MCSA Womens Championships 2008
University of Michigan
May 3-4, 2008:
Day 1: Racing started around 9:30 am in 5-8 kts of wind. 4 races were completed in each division before increasing winds forced a postponement around 2:30 pm. Racing resumed at 3:15 pm, with 6 races completed in A division. Race 6B was abandoned due to increasing winds, and racing was eventually postponed for the day around 4:30 pm. Currently, Wisconsin is in 1st place, with Michigan, Minnesota and Northwestern locked in a tight battle for 2nd place. Day 2: Racing resumed at 9:45 am today in 5-7 kts of wind. During the resail of 6B, the wind dropped off. Racing was postponed until 1100 to allow the wind to fill in, eventually reaching 10-12 kts at the conclusion of the rotation. One protest was filed, but was deemed invalid and thrown out. Thanks to our judges George Griswold, Brian Ebner and Tom Vickers. Congratulations to the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University for qualifying for the ICSA Womens National Championship.

May 10-11, 2008
This Mother's Day weekend had its good weather and its bad weather. On Saturday, sailors experienced 3-8 knot winds from the southeast, but were heavily rained on all day. Despite the rain, 14 races were completed. Sunday's weather was perfect for spring sailing: sunny skies, 50 degree emperatures, and north winds of 12-15 knots. Racing finished before 1, hopefully leaving everyone time to celebrate with their mothers.
Congratulations to UMN 1 for winning, and to UMN 2 and Northwestern 1 for finishing second and third respectively.

Wisconsin Womens Team Does Well
ICSA Womens National Championship
May 26-28, 2008
Newport Rhode Island
Boston College Eagles Triumph in Dramatic Fashion, snatching 2008 ICSA Women's National Championship Title from Brown University in Final Race.
Skipper Leigh Kempton sailing with Emily Flint help secure the win with three bullets in four races. Martha Pitt and Lily Beck also sailed strong for the Eagles, placing second in their division.
For the Brown Bears, who were leading the Eagles by 2 points with a race to go, this year's finish is bittersweet but full of promise. The Bears will return skippers Charlotte Lipschitz and Elizabeth Barry, along with all but one of the team's crews. Barry proved to be the low point star of the Championships, winning B Division with a total of 68 points. Her last day was her most dominant with four 1st place finishes in four races. Barry is first year at Brown.
Yale finished third as skipper Jane Macky led A Division with a division low 80 points. The Lady Bulldogs had been up by as many 27 during the second day, and led going into Wednesday's final races. But difficulties in the later races undid them, as BC and Brown sharpened their results. Stanford improved to 4th on the regatta, after sitting outside the top five for the bulk of the event. Charleston managed to steal into the fifth position amongst a very strong final set.

ICSA Gill Dinghy National Champions
Newport, Rhode Island
June 2-4, 2008
Narragansett Bay provided the venue for this years College Dinghy Championship. Scheduled from June 2-4 the question became whether or not Boston College could come up with another win to match the wins that they had achieved in the ICSA Womens and Team Racing Championships just a few days earlier and duplicate a feat that hand had only been accomplished once before by the 1991 Navy Team.
The event had a slow beginning with a postponement ordered by the Race Committee for a lack of wind on the first day. However, with patience a number of races were sailed to keep the event on track.
The teams began to sort themselves out on the second day with Boston College taking a small lead at the end of the day. The competition was quite intense with a number of different teams winning races. However, the Georgetown team had worked it way to the top and lead by 20 points over Boston College with four races to go on the final day.
On the final day Boston College made an effort to close the gap on Georgetown, but the Georgetown team responded and held on actually widening the gap by the end of the regatta.
Charleston protested St. Mary's for a leeward mark rounding incident which resulted in St. Mary's being disqualifed and dropping to third place overall. Boston College taking the second place finish.
