Boiler Cup

September 5-6, 2009
Saturday: Light wind caused a brief postponement after which PRO Robbie Cardose got race 1A started in just enough air to make the boats move. There was just enough wind to make it round the one lap windward-leeward course. The highlight of the day occurred when the paddleboat that was being used as the Race Committee start/finish boat started to sink. It was replaced with a hard bottom inflatable just in time. One round-robin was completed. There were no protests.
Sunday: Two races were completed in each Division in conditions which were the same as Saturday. Thanks to Regatta Chair, Heather Giacone and the rest of the Purdue Sailing team for a fine regatta under difficult conditions.

Saturday saw temperatures in the 80's and no wind until 1:00 when a light breeze from the NW began filling in. A sailors went out completing one race in 5 knot breeze and starting a second during which the breeze died and the race was abandoned. The regatta went under postponement until 4:00 when it was called for the day due to lack of wind.
Sunday was again hot and windless. At noon the regatta was called.
Thanks to the judges Andrew Kiener, George Griswold, and Fred Horwitz, PRO Paul Bargren, and the sailors for attending and being incredibly patient with the weather throughout the weekend.

September 12 - 13, 2009
Saturday: Eight races were completed in both divisions today which completes an official regatta for the seven boat fleet. A decision was made at the end of the day to continue racing on Sunday due to the promise of good weather and strong wind. No protests or breakdowns were filed and capsizes were minimal and quickly corrected. The weather was sunny and the wind was constant although a little shifty at about 6 - 9 knots. We look forward to more good weather tomorrow.
Sunday: Four additional races were sailed in each division for a total of 12 races in A's and B's. Miami University Sailing Team would like to thank everyone who came out and made it a great regatta, especially teams who brought extra sails.

Admiral’s Cup
Great Lakes Maritime Academy
September 12-13, 2009
The Admiral's Cup was graced with warm weather, but unfortunately light wind. The first day of racing was postponed until noon. A sea breeze filled in and four races could be run before the end of the day. Sunday's weather was very similar but with even lighter air. Two races were held and the regatta finished up with six races overall.

Davis Cup
University of Iowa
September 19- 20, 2009
Saturday was a light sailing day but we managed to get six races in. All of which were very competitive and included some close finishes and tight starts.
Sunday was a bit heavier and still a bit closer. We got two B-fleet rotations in since we ended Saturday with A-Fleet due to low winds. All of these races we close but ultimately Michigan came out on top, above Iowa by two points and Northwestern by 12. Thanks to all of those who came out and a special thanks to all those who helped out. Can't wait to see you all next year or in the spring for Hawkeye Invitational.

MCSA Sloop Championship
Detroit Yacht Club
September 19-20, 2009
Saturday: Sailors were greeted with an east wind of about 5-8 on the Detroit River with a current of about 2.5 running with the wind. PRO Ed Theisen set a windward-leeward course twice around. Minnesota retired after suffering a broken main halyard and Miami took a Yellow flag for a rules violation in the first race. Although the fleet soon learned the tactic of dip starting in the current, Purdue was hailed as OCS in Race 3. The wind was quite steady indirection and strength during the day until race 8 which was as started at 6:17 pm. As the Sun started to settle in the west, the wind strength decreased making it hard to beat against the current. The race finished with a few minutes left on the 45 minute time limit just in time to get the boats put away before dark.
Toledo started with a win in race one and added four first place finishes during the day to be 18 points up on a pack of team headed by Northwestern. Illinois, Miami, Marquette, and Northwestern occupied second place in the standings during the day. Michigan and Wisconsin also were close to second in the standings making for a very competitive regatta for second place and a berth to the ICSA Sloop Championship.
Sunday: The first race was a windward-leeward once around due to the low pressure of about 5 from the east. The wind picked up for the remaining 4 races permitting the course to be lengthened to twice around. Racing was completed about 2 p.m.
Toledo continued their winning ways with three more bullets in the five races. Second place was still up for grabs with Wisconsin, Michigan and Northwestern all taking turns at holding this spot in the standings. Bowling Green had a couple of good races and threatened to join the group challenging for second place. Marquette dropped in the standings when there skipper became ill an they had to leave the event giving them DNS scores for all five of the last races.
It was a clinic put on by Toledo that was the highlight of the event. Skipper Ryan Lashaway credited the good showing to having sailed in the US Singlehanded Championship in late July at the Detroit Yacht Club and the Rolex Clinic from that event which dealt with sailing in current. He also credited the practice that the team had done in Flying Scots as an important part in their victory.
