue now instead of closer to next fall is because we really need to have an accurate count of how many radial rigs are available to make the scheduling for this event go smoothly. Teams should have an idea about how many women want to go to this event and have radial rigs when they come to the scheduling meeting at Midwinters.
JESUIT SCHOOL INVITATIONAL
The event was hosted by the Fordham University Sailing Team at
Morris Yacht & Beach Club, City Island, Bronx, NY,
Oct. 12-13,2002.
The JESUIT ANNUAL SAILING REGATTA was held from 1955-1971. When the Fordham Afterguard resurrected the Sailing program at Fordham in 2000, one of their first goals was the rebirth of the Jesuit Regatta. In the summer of 2002, FORDHAM magazine, an alumni quarterly mentioned that the JESUIT SCHOOL INVITATIONAL would be scheduled in October. An alumnus of the Class of 1975 said he had the original Jesuit Cup in his attic. It will be inscribed with the name of the annual winner and kept on display at the Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center on Fordham's Rose Hill campus. The event took place with teams from John Carroll, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Fordham and Providence. Boston College, Loyola and Marquette Xavier?? were unable to attend this initial reunion but promised to send teams next year.
On Saturday, racing took place in Fordham's fleet of 420s, on Eastchester Bay, on the leeward side of a ferocious northeast wind hitting City Island. A course was set as close to shore as possible. A hundred yards away in Long Island Sound, we could see three to four foot rollers and nothing but whitecaps. Winds were clocked at 14-19 knots. Gusts were in the mid-twenties and one registered 29 knots. With three capsizes, the two races were completed and two B Division races were attempted, but the wind had increased and racing was postponed for a couple of hours. At noon, two more A division races were successfully held. On Sunday, a light, northeast breeze in the 2-6 knot range challenged the sailors in the other extreme. A total of 10 races in each division were run before the winds died entirely in mid-afternoon and the regatta concluded.

2002 Harken Clinic
University of Wisconsin
September 14-15,2002
The Clinic featured Intermediate Sailors in 30 Tech Dinghies in A Division and Advanced Sailors in 14 420s in B Division. The racing was on Saturday for practice and assessment, but provides a listing of up and coming sailors for the MCSA's future. The two days of drills and instruction were highly beneficial to the entire group attending. Harken provided lunch to the participants on Saturday. The new Harken 420 Skills CD was utilized for the instruction and four schools won copies in a drawing. The turnout by the MCSA was wonderful. A large thanks goes out to Harken for spearheading the idea for the Clinic. The Intermediate Coaches were Bret Liebmann (Green Bay/Wisconsin '95) and Kelly Reese (Miami '01). The Advanced Coaches were Bill Uniack (Boston Univ. '98) and Bill Goggins (Marquette '96). Participants reported universally that in spite of the wide range of skill levels that they all came away with new skills and that they were looking forward to taking what they learned back to their teams to spread it and practice it at home. Saturday was warm with winds North 0-5. Sunday was also warm, with winds North 5-20. John Porter was overall chairman with Tom McGrath's help.
