MCSA Team Race Championship
University of Michigan
May 8-9, 2004
Saturday: The wind for Saturday was light to non-existant and shifty on Baseline lake. A double round robin was attempted but not completed so one round of 21 races was scored for the 7 team fleet.
Sunday: A double round robin final four was sailed on a beautiful, sunny day. The wind was ESE shifting to SE with light and puffy conditions. All 12 races were sailed with only minimal delays due to the constantly shifting wind. The Modified Observer System was used for this event and was rather effective at minimizing protests.
The competition was tight between Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota for the 2 berths to the ICSA Team Race Championship. The regatta was actually decided in a sail-off between Wisconsin and Michigan for who would be first and second for the event, with Michigan winning the sail-off in a very tight race.
Congratulations to both Michigan and Wisconsin for qualifying for the ICSA Team Race Championship at Cascade Locks, OR.
Special Thanks to our observers volunteering their time this weekend: George Griswold, Ali Bell, Joe Harris, Chris Kent, Clark Chapin
Also thanks to all the Michigan Sailing Team members who helped make this event a success as well as our volunteer PRO Tom Vickers.

May 26-28, 2004
Wednesday: The morning began with gray skies and rain, with breeze from the west at 8-10 knots. Racing started around noon with wind from the west at 8-10 knots, and rain. Courses sailed were windward-leeward twice around, Olympics and Gold Cups. By the end of the day, Navy had pulled ahead by 11 points, leaving Yale and ODU fighting for second and third. Racers in 4B experienced a squall bringing rain and winds at 15-20 knots, which left 10 boats capsized. After all boats were righted, a brief break, and heavy crews in the boats, A division went back out for 2 races in a 10-15 knot breeze and very light rain.
Thursday: The day started with light rain and no wind, followed by more light rain and still no wind. Sailors stayed busy playing cards, Frisbee and constructing vehicles out of dollies and racing them down the hill. Sailing finally started with B division at 4:35. Conditions were raining and the breeze was 5-10 knots from the west. A total of 8 races were sailed. Standings were tight, with Yale taking the lead from Navy. The fleet is close with places 3-11 separated by only 28 points.
Friday: After a late night of protest hearings, followed by an early morning of protest hearings, sailing started with A division on the water. With half of the races left to sail, there was plenty of time for a lead change. Positions 3-8 were only separated by 13 points, proving how close the competition for this event was. B went back out for 1 race before the rain came back, and the wind stopped. B division's second race of the day (10th overall) produced very close racing. After two more A races in blue skies with rain, and wind from the west at 5-10 knots, Hawaii and Navy were tied for second. After B finished their next rotation, Navy slid back into the number 2 spot. A division finished racing at 4:35. Yale clinched first place with 1 race left to go. A mere 6 points separate 2nd place from 6th place. All teams watched anxiously as B went out for their last race. Overall very close final results with places 5,6 and 7 within striking distance of 3rd. 26 races sailed in all.

June 2-4, 2004
Wednesday: Sailors were greeted with sunny skies and no wind, but the breeze filled in just in time for some practice before starting the races around noon. After 4 races sailed in each division, standings were relatively tight with Dartmouth, Hawaii and Georgetown leading the pack.. Winds were consistent 8-12 from the west all day, with lighter current than the last week.
Thursday: Racing got underway at 11:00 AM to sunny skies and 8-12 knots of breeze from the west. After the first 2 races of the day, Hawaii took the lead over Dartmouth, and held on for the rest of the day. Around 4:30 the breeze picked up to 18-24, providing the heavier crews a chance to get out on the water.
Friday: Racing started around 10 AM, with B division on the water first. B finished one race in light air before the wind died and they were forced to come in. After some time on the shore, they finished their set. The wind built throughout the day for perfect Gorge conditions of 18-24 knots from the west. In total, 10 races were sailed today to complete the regatta by 5:00. There were several redresses filed along with a few protests.

2003-2004 ICSA Fowle Trophy Standings
The Fowle Trophy honors the late Graduate Secretary of the New England district and Executive Vice President of ICYRA. Len served in both posts until his death in 1973, and his devotion to college sailing is without match. College sailing today had its very beginnings in the organizational ability and personal drive of this one man. The Fowle Trophy is awarded based on the best overall performance which includes the six North American Championships: Men's Singlehandeds, Women's Singlehandeds, Sloops, Women's Dinghies, Team Race, and Coed Dinghies.

