Harry Anderson Trophy
Yale University
September 2-3, 2006

Saturday: Sailing started under grey skies, thanks to Ernesto. The wind was extremely gusty, coming from the NE. One full set was completed, with winds between 10 and 20 knots, with puffs up to 25. As A division tried to sail a second set, Ernesto brought a 30 knot puff that flipped a large portion of the fleet and bent one mast. No protests were heard and one breakdown was awarded. Boats: 420

Sunday: Sailing started with grey skies and 2-5 knots from the SE. For the later sets the winds picked up to around 10 knots before dying to around 5 knots for the last two sets. The weather cleared up in the afternoon to blue skies. No protests were heard.

A huge thanks to the Yale Sailing Team for hosting the regatta and to the judges, Meredith Killion, Nicole Breault, Dan Santovasi, George Malcomson, Ed Stewart, Eric Steinlauf.

Streufert Cup Memorial Regatta
University of Minnesota
September 16-17, 2006

Saturday - Forecasted thunderstorms never appeared and skies were sunny with highs in the 70's. Winds held steady between 15-25 all day. 37 races were sailed on a modified triangles off of the floating dock, Floatilla. One breakdown was filed and no protests.

Sunday - Races were postponed due to really heavy winds. Winds settled down to about 15-25 and temperatures were in the low 70's with sunny skies. 8 races and 1 sail-off were sailed off the on shore dock.

A big THANKS to the race committee, the crash boats that worked extra hard due to the high winds and extraordinarily high amount of capsizes, the Wayzata Yacht Club for the fantastic sailing site, Bev Haverstock for the excellent food donations, Linda Ostbye for her runs to the store, Cappy Capper and Ben Burgum for mark set, the protest committee for the hard work on the breakdown that was filed, Helly Hanson, Chipotle, White Bear Boat Works and High Tempo for the raffle donations.

MCSA Sloop Championship
Detroit Yacht Club
September 23-24, 2006

Sunday looked promising with a scheduled 9:30 warning signal. The winds were building from 15-18. During the prestart practice Northwestern capsized while trying to untangle an hourglass in their spinnaker. It took over an hour to get the boat righted and pumped out. Western Michigan's jib halyard also let go causing the mast to come crashing down. With the winds continuing to build racing was postponed and all boats went ashore. At about 12:30 the winds had dropped from about 25 to under 20 and it was decided to sail race 4 without spinnakers. Wisconsin was OCS and did not return. The rudder blade on Northwestern's boat broke off and they were awarded a breakdown for race 5. Race 6 was started just after 2 pm and saw Miami's jib halyard fail causing another breakdown to be awarded. In Sunday's racing Michigan was unable to keep pace with Minnesota and slipped to 4th in the final standings behind Miami and Ohio State.

A special thanks to Al Minsterman and the rest of the Detroit Yacht Club volunteers who made the 30th time that the Detroit Yacht Club has hosted this event a success.

Davis Cup
University of Iowa
September 23-24, 2006

Saturday morning started off as a colder fall day with rain and no wind, but what more could anybody expect from Lake Mac Bride??! The regatta was postponed until 10am on Saturday for lack of wind to set the course. As the wind gradually built to a howling 0-5 mph, the course was set and the regatta was started with windward-leeward (1 and 2) courses. The temperature was between 50-60 on Saturday with overcast and rainy skies turning to fair conditions. Around 1pm, the wind built up to the expected 10-15 mph and the weather started to clear and warm up. The building wind created a few spectacles and a swamped boat. A total of 3 full rotations were sailed on Saturday. It was a perfect end to a great day of sailing as Lake Mac Bride? proved to everyone that it actually had wind!

Davis Cup was met with clear skies and a temperature of 65-70 with winds at 10-15 with gusts up to 20 on Sunday morning. As races began, the course was set for windward-leeward and quickly switched to triangles and a modified Olympic. The weather was beautiful and as the day went on, it warmed up enough to take off the wetsuits and extra gear. The somewhat shifty wind created some great races to watch and continued to baffle sailors. All in all, it was a gorgeous fall weekend and made for some incredible sailing! There was one protest filed, a redress, and a breakdown filed. Two more rotations were finished and then the prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall scores and low point A and B divisions. Thank you to all of the sailors that participated and made this a great regatta. The Iowa Sailing Team hopes to see you all again next year and wishes you the best of luck this fall!

Jesuit School Intersectional
Fordham University
September 23-24, 2006

On Saturday 20 races, modified triangles and windward-leewards in 420's, were held in S-SW winds, which ranged from 9 - 18 knots and gusts to 22. Sunday was more of the same with higher gusts but racing was called at 11:00 AM as a Memorial Service was scheduled to start on the waterfront at noon. As usual at our regattas, sailors were treated to breakfast each morning and Lunch on Saturday, and Cheesecake at the conclusion of racing on Sunday. One of the Notre Dame sailors was hit by a boom on Saturday afternoon. He was unable to move his jaw and the team took him to the hospital. As a result ND missed 12 of the 24 races, but he returned Sunday morning able to speak; eat cheesecake and sail in the last two races.

Special thanks go to alumni John Good '58, who provided his 45' Hunter as Race Committee boat, and John McAndrews? '71, who provided his smaller boat as a safety boat for two days, as well as to Assistant Coach Charles "Bud" McEntee? '72, former MAISA Undergraduate President, and the Fordham sailors, who worked.
