A New Semester Brings the Start of a New Season
Anne Scheurerman

Hello MCSA! I hope everyone had a great summer with a lot of sailing. Now its about that time to start collegiate sailing and recruiting new sailors for each team. As a district, we need to work, this semester, to develop our sailors and increase the level of competition in the Midwest.

I'll see you at the Harken Clinic!! Good luck at Fall Fury!

2002 MCSA Team Race Championship
for the George H. Griswold Trophy
University of Minnesota
April 27-28,2002

Sunday started with boats and docks loaded with 4 inches of snow. Teams came and started bailing the snow out of the boats. George Griswold dislocated his shoulder and was taken to the hospital (but made his flight home). The rigging and bailing took extra time causing races to start at 10:15 a.m. The wind was about 12 mph for the start of the third round-robin. Races got off with the wind slowly dying throughout the day. The championship was decided in Race 43 when Minnesota beat Michigan in a close race to take first place overall. This win also gave Wisconsin second overall. If Michigan would have won, there would have been a three way tie for first place after 45 races, but Minnesota went undefeated for the day and won the event. All competitors sailed all races in the third round-robin. There were no protests for the day.

The PRO was former MCSA Commodore Blake Middleton with assistance from Ann Sparks, Kelly Nichols, Chris Humphrey, Ben Burgum, Alex Symes, and Zach Coelius. The Protest Committee was George Griswold, Bruce Martinson and Bert Foster. The Championship Chairnan was George Griswold. The Event Chairman was C. Anne Scheuerman. There were 30 races sailed on Saturday and 15 races on Sunday, all on Triangle courses. Winds Saturday were East 14-20 with notably higher gusts, Sunday were North 4-14 and diminishing. It was cloudy and COLD!

The University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin qualified to represent the MCSA at the 2002 ICSA Team Race Championship at the University of Hawaii.

Wisconsin Wins MCSA Dinghy Championship
University of Wisconsin
May 4-5, 2002

The conditions were outstanding for the MCSA's Dinghy Championship. After a cold and cloudy spring the sun came out, temperatures were in the 60's, and sailing was pleasurable. In SW winds of 5-15 with occasional gusts, 16 races were sailed on Saturday. Wisconsin was in the lead, with Michigan 2nd just two points ahead of Ohio State, and Minnesota 14 points back due to a capsize in the last set of the day. Ohio U. was DSQ from Race 6A.

Minnesota came back in the lighter southerly winds on Sunday, coming just 1 point short at the conclusion of racing. Minnesota filed a protest against Michigan in Race 18B, but the Jury declared the protest closed because Minnesota failed to notify the Michigan skipper of the intent to protest after finishing. Minnesota then requested that the hearing be reopened, but the Jury determined no new significant evidence was presented and denied the request. Wisconsin and Michigan earned the MCSA's 2 berths to the ICSA Co-ed Dinghy Championship in Hawaii.

The Championship Chairman was George Griswold. The PRO was Ray Pingree, a Wisconsin alumnus. The Event Chair was Stacy Tillquist. Coordination was provided by Jamie Gwidt. The Jury was George Griswold, Sander Sundberg and Art Gorov.

Special Events Make The Fall Season Interesting
Tom Martin

The first sloop event is the Star invitational held on September 7-8 at Island Bay Yacht Club in Springfield, Illinois. I strongly encourage teams that are going to this event to get practice time in a Star before heading to Springfield. Also remember that there is a certification clinic that will be held at Island Bay YC on Friday, September 6th. The next in-district sloop event is the MCSA Sloop Championships held at Detroit Yacht Club in Flying Scots on September 21-22. If you can find a way to practice in a Flying Scot it will greatly help you in this competitive event. If this isn't possible try getting some practice time in a smaller one-design dinghy with a spinnaker. The top two teams in this event get to compete at the ICSA Sloop Championships held on November 1-3 at New York Yacht Club in Sonars.

The big singlehanded event this fall is the Singlehanded Championships held on September 28-29 at Northwestern. This event will be held in Laser full rigs for both the Men's and Women's events. Lots of practice time in Lasers will definitely help you in this event. The top finishers in both men's and women's divisions will go on to compete in the ICSA Singlehanded Championships in Houston Yacht Club on November 8-10.

There is only one women's event this fall that will be held at Marquette (not Notre Dame as in the Schedule) on October 26-27. Encourage all of your women skippers to attend this regatta. Hopefully a good turn out for this year's event will encourage other schools to host women's regattas in the fall next year. This might be the only opportunity our women's skippers have to see who the competition is before the MCSA Women's Championship next spring.

