October 4-5, 2003
Saturday: It was an unusually windy day on Baseline Lake with westerly winds gusting to 15 knots and averaging around 8-10 through most of the day. Winds were consistently oscillating throughout the day. Racing was tight between the 8 of the 11 scheduled teams that showed up. 10 races were sailed for each fleet of 420s. Courses were modified triangles or modified Olympics. 2 protests were filed as well as one request for redress.
Sunday: The day started off frosty and cold with no wind. Around 10:30 the wind built to 3-7 from the northwest. 3 races per division were sailed in shifty and puffy conditions. All races were Gold Cup courses. Wisconsin made a charge at the end of the day to overtake Minnesota for the lead. 5 protests were filed for 4 separate incidents. University of Michigan Sophomore Matt Vanderpool with his crews Dan Martinez and Dave Elwood won A division in tight competition between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Congratulations to Wisconsin on winning their first Cary-Price Intersectional. Thanks to all of the Michigan Sailing Team members who helped out running this event!

Saturday: 10 Races sailed in 5-12 knots of shifty northeasterly wind. Port triangles with one redress given, one yellow flag, and no protests. The Annnapolis boat show provided us with plenty of chop and the fickle wind let the girls practice their auto-tacking.
Sunday: 5 Races completed in 5-10 knot steady Northerly winds.

Looking to next year...
Tom McGrath
If you've been a good member of the MCSA, you've noticed that it is time to get your scheduling in order for your team for next year. This is not to say that you should just approve a regatta for your homecoming weekend or parents weekend. Believe it or not, universities actually plan for stuff like this in advance and you can too! Don't be that team that makes it difficult on everyone in terms of finding a hotel to crash at (if housing is not available). It takes no time at all to find your school's future event schedule (probably online) and you will save the teams coming to your event more time and effort than you spent on finding a good weekend for your event. I would encourage the hosts that have held the qualifiers to continue on their course of providing their facilities for quality events, but I would encourage others that have the resources to put in a bid to host one of these events. There should be an application process in full swing as I write this.
As a quick note, please make sure that you get your regatta rankings forms into me. You can find this form on the MCSA site under the Awards link. Without the members filling out this form, it is very difficult to get a "Best Regatta Award" handed out. Drop me a line for more compelling information if you would like.
47th White Trophy Regatta
Hosted by MIT @ Cottage Park Y.C. Winthrop. MA
October 11-12,2003
Twelve teams competed in the venerable Olympic Star boat for the White Trophy and the two berths allocated to New England for the North American Sloop Championships at SUNY Maritime in November. Three races were sailed in a beautiful 8-12 knot northeasterly under partly sunny /foggy skies with temps in the low 60s. All sailors showed impressive boat-handling and sail tuning techniques and everyone had a blast sailing the 20' beast. The racing was very tight around the one Nautical mile beats (courses were W /L twice around). There were two filings for breakdown redress (both broken forestays --granted) and one denied redress for an OCS. No other protests were filed and no major boat damage occurred. Day two saw a puffy 10-15 knot northeast wind with extremely tight mark roundings, despite the one nautical mile first beats. All the teams improved throughout the series and handled the 15 knot puffs with ease ( except for the finish of the final race which saw BC lose their rig one boat-length from the finish and Conn. College lose their crew overboard). The weather was ridiculously awful.

October 11-12 2003
The fog lifted just in time to let a little breeze float over the lake before racing began on Lake Lansing. Winds slowly built and oscillated out of the southerly direction from less than 5 mph to 10 mph toward the end of the day. Many sailors enjoyed one of the best weather weekends so far this season with most of the day spent in the mid-60's and sunny skies. Courses of modified windward-leewards and Olympics were used for 10 races in each division. Each division filed a protest" resulting in the University of Michigan disqualified from race 3B. Thanks to George Griswold, Allan Vorel, and Dan Lorenz for serving as judges.
A bit cooler than the previous day at 52 degrees" teams arrived for more wind out of the easterly direction, approximately 7-10 mph. A modified olympic and a normal Olympic course were used in each division to finish the regatta at 12 races sailed in each division. Throughout the weekend, sailors enjoyed chili provided by Allan and Karel Vorel.. Congratulations to Wisconsin 2 for winning the amazing table created by MSU team member Jaime Ziegler.
Thank you to the MSU Sailing Center and their staff for their help before and during this regatta. Many thanks to PRO Mike Moody, Pat Dolan, Doug Carlson, and other Lansing Sailing Club members for doing the race management. This was a singlehanded event held with Laser full rigs. The results below are for the 10 races completed over the weekend. Racing commenced on Saturday morning to bright skies with a light breeze of 0-5 knots from the southeast. Three races were completed before a break for lunch. Two more races were completed after lunch as the breeze clocked around to the south. After five races racing was called for the day due to the lack of wind. Sunday brought with it more wind. The first race carried with it the biggest breeze of the day, with 12-15 knot winds from the west. The wind clocked around to the northwest for the remainder of the morning and afternoon with a consistent 5-10 knot breeze.

There were numerous capsizes and one mast failure along with a bridle attachment which failed. There was a request for redress and three protests, one of which was brought by the Jury for a kinetics violation. Five races were held for the men and five for the women by the end of the day. The racing was very close with a third of the field still in contention to qualify for the ICSA Finals.
Sunday's races were sailed in 3-8 MPH ESE, Five races were held, three for the men and two for the women. There was one protest and no breakdowns. All courses were modified windward-leewards.

Harken Clinic
Western Michigan University
October 25-26, 2003
The purpose of this year's Harken Clinic was to develop skills in making decisions which will improve competitive performance in sailboat racing, including team building, effective use of practice time, drill selection and analysis of performance.
There were 42 participants from nine teams and 7 coaches who assembled at the Gull Lake Yacht Club to get instruction and practice drills. The group was split into two "Divisions" so that one group could get instruction ashore while the other group was practicing their skills on the water.
George Griswold and Alli Bell conducted sessions on team building and how to get the most out of practice. Dave Johnson, Mike Moody, Pat Dolan, Doug Carlson and Chad Coberly held discussions on Drill Selection and conducted sessions on the water so that the participants could practice drills to take home to their own practices. The on the water sessions were hampered by a lack of wind, giving the participants a chance to find out how to sail faster in those conditions.
Sunday's Boudeman Memorial Regatta was held as part of the Clinic. There was more wind and three races were sailed in each Division. The boats were not rotated and coaching was permitted during the races as well as between races. The teams ashore wrote coaching notes as they watched their other Division sailing.
Awards were given to the team with the best coaching notes (Wisconsin), to the team which did the best in the heeling drill (Wisconsin), to the team which solved the reversed top batten problem (Lake Forest), and to the team which did the best job of picking up the mark with their spreader(Western Michigan). A special award was given to the team which had their boats in the water and sailing the earliest on Sunday morning (Purdue).
