Icebreaker
Notre Dame
3/15/08
This weekend we hosted our annual Freshmen Icebreaker regatta. The weather was cloudy with high 30s-low 40s on Saturday with wind blowing from 1-6mph out of the north. We completed 20 races in total. We finished the regatta after the first day due to forecasts of even less breeze on Sunday. Thanks for all the teams who decided to participate this year. It was a lot of fun to get back out and do some sailing. The results are attached.

Saturday: Sailors arrived to a light easterly that quickly died off. After a 2 hour wait, a beautiful sea breeze filled in and we were able to complete 6 races in each division. Courses were W/L and Gold Cups.
Sunday: Winds were out of the NE around 10 kts all day and temps topped out around 80, making a perfect day for sailing. Courses were W/L twice around and 6 races were completed in each division. One protest was filed, resulting in an RAF.
Thanks to all the Eckerd sailors who helped run a very smooth event, and special thanks to our judges, Tom and Barbara Farquhar and Ann Newton, and to Bill Stickley for taking some great photos.
Connecticut College was assessed a penalty for not signing the RP Forms.

Admiral Moore Team Race
SUNY Maritime College
March 8-9, 2008
Saturday: Dense fog and a shifty northerly were followed by 20-30 knots Southerly. 35 races were completed with 2 protests filed and one resulting in a DSQ.
Sunday: Overnight, NY Maritime boats were tossed about by 60+ knot winds and all of the water was blown out of the East River resulting in an exceptionally low tide! After straightening out the boats and letting the tide rise, 3 races were sailed in 15-25 knots from the Northwest. When sustained winds increased in the 20+ knot range, racing was cancelled due to wind and cold. The round robin was not completed, so the trophy will read that Mother Nature won the 2008 Admiral Moore.

Saturday: We started our first race at 12:25, after waiting out dense fog in the morning; we started the day with one fleet, A fleet, on the water. The breeze was from SW-WSW @ 10-12. A fleet in FJs was able to complete 2 races before the thick fog rolled in. The first B division race had to be abandoned due to fog.
At 3:00 we started racing again, with B fleet only on the water. B fleet completed their first set in a WNW @ 5-12. A fleet went back on the water @ 3:40 and completed their 3rd race. The breeze picked up, resulting in many of the boats on the water capsizing, races were abandoned for the rest of the day.
A Special Thank You to ALL of the coaches and sailors who were on the water helping to recover capsized boats and sailors. We are hoping to get our fleet of 420s up and running in order to complete the event tommorrow.
Sunday: We got racing started today @ 10:45. The breeze was NNW at 10-15 all day. We started the day sailing modified triangles and moved to trapezoids after the first set in each division. We had 16 teams competing in one fleet of 420s and were able to complete 10 races in each division. A special thank you to Maryland and Navy teams, who volunteered to not sail today, so that the other competitors would not have to have a bye race. We had 4 protests filed, resulting in two DSQs. One redress was granted.

Women running races for Women.
Ali Sharp (Navy coach and SMC alum) ran the competitors meeting setting the tone for a great weekend of racing in tough conditions. PRO-Christine Accettella (ODU) and RC Chair-Melissa Pumphrey (SMC) ran the racing in extremely difficult conditions on the St. Mary's River.
Saturday: Light breezes started Northwest and went right round the dial making mark moving almost fruitless. The crew did an outstanding job while jury chair Barbara Herbig watched attentively.
Sunday: Breeze started North and quickly backed to the Northwest where eventually it built and allowed a full rotation to be completed. After the final race was completed, breeze was holding steady at 15-18 knots.
VERY CLOSE competition came down to the wire. Top three teams were given embroidered gear courtesy of Team One Newport who wanted to show their support of college sailing, and in particular womenΉs college sailing.
Courses were W-4's and 3's with gates. Boats: FJ

Saturday: Day started off with a NNW breeze at 8-12kts in the morning before lunch break. Six races were sailed in each division before lunch. After the break the breeze switched to the NE and we had a battle between the NE and E. We got 4 races off in each division after lunch before the breeze died. One protest was filed resulting in a DSQ. One Rule 42 violation was called resulting in a two-turn alternative penalty.
Sunday: The morning arrived with drizzle, no breeze and a strong flood tide. Around 10:30 the clouds started to break and a fresh NNW breeze filled in at 12-18 kts. Beautiful racing conditions permitted eight races to be sailed in each division capping off an 18 race regatta. One protest was filed resulting in a DSQ. 72nd Boston Dinghy Club Challenge Cup
MIT/Harvard/BU
March 22-23, 2008
The Bulldogs from Yale are held onto their lead over St Marys, MIT, BU and the Crimson in a tightly fought contest on the Charles River.
Saturday- Fourteen races were completed in three divisions of FJs in a gnarly west, northwest breeze from 12-22 knots in low 40 degree temps.
Sunday brought more fickle 5-10 knot breezes from the same direction with temps in the upper 30s. Not a single protest was heard and a couple of breakdown scores were awarded.
B Division sailed in Harvard's FJs with Bern Noack on RC assisted by Alan Palmer and Winston Yam. Harvard's John Stokes updated the scoring program on Saturday and Alex Bick finished it out on Sunday. Fran Charles managed the other race course with A sailing BU's boats and C Division in MIT's colored FJs. BU sailing team members Ben Greenfield and Amanda Johnson weathered the cold in the aluminum finish boat on Saturday and they were replaced by Brandeis coach Tom Robinson along with Brenna Malloy. Harvard sailors Allan Palmer, Lauren Brants, and Grace Charles did RC duty and organized boat launching and retrieval.
Extra thanks go out to our generous judges Clay Johnson, Matt Knowles, Peter Johns and John Pratt for giving up their time to serve the sport. Boats: 3 div FJ

After getting off to a rough start on Saturday, three rotations were sailed in "A" division and two in "B". The delay was caused by a problem with the safety boat. Sailors remained in high spirits despite the long delay. The weather proved favorable with wind averaging 12 knots and the temperature around 53 degrees. One breakdown was awarded due to a faulty downhaul.
On Sunday sailing started at 10:15 and two "B" rotations were sailed and one in "A." Wind was averaging around 7 knots and the temperature was around 45. The rain came in just as teams were packing up.
Special thanks to all of the teams for staying patient while the safety boat problem was addressed, hope everyone had fun.

Saturday: Shifty winds lasted all day, keeping the race committee on it's toes. The collegiate N course was sailed all day long, and 54 races were completed for the day (consisting of 1 complete round robin and starting 9 races in the second). 10 protests were filed and heard, which resulted in 2 DSQs and resail due to a break down.
Sunday: The wind direction shifted during the day. Wind velocities where from 0 to 10 knots. A final four round was sailed with scores from the early round robins combining to make up the final scores. Four protests were heard, resulting in three DSQs.
A special thanks to Judges Morgan Paxhia (05) (sat.), Mike Campbell (04), Kyle Wilson (05) and Jeff Kittredge (07), as well as PRO Greg Seekell (07), for all their help.
