Sherman Hoyt Trophy
Brown University
October 22-23, 2005

Saturday: A cold, damp, rainy day with a light easterly breeze at 4-6 knots. Breeze got a little better as the day went on and got above 6 knots at times. Races were all Gold Cups and were long with the strong current from all of the rain. No protests and one request for redress that was denied. Big breeze forecasted for tomorrow.

Sunday: Another cold day, but without the rain and much better breeze from the N/NW at 8-16 knots. All course were windward/leewards with gates (3,4, or 5 legs). Very shifty and up and down pressure made for some tight races and numerous lead changes. 13 races were sailed in each Division.

Wisco Women's Regatta
Wisconsin
Oct 22-23, 2005

The Wisco Women's Regatta was a rockin time for the females of the MCSA. 24 Girls took Madison WI by storm, and consequently the general attractiveness of the city jumped 3 fold this weekend. One protest was filed, and two breakdowns. On Saturday, breeze was from the NNW at 7-15. Sunday started out at N 7-10, and increased to 15-20 NNE. Waves were intense, separating the women from the.. real women. Overall, the event was HOT - 4 real. So hot in fact, that Wisconsin cannot handle hosting another women's regatta for at least a year. See you next year, and congratulations Michigan for their victory.

Gull Lake Yacht Club, MI
Hosted by Western Michigan Univ. & Michigan State Univ.
October 28-30, 2005

Friday: Day one began with light winds, ranging from 0 to 6 knots. The weather was sunny with temperatures ranging from 40 to 60 degrees. Racing was called at 3:30 p.m., due to lack of winds after one race.

Saturday: Racing began at 10 am, with sunny skies, temperatures in the 40's and winds ranging from 0 to 6 knots. Three windward leeward courses were completed before competitors took a break for lunch. Winds built up to 10 knots out of the S-SW for 3 more races in the afternoon. Temperatures were in the low 60's. Four windward leeward courses were completed and two Olympic courses were sailed by the end of racing on Saturday. Two protests were heard Saturday evening over the same incident in Race 3 resulting in a DSQ for Connecticut College. In Race 3, both Texas A&M . Galveston and Harvard University accepted 20% Penalties. Texas A&M Galveston and St. Mary's College took 20% Penalties in Race 7.

Sunday: Sunny skies greeted sailors for the third day in a row with temperatures in the upper 60's. Winds started at 6 knots and increased to 17 knots out of the southwest by the second race today. Three windward-leeward courses were sailed on Sunday to complete the round-robin. Two breakdown reports and one request for redress were heard by the judges.

Competitors attended a dinner Friday night sponsored by the International Star Class, where speaker Mark Mendelblatt gave a history of his sailing career from his years in collegiate sailing at Tufts University up to his Star Class sailing today, including his Laser Olympic Campaign in 2004. He also provided an interesting story of his experience sailing at the Sloop Champs at Gull Lake Yacht Club in 1993 for Tufts.

Judges: George Griswold, Andy Keiner, Dennis Bartley, Dave Schaffer (Friday & Saturday), and Ed Theisen (Sunday). PRO: Tim Rumptz

Commodore: Cate Mueller

I wanted to discuss communication a little bit this month. One of the reasons many of the other districts such as MAISA and NEISA have such smooth running districts is because of the easy open flow of communication between schools and the board of the district. I think one of the main reasons for this is definitely because there are many more coaches in these districts and it is their job to make sure that this flow of communication exists and that things run smoothly. I recognize that we as a district are in a very different situation. We have way less coaching than other districts and therefore way fewer formal chains of communication between the board and the rest of the district.

As I was sitting and writing the agenda for our next board meeting it hit me, that I was simply putting things on the agenda that I felt needed to be addressed. But there must be more. There must be things that you all want to see addressed and discussed, issues that you all have seen at regattas or issues that you are facing within your team. I of course cannot be everywhere all the time. I admit that because of a busy summer race schedule as of now I have only been able to make it to one event, but there have been plenty so far this season. What I’m aiming at here is that I want your input, whether it is your personal input, or your input as a school. I want to know what you all are thinking, the things that you all want to see happen. We on the Board are only a handful of people, and we all know that more ideas are always better. So I’m asking from one sailor to another, please tell me of issues that you have, concerns, or just thoughts. You’d be amazed at the difference one e-mail can make and I look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.
