Volume 59, Number 5 October 2005
Harry Anderson
Yale University
September 3-4, 2005
Better weather could not have graced this year's Harry Anderson Regatta. A full fleet of 24 teams competed. Conditions were quite tricky - a NW wind from the land, varying from 5 to 13 knots in the puffs. Five and four-leg Windward- leeward courses were sailed with a gate and an offset mark. The races averaged twenty five minutes, allowing a totally of six races in each division in 420s.

JESUIT SCHOOL INTERSECTIONAL
Fordham University
September 24-25, 2005
Saturday was racing at its best on Eastchester Bay, under a clear blue sky with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop. Throughout the morning, winds blew from the northeast at 15 - 17 knots before shifting to the east and diminishing to 10 -12 knots after lunch, and easing to 5 - 10 knots later in the day. Fourteen races were sailed. Sunday was overcast and cloudy, and the wind came from the south initially about 5 - 8 knots and later 8 - 12 knots. Fourteen more races were sailed for a complete seven set rotation before finishing at 1300 to provide ample time for our guests from Cleveland and South Bend to return to campus at a reasonable hour. In addition to some great sailing, guests were treated to an overabundance of calories with New York City's famous H&H Bagels & Cream Cheese, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, New England Clam Chowder, great Italian Bread and the world's most delicious Cheesecake from S&S Bakery in the Bronx.
Fordham wishes to thank Mr. Glen Vitaglione & Mr. Steve Breiness of Morris Yacht & Beach Club, who offered their boats for Race Committee service on Saturday & Sunday respectively, and to Patrick James for manning the safety boat for both days.

<b>Fall Fury Intersectional<b>
Madison, Wisconsin
September 10-11, 2005
Members of the MCSA, SAISA and SEISA conferences enjoyed a beautiful weekend of sailing as temperatures hit the 90's at the Fall Fury on Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin. Saturday, competitors experienced shifty conditions out of the SSE at 5-10 kts. Sunday, winds were out of the SW at 7-10 kts. One entire rotation was completed with 12 races in both divisions. Modified windward-leeward and triangle courses were used for racing. One protest was heard by judges George Griswold, Bob Pegel and John Porter. Indiana was disqualified for violating Rule 13 in Race 5B. Special thanks PRO Mark Prange.

Boiler Cup Regatta
Purdue University
September 10-11, 2005
The Boiler Cup was held on Lake Shafer in Monticello, Indiana with 15 teams competing. We had two sunny days in the mid 90's of great competition. Saturday winds were very light and shifty, but mostly out of the SSW. Races where postponed at 2:30 until Sunday due to a lack of wind. Sunday was much better with a consistent 4-6 kts with gusts of 8-10 from the South. 8 races where completed for both divisions. Windward-leewards were the course of choice both days. No protests where filed. Congratulations to the Miami Sailing Team for winning the Boiler Cup. We would like to thank Tom Mitchell and Bruce High and the rest of the Purdue sailors for making the regatta a success.

MCSA SLOOP CHAMPIONSHIP
Detroit Yacht Club
September 24-25, 2005
Saturday: The wind was out of the north at 10-15. A sunny morning gave way to clouds. Six Windward-leeward twice around races were completed with a single round race to finish the day. After several races it was obvious that one of the Flying Scots had a dirty bottom making it uncompetitive. The Jury removed the boat from the rotation and awarded each school a Bye for the race in which they were scheduled to sail that boat. There was one other breakdown during a race and two which occurred between races. All were fixed within 5 minutes by Al Minsterman and the DYC dock crew. The sailing was very competitive with several teams taking the lead as the day progressed.
Sunday: Light winds from the southeast greeted the sailors in the first race of the day. The winds and clouds increased as hurricane Rita began to arrive in the area. Five races were completed under the direction of PRO Ed Theisen and the Race Committee. The regatta went down to the last race with Minnesota in the lead by two points followed by Indiana and Northwestern tied for second place and the last slot to qualify for the ICSA Sloop Nationals. Indiana won the last race with Minnesota finishing 2nd to win the MCSA Sloop Championship. Northwestern's 3rd place finish gave them third for the regatta.
The Protest Committee headed by George Griswold awarded a breakdown to Marquette in Race 1, and a DSQ to Western Michigan in race 9 for a barging incident at the start. Marquette also took an RAF for the same incident. Two 20% penalties were taken on water by Western Michigan in Race 2 and Miami in Race 11.

Davis Cup
Iowa
September 24-25
Saturday morning teams gathered at 8AM at the Iowa Sailing Club boathouse on Lake McBride, 10 miles North of Iowa City. A thunderstorm ensued. For three hours distant thunder rumblings prolonged any racing. Coincidentally, the wind throughout the morning blew at a measly 5 knots or less. Races started at 1PM when the storm lifted and the breeze picked up. By mid-afternoon the wind blew steadily between 10-15 knots. The wind was, however, quite shifty the course was frequently re-set. The boats sailed were Iowa's fleet of FJ's. Sixteen races took place; 10 Saturday, 6 Sunday. The course sailed was a windward-leward course. Once around when the wind was light and twice around Saturday afternoon when the breeze was good. Sunday morning brought light winds and longer races. The Michigan State Green squad won both divisions and consequently won sweet beanie caps made by Iowa sailors. The protest committee consisted of Bill Boudelier, John Huntley. The race committee consisted of Lauren Trolley, Warren Darling, and Rich Adkins. The crash boat was driven by John McCormick and Dillan Laughlin. Thank you to all who volunteered their time. The regatta chair is Matt Legg.