Important Information For the Fall Season
Paul Kobs
Welcome back to another season of collegiate sailing. Please take a moment to go through the following checklist to ensure that you and your organization are officially ready to compete!
Each team must update their contact information. This will now be conducted online through the Website, just visit
http://www.mcsasail.org/AnnualReport. You should also ensure that your information with the ICSA Database is up to date and accurate, visit
http://www.collegesailing.org/directory/district.asp?Dist=MCSA
Make sure that you are registered and have indicated eligibility for the upcoming season through the ICSA individual directory system
http://www.collegesailing.org/directory/individual/
If you should be hosting an event this season, please note that all the information you will need is available on the website at
http://www.mcsasail.org/RegattaHostMaterials.
As always, please feel free to contact me with questions.
The MCSA's New Website is Up and Running
Through the efforts of Tom McGrath and Chris Metcalf and George Griswold the MCSA has a new website. You will find it at:
http://www.mcsasail.org/
The new banner will greet you:
Each of the three basic categories of users have been set out under the banner. Each has a dropdown box which will give direction to that category of user. Feel free to explore each of the categories, who knows you might find something interesting.
The Team Members Category is designed to be used by individuals who are already involved in collegiate sailing in the Midwest. There is a lot of information in the website for individuals participating in Intercollegiate Sailing in the Midwest. The design was developed to get the user to the information rapidly using sub-pages for branching to specific topics or documents.
The second category of users is the Afterguard. The MCSA believes that former MCSA and other collegiate sailors living in the Midwest are an important part of Collegiate sailing. Without the help of many individuals most who are former collegiate sailors or friends of collegiate sailing, college sailing would not be the exceptional sport that it is today. There is a substantial space which is available to those individuals who would want to provide a more formal organization to Afterguard activities. This area of the website needs to be developed, but it needs individuals who enjoy helping college students achive their sailing dreams. If you have interest in this area contact Gail Turluck, or one of the Officers.
The third category of users is that of a visitor. Visitors are all of those individuals who don't fit one of the other categories. The goal is to make a user visiting the site welcome and to expand their interest in collegiate sailing. For this reason there are some very elementary topics as well as some which present an overview of what is happening in intercollegiate sailing in the Midwest. There is information about how to become a participant in sailing at a Midwest school. We think that collegiate sailing in the Midwest is something that can be fun for everyone, and want to be able to convince the users of the website that they should join in too.
For those users who are already familiar with the website a Quick access Navigation Bar has been placed down the left-hand side of the Home Page. This allows immediate access to frequently used items. There is quick access to the information about each school so that Names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses can be easily found. A quick access to Racing information provides information on the MCSA Racing Schedule and results of regattas in which MCSA Teams participated. There is an item which gives quick access to all the forms which are commonly used. Most forms are either down loadable, or fill in the blank on the screen so that they can be sent in paperless manner. There is access to an on line Forum so that users can express their thoughts on topics of interest to collegiate sailors. Officer information is provided so that if a user wants to contact an Officer of the Association that they will be able to do so easily and quickly.
The box at the bottom of the Navigation bar is probably the most useful of the items listed as it allows the user to search the entire website for any topic, word or phrase. The search provides a listing of each item in which the request appears.
As with any living thing, this website will not be perfect, but Tom, Chris and myself feel that it is a step in the right direction. Positive suggestions should be addressed to the new Webmaster. George Griswold
Commodore: Alex Symes
School is starting and with that is the start of the fall sailing season. Fall is a time for change and we have made some changes in the MCSA.
As you see, we have changed our website significantly. These changes were brought to you buy the website team, George, Chris Metcalf and Tom McGrath. I hope you like the new layout.
We also have changed Publicity Secretaries. Jane Ventresca from the Miami University will be replacing Danielle Linderman for the rest of the year. Danielle will be studying in London for the Fall Semester.
Finally, we have made some changes with the Policy Handbook. The new version is cleaner and simpler and you should check it out on the website.
Now how is your team going to change for the better this fall. You should all develop some goals for the new season relating to the performance of your team. I have three goals that I would like to have all teams accomplish this season.
First, do not back out of the regattas for which you registered. Do everything that you can to find the extra crew or boat that you need to attend each regatta. If you are having trouble finding a boat, communicate with the Executive Board; we are here to help.
Second, increase your practice time. This is the number one way to improve your results. Take practice time seriously and try to find someone to organize the practice. Try to find a Coach! For help with that, contact Brent Ostbye, the head of the MCSA competition committee, at brentostbye@hotmail.com
Third, use the next semester as a time to learn to fundraise effectively. Figure out how to make the carwash an effective use of your time, or how to go after corporations for the big money. Knowing how to fundraise effectively is not only a great tool for your team, it is also useful in the post-collegiate work place.
I am excited for this fall.
I will leave you all with a haiku for this fall season:
Fall is coming soon
Publicity goes to Jane
Practice your sailing
I will see you all on the water.
