Cedarfest
Michigan State University
October 7-8, 2006

Saturday was cloudy in the morning but cleared in the afternoon. The wind was light and shifty on Lake Lansing. PRO Mike Moody did all that he could to keep the course square to the wind. Eight races were sailed in each Division before the wind gave out completely. Two Breakdowns were awarded.

Sunday was sunny but racing was delayed because of lack of wind. Before the time limit for the regatta expired each Division sailed four more races. Owens earned the right to have their name engraved on the perpetual Cedarfest Trophy which is a carved bust of Sparty the Michigan State Mascot.

Storm Trysail Club's Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta
Larchmont Y.C.
October 7-8

A record 240 college sailors participated in the Storm Trysail Club's (STC) 2006 Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta presented by Prestige Toyota at Larchmont Yacht Club over Columbus Day weekend. STC runs the regatta to introduce college dinghy sailors to the teamwork of big-boat racing and give college sailors who specialize in big-boat racing a venue at which to participate. Thirty-three boats raced in four one-design divisions, making the racing extremely close.

The first two races--four-legged windward-leeward races--were sailed in 20-25 knots of breeze, and the fleet was limited to No. 3 genoas and no spinnakers. "For the most part, the college teams handled the boats well and had close finishes," said Adam Loory event organizer. "Crews on the sprit boats 'winged-out' their jibs by hand - something the dinghy teams were used to."

The third race was sailed in a dying southeasterly that dropped from 15 knots to six by the time the last J/105 finished. After the big breeze on Saturday, Sunday dawned flat calm. The fleet drifted around for two hours, and the race committee gave up waiting for the wind and sent the fleet home for the awards ceremony.

Thanks to sponsorship from Prestige Toyota, Vineyard Vines, Rolex Watch U.S.A., Safe Flight Instruments, UK-Halsey Sailmakers, Coca Cola, J/Boats, and Gill, the regatta was free for all participants and boat owners. All the crewmembers on the first-, second- and third-place boats in each division won regatta polo shirts from Vineyard Vines. The boat owners were thanked with polo shirts, custom etched bottles of Mt. Gay Rum and a 20% discount on the entry fee for the Storm Trysail Club's 2007 Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex.

2006 Boudeman Cup
Western Michigan University
October 21, 2006

Saturday morning began dreary and overcast with temps in the mid 40's. A breeze from the South held for the entire day, ranging from 3 to 8 kts. A light sprinkle graced the racers just before noon, but never materialized into more than a mist. Shortly after noon, the sun made an appearance and temperatures rose into the mid 50's. Courses sailed were windward-leewards once and twice around. A full rotation was sailed on Saturday, so the decision was made to call the regatta final after 6 races in each division. No protests or breakdowns were filed. Congratulations to WMU team 1 for their win.

October 21-22, 2006

Limited races were completed on Saturday under warm, clear skies and light variable winds. Sunday was sunny and cooler with a 16 kt breeze out of the NW and powerful gusts. A big thanks to Steve Gay for running the RC and to Jim Hammond, Kathryn's father, who came out to watch the races and share his memories of his daughter with us. Boats: FJ
