Cary-Price Memorial Regatta
Michigan
October 1-2, 2011
Intersectional Regatta 420
Saturday, the Cary-Price regatta began around 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI. The first race was started but abandoned after the wind increased and several boats capsized. Once all boats came in, racing was called for the day as the wind was not forecasted to drop below 20. Hopefully the wind will cooperate more on Sunday so racing can be continued. Thank you to the GPYC sailing coaches who helped with Race Committee.
Sunday, Racing started just after 10 on Sunday. The breeze was a little lighter than yesterday and further west, so good racing in windy conditions was held. Five races per division were run. Notre Dame beat Michigan by a point, with Northwestern third. Thank you to the GPYC for hosting the regatta, the families who hosted the visiting teams, the coaches who helped with race committee, George Griswold for hearing protests, and all the teams who helped put away the boats after racing. Thank everyone for coming and we hope to see you next year.

Cedarfest Regatta
Michigan State University
October 1-2, 2011
Saturday: All teams showed up bright and early on Saturday at Lake Lansing for the Cedarfest Regatta. It was cloudy and low 50s. It was very gusty and the lowest recorded wind speed was 17mph coming from the North. Unfortunately because of the high winds we called off all racing on Saturday.
Sunday the weather was on our side. Cloudy with the sun just peaking out to keep us warm in the mid 50s. Winds were coming from the North and the Northwest at 10 to 17mph. We set up a double windward leeward course. We got 10 races in. Medals were award to the first, second, and third place for A and B fleets and to the top three school over all.
CONGRATULATIONS to all the teams that got awards. A fleet: First place Ohio State, second place, Western Michigan, and third place Northwestern. B fleet: First place Michigan State, second place Ohio State, and third place Toledo. Overall awards went to: First place, Ohio State, second place, Western Michigan, and third place, Northwestern.

Danmark Trophy
Coast Guard
October 1-2, 2011
Intersectional Regatta FJ
Saturday, Day one of the Danmark Trophy started with a beautiful Northerly breeze with relatively little current. Six races per division were sailed before the competitors took a short lunch break. After lunch the breeze was much less cooperative, shifting from the Northeast to Northwest with occasional spots on the racecourse with very little air. That on top of a strong flood made for very challenging conditions for the final four races in each division. All courses were W-4 except the last B-Division race which was a W-3. One redress was filed and granted to fix a scoring error and one protest was heard resulting in a DSQ. Thank you to our judge, Judy Krimski, for hearing these and policing all day on the water.
Sunday at the Danmark Trophy brought very tough conditions for the race committee. Competitors showed up to a dying Northerly that had some promise at first but eventually petered out. A Westerly started to fill around 10:30, finally filling across the racecourse enough to start race 11A at 11:15. That breeze held until 1:45 when race 13B had to be abandoned due to lack of breeze. Finally at 2:30 a southerly filled in time to finish race 13B. All races on Sunday were W-4s. No protests were filed. Thanks to the great team of Coast Guard cadets who helped run races this weekend. Their hard work made for the best possible racing given the trying conditions. Thanks also to Justin Assad for helping out as ICSA rep and Judy Krimski for judging.

Saturday, Sailors arrived to beautiful conditions on Lake Seneca. A high of 80 and more wind than was predicted allowed for 4A and 4B races to be held in south winds from 4 to 14 knots. All races were W4s with leeward gates. Racing was done for the day at 2:45 when the wind died. Teams waited till 4 pm but the wind did not fill in. Thanks to all the HWS Sailors who helped run the races today. Also thank you to Ward Cromwell, Brian Clancy, and Russ O'Reilly for hearing two protested which resulted in one DSQ.
Sunday, Sailors were again treated to beautiful conditions on Seneca Lake. 4a and 4b races were sailed in a south breeze from 4 to 12 knots. All courses were w4's with leeward gates. Racing ended for the day at 1:30pm when the breeze died. Sailors waited on the water until 2:15 when it became clear the wind was gone for good. It was a beautiful weekend on the Long Island Sound with temperatures around 80 degrees throughout the day. Wind was very light; around 5 knots and three races were completed.
The second day the wind was even lighter. The day started with a postponement as we all hoped for more wind. The first race began and the boats drifted over the starting line. Unfortunately the race was called by the time the first of the yachts reached the windward mark. After this, most of the fleets furled their jibs, the college sailors went swimming and lounged as we waited for another sequence, unfortunately there was not enough wind to start another race and we sailed in at 2:00.
Thanks to the individuals who reported this 47 boat event in which 6 MCSA teams participated: Will Andreas, Will Jaquinde, Sammy Barbour, Aras Karaitis, Kirk Arnt, and Tyler Cullinan.

After being postponed for an hour on Saturday October 15, we came to a unanimous decision to abandon racing for the day due to unsafe sailing conditions. The wind was blowing 20-22 knots from the south with gusts up to 25 knots. Sunday morning turned out to be quite the opposite. We had an oscillating westerly wind blowing at about 5 knots, growing to 8. We were able to complete four races for each fleet (A and B). There were no protests and no breakdowns. Congratulations to Western Michigan Universitys Gold team for taking first place. We also had the honor of obtaining our trophy this year which will be engraved for the 1st place winner from this year forward.

Saturday, Sailors were sent out to a modified gold cup course with wind in the low 20's, gusting to mid/high 30's. After considerable fight from the sailors, only a fraction of the fleet was able to keep control consistently, so everyone was sent to shore for postponement. When the wind showed no signs of lessening at 3pm, racing was called for the day.
Sunday, Sailors started early on a windward leeward course with an offset and gate. The wind was much lighter than yesterday and 7 races were completed before the time limit. Many thanks to our great race committee for dealing with the wildly shifty conditions and keeping our courses square throughout the day. The top two places were tied going into the final race, where Andrew Fox of Wisconsin beat out teammate Joe Kutchenreuter to win the 2011 MCSA Men's Singlehand Championship. Congratulations to Andrew and Joe, as well as Harrison Burton from Minnesota for qualifying for nationals in Chicago.

Saturday, October 22: With only 3 teams at the first-ever Michigan Men's regatta, the race committee decided to combine the divisions and sail everyone at once. After a short delay due to wind, the first two races were sailed in light breeze. The wind built from the West before noon, so two more races were held, moving to a twice-around course for the second. Sailors went in for lunch, then returned to the water for 8 more races in the afternoon, for a total of 12 races on the day, completing a full round robin. Racing ended around 4.
Sunday, October 23: Like on Saturday, the wind was too light at the start, so an on shore postponement began the day. Shortly thereafter, race committee sent everybody out, but had to wait another 15 minutes as the wind died again. Eventually, the wind came up with the sunlight, and 4 races were held before racing ended just after noon. Everybody received awards since there were only 3 teams in attendance. Michigan Maize won, followed by Michigan Blue and Michigan Tech. Thank you to Michigan Tech for driving 10 hours to attend the regatta, George Griswold for attending and advising, and the Michigan Sailing Club for hosting and use of the RC boats. We hope more teams come next year!
