Harken Clinic
Northwestern University
September 26-27, 2009
In 2008 the MCSA Executive Board with the support of Harken decided to create a clinic for Midwest collegiate sailors for the top sailors in the district. It was their goal that by bringing together teams from all over the district to receive coaching and practice against each other the level of sailing in the district would be increased. This years coaches were Joey Harris, long time director of Lake Forest Sailing, along with Jacob Carlin and Andy Graff, both are former college sailors and still actively race V15 in Chicago. Based upon their records in the 2008/2009 season the following sailors were in attendance to the clinic on September 26/27 hosted by Northwestern University.
Christina Baker Michigan Eric Defeo Northwestern Lief Evensen Wisconsin Blake Griffin Michigan Lauren Knowles Michigan State Joe Kutschenreute Wisconsin Ryan Lashsaway Toledo Daniel Morris Michigan Geoff Pedrick Northwestern Patrick Richards Wisconsin Spencer Simms Miami Andrew Wien Northwestern
The clinic started on Saturday morning at nine with a chalk talk led by locals Joey Harris and Andy Graff. The breeze was very light, ranging from…zero…with puffs up to five or eight. Saturday was great practice for light air boat handling and working out the kinks of strategy. The wind was so light at times however, that boats were not moving and it took upwards of a minute to round a mark. Mark traps were a little rough. From there sailors worked through boat handling and team racing drills, familiarizing themselves with the other boats. Bryan Stenson provided delicious cold cuts and cheese for lunch.
On Sunday Andy was replaced by Jacob Karlin, another Chicago local, and sailors cycled through team races. The breeze was much heavier, hovering around twenty and building, foreshadowing the up to fifty on Monday.Wisconsin solidly dominated, while Northwestern and Michigan went back and forth. The day finished at one with two fleet races and a numerically sailed line that was epic. Overall it was a great weekend of solid sailing with a lot of learning and it was nice to start off the school year hanging out with twelve great boats

At Crescent Sail Yacht Club
October 3 – 4, 2009
Saturday, After a late start the sailors encountered heavy gusts of breeze reaching into the high 20's. The regatta was postponed after the first race due to safety for the sailors and equipment. The wind calmed around 2pm and the first rotation was then finished. Each Division completed 6 races and racing ended around 6 pm
Sunday: 4 races were completed by each division with a westerly wind or 10-15. The regatta was a great success, thanks to the volunteers and race committee for helping out. All together each division completed 10 races (half a rotation)

Cedarfest
Michigan State University
October 3 - 4, 2009
Saturday brought about cloudy skies and a few afternoon rain showers with temperatures in the low 50's. Winds were from the southwest at 5 - 15 mph. Each division completed 8 races, for a total of 16 races, all windward/leeward.
Sunday weather matched that of Saturday. There were some glimpses of blue skies, and rain showers held off. Each division sailed another 4 windward/leeward races, making for a complete regatta at 24 races. No protests or breakdowns were filed over the course of the weekend.
Thanks to everyone for coming out for Cedarfest, see you all next year.
Congratulations to Toledo for winning the regatta.

October 10-11, 2009
On Saturday we saw temperatures in the low 40s and high 30s with wind between 15 to 20mph. Both Women’s and Men’s divisions completed 2 races in the morning with a consistent 16mph wind. After heading in for lunch and to warm up, the fleets headed back on the lake in the afternoon as the winds became shiftier, oscillating between west and northwest. Many sailors retired early due to the extreme conditions. Men’s division completed 5 races, while Women’s completed 4.
On Sunday the fleet experienced low temperatures in the 30s with a lighter breeze of 6-10mph. The breeze continued to oscillate making it increasingly difficult for RC to set a fair course throughout the morning. The Men’s division completed 4 more races and the Women’s completed 3 before calling it a day.
The highlight of the event happened when Wisconsin’s Meg Six gave her boat to Michigan State’s Lauren Knoles after Knoles mast snapped on the first upwind leg of Sunday’s first race. Due to this show of Corinthian spirit Knoles went on to finish second in Women’s, and qualified for nationals.
Many thanks to the sailors, judges Betsy Altman, George Griswold, and Mike Kasper, PRO Bob Franke, and Mark Set’s Pat Randa for helping to make this weekend a success despite the frigid temperatures.

Saturday: Teams arrived to the lake at 8:30am; races began at roughly 10:00am. The wind was light in the morning building to around 15 towards the end of the day. There were several brief postponements throughout the day to reset the course as the wind clocked from the West to the North. One race was abandoned after the first leg due to a drifting leeward mark. During a rotation a mainsail was ripped and repaired with sail tape, racing concluded when the tape failed prior to the last B rotation of the day. A total of 10 races were sailed.
Sunday: Teams arrived at 9:00am and were welcomed with a temp. about 10 degrees cooler than the previous day. The B division led the day off in a 6-9 North wind. Without an extra set of 420 sails the ripped main was replaced with a FJ main. Racing concluded at 1:00 after a total of 6 races were sailed. No protests were filed the entire weekend and trophies were awarded to the winners of the A and B division and the top three overall schools.
Congratulations to Northwestern 1 who took 1st overall.

