2004 Cary Price Memorial Regatta
University of Michigan
October 2-3, 2004
Saturday: Six races per division were sailed in the Cary-Price Intersectional today. Courses were modified triangles and trapezoids and the boats were 420s. Wind was 2 to 22 knots and current in the Detroit River passing by the host, Bayview Yacht Club, was about 2 knots. One breakdown was disallowed and one redress was granted.
Sunday: Cool temperatures met the sailors along with beautiful sunny skies. Winds were NNW at 7-10 knots. 4 races per division were sailed with courses being modified triangles, olympics, and trapezoids. Three attempts for redress were heard and all were denied. We would like to thank PRO Marcia Everingham, Head Judge Ted Everingham, and the Michigan Sailing Team for their help and support of the regatta.

Saturday: 10 races were sailed in excellent conditions: 5-7 knots from the SSW which later clocked around to the West. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 60s. The 19 competitors sailed windward-leeward twice around courses. One protest was filed against Michigan 2 in race 10, who was disqualified.
Sunday: Brisk conditions greeted the fleet as the wind increased to 6-10 knots out of the North for the second day of racing. 5 more races were completed.
Ohio State Sailing would like to thank Jamie Jones and his excellent support staff for running a smooth and efficient regatta, and George Griswold for serving as chief judge, on and off the water.

October 22-24, 2004
Friday: Sailors were welcomed to Lake Minnetonka with fog, rain and temperatures in the low 50’s, however, a nice breeze out of the Southeast at 8-13 mph allowed for seven races to be completed.
Saturday: Another chilly morning with moderate fog but the breeze was still around, more from the South, at 8-13 mph. Three races were completed before lunch. In the afternoon, the breeze picked up dramatically and shifted to the west. Gusts were well into the 20 mph range and the sailors were challenged by typical Minnesota fall sailing conditions. A total of seven races were completed.
Sunday: Sunny skies but calm breeze.
The University of Minnesota would like to thank the Wayzata Yacht Club for their continued support of their program and all of youth sailing. The team would also like to thank the ICSA and Vanguard for their continued support of collegiate sailing as well as the Burgum Family, the Kobs Family, the Wayzata Sailing Foundation and the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association for the contributions to the event.
Genuine and true thanks extended to Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the University of Minnesota, Cappy Capper and Brent Ostbye, for making this event possible with many long hours of preparation over the past two weekends. Also, thanks to Principal Race Officer Blake Middleton and his staff, Head Judge Dr. Bruce Martinson and jury members Zak Fanberg, Sam Rogers and Tim Krech. Scoring and website updates by Anne Scheuerman and Ernest Brody, food by Dee Ghering and her staff, as well as countless members from the University of Minnesota Sailing Team and members of the Wayzata Yacht Club for manning safety boats, coordinating traffic and assistance to the race committee.

Words of advice from the Commodore: Alex Symes
My crew Oren and I were fighting hard for first place coming up to the last windward mark of the last race of the Hoosier Daddy. My team was in second place and I was in first in the ‘A’ division. Oren was hiking hard as we sailed on port to the starboard layline. There was a puff just ahead and I knew that puff would be our regatta. “Oren, we are tacking in that puff... Two, One, Puff On, Hike!” Oren and I hiked hard just for a second as the puff hit our boat. “Tacking” The jib luffed and we hit the rail hard, crossed the boat and began to hike. Just as the boat was entering the new tack, the mast began to fall. I instantly knew what had happened; our shroud adjuster had lost its pin. There was no breakdown, no breakdown points and no Hooiser Daddy Chair. Our regatta was over.
This was not the only demasting at the Hoosier Daddy this year, and it was not the only breakdown. These breakdowns could have been prevented by both the sailors and the teams that loaned the boats. To prevent breakdowns at practice and in races, do a quick check before you leave the dock. Tape the pins on the shroud, examine the u-joint on your tiller, and check your toe straps. Do not leave the dock with breaking parts. You will not be given breakdown points for parts that were broken before you left the dock. To prevent problems before you put your boats in the water, update bad parts. Replace bent clevis pins, frayed lines and tattered u-joints. Do this now so you do not have to miss your first practice in the spring due to broken parts. Also, there may be some fall specials at boat stores (try the ICSA sponsor Layline!). Remember, keeping our boats in working shape is your responsibility.
The November Haiku: Broken sailboats stink
Replace or Fix Broken Parts Do not wait ‘till spring
Our Aging FJ’s: Ward Detwiler
Call them old. Call them well used. Call them #@$%! What ever you want to call them, our collective fleet of FJ’s is deteriorating. While some of the fleet still has a few years left in them if we slap on enough duct tape and 4200, many of our boats are just plain unsightly. Uneven fleets, numerous breakdowns, and injuries resulting from equipment failure plague our regattas. The solution to this problem does not lie in epoxy and sand paper, but in replacement of boats.
While some people may hold prejudice against the FJ, and would be reluctant to buy a new one, they do have their merits. They are the cheapest of any college dinghy. They are durable and last quite a while (as OSU could certainly tell you, no offense). And, they are light, easy to handle, and excel in light air, all of which are plusses when sailing on a cramped inland lake. To top it all off, they are the boat of choice for MCSA regattas, so it would be silly to buy any other boat for bringing to regattas.
BYOB, a team would only need to buy one boat for traveling. While an entire fleet of new FJ’s would be ideal, it would also be expensive and unrealistic. However, there are lots of good used boats on the market that are only two or three years old. Every spring schools like Navy or Coast Guard, or any East Coast powerhouse sailing school, sell off fleets of boats that have been used for only a few seasons. While these boats have been sailed hard, they are still in great condition, and would be a marked improvement on our situation. Another plus is that these schools often give fleet discounts for buying in bulk. While no one MCSA team needs to buy six used FJ’s, we could get a group of interested teams together in the spring, and have an MCSA bulk order.
Given these discounts, your team may only need to raise as little as $2,000. You can try hitting up alumni, your school, parents, or just get out there as a team and work for it. This is a very realistic goal, and one that will make our district more competitive with each other, and at regattas around the country. With a newer fleet, we will have more competitive racing, less breakdowns, and most importantly, no excuses.
Important Reminders
Updates
If your team has not already updated the Team Information on the ICSA Website it needs to be done as soon as possible. Follow the directions on the website.
If your team has not filled out the Annual Report form on the MCSA Website it needs to be done as soon as possible. The Annual Report form can be found under forms and be filled in on-line.
Best Regatta Award
The Woodward Award is given to the school hosting the best regatta during the calendar year. There is a form on the MCSA Website which can be filled in by each team attending a regatta to evaluate that regatta. It is important that each team attending a regatta assign a team member to evaluate the regatta. Only one form for each team can be counted. There must be forms from 75% of the teams attending a regatta with five or more schools to qualify it for the award. It is also required that 80% or more of the form be filled out so that a complete and fair analysis is obtained. The Regatta Evaluation form can be found under "Forms" on the MCSA Website. Please take the time to evaluate any regatta your team has not submitted a form for this year - also encourage other teams attending that regatta to submit their form as well.
Nominations for the MCSA Sportsmanship Award
Nominations of individuals for the MCSA Sportsmanship Award can be made by filling out on-line the Sportsmanship Nomination form which can be found under "Forms" on the MCSA Website. Sportsmanship both on and off of the racecourse should be recognized. If the individual exhibiting good sportsmanship is not nominated then the award will not be given out for 2004 – it is up to members of the MCSA to identify and nominate individuals who exhibit good sportsmanship.
