Saturday started out with cloudy skies and light, shifty winds mainly out of the northwest at about 5 mph. As the day progressed the wind died down and after 4 races in A division and 3 races in B division the races for the rest of the day were called due to a lack of wind. No breakdowns nor protests were filed.
Sunday's conditions were overcast and the wind speed varied between 10-15mph, with temperatures in the 40s. B division sailed 3 races while A division sailed 2 races to complete a total of 6 races. There was one breakdown filed after a jib halyard broke. No protests were filed. Courses varied between windward leeward, Triangles, and Modified Olympic. Despite sailing only 6 races the regatta was a success!

Intrepid Trophy
U. S. Naval Academy
April 8-9, 2006
Saturday: 12 Teams showed up at Navy to try their hand at match racing aboard Navy's fleet of Colgate 26s. The day featured challenging conditions and a format unfamiliar to many of the competitors. The first flight saw northwest winds 5 - 8 knots at the start with a dark squall crossing the course mid race. The breeze built to 20 - 25 with higher gusts and shifted right 30 degrees. With some teams unsure of their start sequence, only two matches properly sailed the first flight with Coast Guard topping Cornell and SUNY Maritime besting Army.
Flight two was sailed in 25 knots and a building sea. All four pairs successfully started with Navy topping Army, Michigan State beating Coast Guard, St. Marys on top of Purdue and Webb besting Michigan. Following this flight, racing was suspended and competitors adjourned ashore to dry out and listen in on an impromptu match race basics seminar led by ISAF Umpire Sandy Grosvenor.
The breeze abated sufficiently and competitors were sent back on the water for a third flight which was run in more docile 7 - 17 knots in more protected section of the Severn River.
In flight 3, Navy topped SUNY Maritime, Michigan State beat Cornell, Mass Maritime beat St. Marys, and Michigan beat Webb.
Sunday: What a difference a day makes. Sunday in Annapolis dawned clear and cold for the 12 teams contending for The Intrepid Trophy with shifty northerly winds of 5-15 knots.
4 first round flights were completed with the two top scoring teams from each flight advancing to a final round robin. Navy and Michigan State advanced from Group A while Mass Maritime and St. Mary's advanced from Group B.
After a single round robin final, Navy, Michigan State and Mass Maritime finished in what was determined to be an unbreakable three-way tie for first place at 2-1 with St. Mary's at 0-3 as time for further racing had expired.
It was obvious that every team competing climbed the match race learning curve throughout the weekend as the final round featured tight racing with numerous place changes, penalty inducements and a near photo finish in the last match as Mass Maritime nipped Navy by a quarter length to create the tie situation.
This event would not have been possible without the incredible efforts of the 20 umpires who supported both the Capt. Prosser Team Race Regatta as well as the Intrepid Trophy Match Race event. Including: Angelo Buscemi, Jeff Borland, Sandy Grosvenor, Hugh Elliott, Dan Trammell, Jim Walsh, Mike Jones, Maureen Mills, Sharon Hadsel, Dick Morin, Dave Pyron, Don Becker, Betsy Altman, Jim Capron, Wayne Bretsch, Ian Berman, Ken Ward, Pete Levisic and a few others.
Navy: 4/1 Michigan State 4/1 Mass Maritime 3/2 St Mary's 1/4 Michigan 1/1 Coast Guard 1/1 NY Maritime 1/1 Kings Point 1/1 Cornell 0/2 Army 0/2 Webb 0/2 Purdue 0/2

California's never-ending winter rains held off for Saturday and most of Sunday allowing for a great weekend of racing. After a wind delay Saturday morning, the fleet sailed in 10-12 knots of westerly with a strong ebb making course & start line strategy important. Five races were held. Sunday saw 5-10 knots from the southwest, and a few rainshowers pass by. Courses were windward/Leewards. Thanks to John Craig and the crew of college sailing alums who handled the race committee (& Stanford Alum regatta chair Jeff Condon). No protests filed, one redress granted. Boats: FJ. 10 Races were sailed in each Division.

Gopher Invite
University of Minnesota
4/15/06-4/16/06
The first ever Gopher Invite was a great success. Thanks to much rain the lake thawed just in time for the regatta. Saturday was an amazing day with sunshine and temperatures in the high 70's. Winds were ESE at 10-15. Modified windward leewards courses were sailed. One protest was filed.
Sunday started out with cloudy skies and a slight rain. It moved into another perfect day for sailing with termperatures in the high 60's. Winds were ENE at 20. Modified triangle courses were sailed. Three protests and one breakdown were filed. A great thanks to everyone who help put on this regatta and to West Marine, Harken, Helly Hansen and High Tempo for the prizes that were donated.