Fall Regatta
October 16-17, 2009
Saturday: Races began on Saturday with a 5 knot wind from the North. Breeze died down around noon. Sailors enjoyed a delicious lunch of burritos and cornbread, and winds picked back up to 5 knots after lunch, this time from the South. The light and shifty conditions did not however, prevent one capsize. Windward leeward course was used and 4 races were completed in B division, and 6 races were completed in A division. One protest was filed.
Sunday: Sunday continued the sunny weekend with winds ranging from 3-6 knots from the North. A division completed 2 races. The light and shifty conditions did not however, prevent another capsize. Breakfast was a sausage egg and cheese casserole. Two races were completed in each division. No protests were filed.
Congratulations to OSU, John Carroll, Notre Dame, Wittenberg and Michigan State. Thanks to all the teams who attended for making Buckeye Invitational a fun and successful regatta. Special thanks go out to the kitchen crew, race committee, protest committee, and the Flying Scot fleet for helping out.

Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny with winds 9-10 mph from the west and temperatures in the mid 40's. A's went out for their first set sailing two long modified W1s. The wind clocked to the NW when B's went out and the course changed to W2's. Racing continued throughout the day with winds picking up to 10-14 mph, lots of chop and increasing cloud cover. The women were served grilled ham and cheese and tomato soup for lunch. The weather cooled, the wind lessened slightly and racing ended at 4pm with 8 races completed in A's and 6 in B's.
Sunday was also sunny with temperatures in the 40's again. B's went out for the first set with SW winds of 10-15 gusting to 18 mph and no chop, a lovely change from Saturday. Two more sets were sailed, completing the rotation, and ending the day at 1pm. Painted glasses were awarded to top three teams and low point A's and B's. Thanks to race committee Aaron Mann and Anna Bargren and thanks to all the teams that came for the weekend. See you all next year.

MCSA Match Race
Sail Sheboygan, US Match Racing Center
October 17-18, 2009
Sunday brought clear skies and warm weather to Sheboygan, WI where seven midwest teams were sparing off in the first MCSA match. After a banquet on Saturday night which featured an umpire de-brief where teams were able to learn some new boat handling tricks as well as match racing strategies all teams were ready to get back on the water racing. The format for the day was the top 4 teams advanced onto the semi-final round with Northwestern, the leader from day 1, racing Ohio State and Wisconsin racing Minnesota, in a best of five series. The winners would move onto the finals, another best of five. Concurrently, the 5-7th spots were being sorted out by a double round robin sailed by Miami, Illinois, and St. Thomas.
Tod Reynolds and crew, Nick Campbell and Geoff Pedrick, from Northwestern University beat out the Wisconsin team in the last match of the finals. Northwestern took the early lead in the finals with 2 wins, but Christine Porter, Patrick McMinn and Jeremy McMahon battled back to win the next 2 matches. Tied 2-2, it came down to who would win the last race. Northwestern won the start and kept the lead throughout the race. Tod credited his success on the race course to great crew work and to Don Wilson and Bill Hardesty of the Chicago Match Race Center who introduced him to advanced match racing the previous summer.
Northwestern had beat the team of Anthony Julian, John Bennett and Neal Gordon from Ohio State in the semi-finals and Wisconsin beat the team of Matt Thompson, Braden Solum, Nick Hovland and Eric Tobias from Minnesota to advance to the finals. Minnesota finished 3rd in the regatta beating Ohio 2-1.
While the event was most team’s introduction to match racing, there was steady improvement throughout the weekend, and everyone left with a desire to do more match racing.
Thanks to Sheboygan PRO, Rich Reichelsdorfer who ran 45 Races over the 2 day regatta. The 8 umpires who officiated every match, and the Sail Sheboygan hospitality committee who put on a fantastic event.
Final Results 1 – Northwestern 2 – Wisconsin 3 – Minnesota 4 – Ohio State 5 – Miami 6 – St. Thomas 7 – Illinois 8 – Michigan (No Show)
The R-P data is being requested and will be added if received.

Saturday Races began at 1000 with a light and shifty breeze with temperatures in the fifties. The mood was light out on the water. Both A and B Division sailed a total of 6 races. Race committee filed one protest, but the competitor withdrew from the race. Racing concluded for the day 1530.
Sunday began with cooler temperatures and the As began the day in light winds again. Bs followed for one complete set and the day concluded with one additional race in each division to complete one full rotation. Thank you to all parents and volunteers who helped throughout the weekend.

ICSA Sloop Championship Regatta
Coast Guard
October 23-25, 2009
Friday: Competitors arrived to a 15 knot NE wind which lasted for the practice session. The breeze faded and turned to the east making very difficult conditions. 3 races were completed, all windward-leeward 3 times around in 5-8 knots of wind. One breakdown was awarded for a failed universal. Forecast is for stormy conditions on Saturday. SMC is in the lead.
Saturday: Morning brought light rain with southerly winds ranging from 10-14 knots. Four races were sailed in the morning using course W6 and W5. After a brief lunch break competitors went back out to winds 15-18 for the eight race. The last two races the wind decreased to under 10 knots.
The Championship came down to the last race between St. Mary's and Boston College. BC got behind on the first beat while St. Mary's had the points needed to win but Skipper Taylor Canfield fought hard enough to pass one boat on the final run to finish tied with St. Mary's and won the tie breaker on virtue of their three 1st place finishes.
