<b>Fall 2005: Regatta Reminders<b>
Mary Weaver, Race Chair
As the first of our fall regattas approaches, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of some things that will make the season more fun by helping things run as smoothly as possible.
NORs: Sometimes these buggers really sneak up on you and have a tendency to be forgotten in all the hustle and bustle of regatta planning, but it is very important that the NORs are sent to the Race Chair (that’s me!) one month before the regatta. This way attending teams have plenty of time to make plans and ensure they will be able to attend before the drop deadline. (It also helps the host school by forcing you to plan things in advance rather than letting them go until the last minute.) Also, I encourage everyone to look at the NOR for every regatta because mistakes do happen, and even if you don’t think your team is signed up, you will be held responsible for being there if you are listed as a team expected to attend on the official NOR.
Trailering: Ugh! I know we all hate this one, but at least it’s not too complicated. If you are signed up as a team that needs to tow, then you are responsible for getting a boat there. Whether you tow it yourself, or you find another team that is willing to trade a favor and bring one for you, it is your team’s responsibility to make sure it gets there.
Changes to the Schedule: As there have been a few changes to the schedule for this season and hence there may be some confusion about what is happening when, I want to clear things up and make sure everyone has the correct dates:
Spartan Singles: September 17-18, 2005 Cedarfest: October 1-2, 2005
MCSA Team Race Championship
Northwestern University
May 7-8, 2005
Saturday: Today was marked by colder than expected temperatures and consistent wind of 14 knots out of the North. Heavy fog and a 3' chop made spotting marks difficult. A round robin of 36 races was completed using digital N courses and limited umpiring. Rotations were done on the water.
Sunday: A double round robin final four was sailed on a beautiful sunny day. The wind was light and shifty with wind of 4-6 knots out of the S-SE and the lake had minimal chop.
Special thanks to our judges RJ Wolney, Andy Graff, George Griswold and John Porter, and to our PRO Allison Robin. We'd also like to thank the owners and crew of Intangible, Tomorrow's Sunshine, Caress and New World, for coming up to help us with rotations.

2005 ISCA Womens Dinghy Champs
University of Texas
June 1,2,3
The first day of the ICSA Women's Dinghy Championships ended with only 4 races completed (2 in each division) due to difficult light and shifty wind conditions. Beautiful clear skies in 80+ degree air temp and 75+ degree water on Lake Travis made for a great day lakeside. The University of Texas Sailing Team and the volunteers and facilities from Austin Yacht Club served up awesome Southern hospitality to the 18 Women's teams from around the Country. Charleston and Harvard were tied in the lead.
Day two produced a full day of racing. Ten races for each division were completed. The breeze was fairly constant throughout the day and averaged just a bit over 10 knots, with a maximum-recorded gust of 18.2 knots. The high for the day was 87 F. Harvard and Charleston battled back and forth all day long, with Harvard holding a slight lead as the day came to a close.
The third and final day's weather was overall very uncooperative, and allowed a total of only 2 races in each class to be completed. Delays were caused by both a lack of wind and thunderstorms that moved into the area in the early afternoon. Harvard was able to hold off all other competitors and finish at the top of a very competitive field. Adapted from ICSA web content by Mike Segerblom and James Morley

2005 ICSA/Layline Team Racing Championship
University of Texas
June 5,6, 7
Day one - June 5. Thanks to a full day of GREAT weather, 54 races were run today at Lake Travis. The winds were fairly constant out of the southeast. Many spectators were on hand for the event, many floating in the lake to cool off and enjoy the Texas sun. ESPN's camera crews were on site and installed cameras and microphones on the boats to try and give the fans of college sailing a first-hand view into excitement and intensity of team racing competition. The footage was assembled into a half hour program to air on ESPN U.
Day two - June 6. Winds were 11.3 kts and out of the SE, with a temperature of 93 F. The eight teams in the Championship fleet completed one of the two round robins that were scheduled for them. Charleston won the Consolation round robin for the six teams which didn't make the cut into the Championship group.
Day three - June 7. The teams were narrowed down from 8 to 4 after finishing the second Championship round in the morning, with Yale, USC, Harvard, and Hobart/William Smith advancing to the Final Four round robin. Hobart/William Smith College won the ICSA/Layline Team Race Championship and the Walter C. Wood Trophy. Chief Judge, Bryan McDonald? ordred the On-the-water judges increased to three judges' boats per race in order to arbitrate the increasingly competitive races during the Final Four races.
The Team Racing banquet was held on the patio of Austin Yacht Club to the tune of country music, family style BBQ, pinatas, and (of course) a moonwalk. Texas was able to show the rest of the country "how it's done down South" as festivities continued until the wee hours of the morning.

2005 ICSA/Gill NA Coed Dinghy Champs
University of Texas
June 8-10
Racing began after the Competitor's meeting and a short inspirational speech by Gill's North American president Jerry Richards, who was disappointed that he could only stay for one of the three days of the event. With continuing luck on the weather front (sunny skies, 10-18 knots of wind, high of 95), six races were run in each division, producing the following five top teams, in order, Hawaii, Hobart/William Smith, Dartmouth followed by Yale and Harvard. One Hawaiian competitor put it, "Dude, this is awesome!"
Day two was a good day for heavy air crews as the winds became a steady 18 kts from the SSE and the teams battled for position throughout the day. There were several lead changes throughout the day as Dartmouth, Hawaii, and Hobart/William Smith each held the top place at one time or another.
Day three - Winning their second championship this year, Hobart & William Smith took this year's title Keeping their over-earlies to a minimum and sailing fairly consistent races the Hobart/Wm Smith team was able to average a 6th place finish over all their races to win the title. The high 18-knot winds with 25-knot gusts were not enough to dampen their pristine sailing abilities.