Lastly, there are two extremely important clinics that need to be taken seriously. First is the Harken Clinic held at Wisconsin on September 14-15. Wisconsin and the MCSA have worked hard to bring in top coaches to teach this clinic. There will be two divisions for this clinic, so encourage not only your top sailors to go but also your less experienced sailors to participate. The advanced clinic will be in 420's and the beginning clinic will be in Tech Dinghies. I guarantee that this clinic will be very beneficial to all who attend! There is another very important team race clinic being put on by Michigan on November 9-10. You don't even need to have three skippers and three crews because schools may combine to form a "team." Participation in this clinic will help everyone get to know basic team racing moves and situations. This will be a great event and will help the District as a whole when it comes to team racing regattas in the spring.

Let's make sure that we get good participation at each of these special events.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY WINS

2002 ICSA TEAM RACE CHAMPIONSHIP

June 5-7, 2002

Harvard University won the 2002 ICSA Team Race Championship with a perfect record of 17 wins and no losses. Tufts University was second at 13-4, followed by Georgetown, with 12 –5. College of Charleston completed the top four with a cumulative 8-9 record. The event was sailed at Keehi Lagoon on the south shore of Oahu with air and water temperatures of eighty degrees. The regatta was run using the facilities of the Honolulu Community College Marine Education and Training Center. The first two days of racing saw each team sail a round robin involving a match with each of the other 11 teams. Each team was composed of three boats. The top four teams sailed two "final four" round robins to determine the winner. Two of the "final four" races had to be re-sailed as two matches on the same course became intermixed before the tradewinds of 10+ knots started later in the day.

Minnesota beat Wisconsin and Texas. Wisconsin was close in many of its matches, but was unable to find a winning combination.

ST. MARY'S WINS

ICSA/GILL CO-ED DINGHY CHAMPIONSHIP

June 5 – 7, 2002

St. Mary's College of Maryland won the 2002 ICSA / Gill North American Co-ed Dinghy Championship with 203 points. Their average finish position was 5.64 and indication of the closeness of the competition. St. Marys also won the ICSA Dinghy Championship in 2000. Harvard University finished a close second with 210 points, followed by regatta host University of Hawaii, with 219 points. Eighteen teams participated in the event held in Collegiate Flying Junors.

St. Mary's was in eighth place after the first day of competition, but didn't lose hope, and climbed to the lead in the second day, On the last day of racing they lost the lead only to get it back at in the last two races Harvard had a two-point lead over St. Mary's going into the final pair of B-division races, with Hawaii another two points back. In Race 17B St. Marys made up five points to take a 3 point lead. Both St. Mary's and Harvard were over early at the start of the final race but St. Marys was able to finish 7th to secure the regatta.

The breeze was shifty with noticeable pufts and ranged from five to fifteen knots throughout the event. The Keehi Lagoon site of the Honolulu Community College Marine Education and Training Center on the south shore of Oahu was popular with competitors and spectators for its 80-degree air and water temperatures.

Boats and Equipment
Jack Gaither

It is time for teams to finalize their 2003 boat purchase commitments. Please contact Gail or myself for further information regarding the purchase. I often receive e-mails from various teams asking for information about boat manufacturers, companies that do boat repair, and various other equipment related questions. In the coming weeks I will be asking for your help to gather information regarding various companies that your team may have dealt with. I am attempting to compile information regarding sailing companies and then make this information available for all of our member teams. Finally, as our teams grow we always gain new people to the sport. It is important that we continue to teach these people so as to provide a long and lasting membership to the sailing community. If people are interested in finding out more information about the sport or a specific boat, they should check the class website or the governing bodies website for more information.

2001-2002 ICSA Fowle Trophy Standings

The Fowle Trophy honors the late Graduate Secretary of the New England district and Executive Vice President of ICYRA. Len served in both posts until his death in 1973, and his devotion to college sailing is without match. College sailing today had its very beginnings in the organizational ability and personal drive of this one man. The Fowle Trophy is awarded based on the best overall performance which includes the six North American Championships: Men's Singlehandeds, Women's Singlehandeds, Sloops, Women's Dinghies, Team Race, and Co-ed Dinghies.

COLLEGE SAILOR OF THE YEAR: The Everett B. Morris Trophy

Harvard University graduating senior Sean Doyle (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was selected as the College Sailor of the Year for 2001-2002. A finalist for the award in 2000 -2001, Doyle was also named an All-American for the third year running. Doyle had a standout senior year placing fifth at last fall's ICSA Singlehanded Championship, then skippered the team to its second straight Sloop Championship win. At the spring championships in Hawaii, he helped the Crimson to its first-ever ICSA Team Race Championship, which they claimed by posting a perfect 17-0 score.

Doyle is the third in a well-known sailing family to earn the coveted College Sailor of the Year honors. His father, Richard (former MCSA Commodore), received the accolade his senior year (1970) at Notre Dame, and his uncle, Robbie, won it his senior year (1971) at Harvard. His sister is Stephanie Doyle another former MCSA Commodore.