Buckeye Intersectional
Ohio State University
April 15-16, 2006
Beautiful weather and for the most part good wind graced us at the Buckeye Intersectional. Winds out of the north on Saturday ranging from 2 to 12 knots. The courses sailed were windward leeward with either 1 or 2 laps depending on the wind conditions. Warm conditions with temperatures in the 70's graced us on both days. One protest was filed and five breakdowns. Eighteen Races were completed. Sunday showed similar weather as the day before with winds at 5-12 from the SW. Temperatures again reached the 70's with bright sunshine. Two laps around the windward leeward course were used for the remaining 6 races. Two breakdowns were filed. Big thanks to everyone who came out and helped as well as to South Alabama, University of Florida, Christopher Newport, and Hamilton, for making the long journey to sail on our inland lake.

Saturday: Day started off in a thick fog bank. The morning was full of OCSs and general recalls due to strong out-going current. Once the breeze and current settled, it was an excellent day racing on the salt pond. Breeze stayed 5 to 8 from the south. Lots of tight mark roundings and close races.
Sunday: Morning opened with strong northwest that slowly went as the day went on. Racers dealt with long dramatic shifts to the left and right of the westerly direction. Courses 4 and 5 were run through out the day. 13 races were completed in each Division.

Regatta Highlights: Saturday morning things started off slow due to a lack of wind. Around 11:00 the winds started to build and racing began for the weekend. Conditions began with light rain, but the skies eventually cleared off leaving behind blue skies and wind. Wind on Saturday was 8-12. All 9 A-division and all 9 B-division races were sailed on Saturday. Courses were modified Windward/Leewards and modified Triangle Windward/Leewards. Two protests and one breakdown were filed. Congratulations to the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin for qualifying for ICSA Women's Nationals. Many thanks to our judges George Griswold, Ed Theisen, and Andrew Lappin for spending their days with us. Thank you also to Diamond Lake Yacht Club once again for allowing us the use of their facilities to host the regatta.

Saturday's Conditions: Winds were out of the west at 5-10 knots and building slightly throughout the warm, sunny morning. By noon winds had reached 15 knots, and shifted clockwise to northerly. During the afternoon the air cooled as the wind clocked further yet, settling finally out of the northeast at under 10 knots. Sailing was picturesque, as Lake Michigan was flat for us, as is rarely the case. One protest was heard and granted, while no breakdowns were filed. We all look forward to tomorrow. But right now, it's to the bars! Sunday's Conditions: At NU's south beach we were fortunate to enjoy yet another warm, sunny day. Winds filled consistently from the west throughout the morning; initially blowing at 12 knots, they built to 20 by noon. When puffs well above 20 were reported, racing for the day was called off, just two races short of completing the full rotation. Neither breakdowns nor protests were filed and sailors were on their way home by 1:00 PM. And a great thanks to our generous sponsors, Red Bull and Hedlund Marine.

Saturday: Easterly Breeze at 7-13 kts. It was an overcast and cold day on the Charles. Very good racing throughout the day with many tight finishes. Courses were long modified windward-leeward with a leeward gate. No breakdowns, one protest, only a couple general recalls, very few individual recalls, no capsizes. It was very nice sailing, except for the cold issue.
Sunday: Easterly at 8-14 kts. Another cold and overcast day with a couple of rain squalls in the afternoon that temporarily dropped the breeze a bit but then back to "breeze on". Boats rotated at the sailing pavilion dock to keep the off-set division toasty warm between races. Courses were set up at the western end of the upper Charles River Basin, sailing windward-leeward twice around, with a leeward gate for the entire day. No breakdowns, two repairs between races, one protest, one capsize, one general recall, few individual recalls. The Sunday starts were very impressive as so many boats, a dozen or more, really nailed the starts each race. There was a sigh of relief from the RC each time, as the fleet held position below the "course side" and avoided numerous general recalls.
Thanks to Judges Fran Charles and Captain John Millar, and the competitors for settling things out on the water and keeping the Judge's workload light. Race Committee: Bradley S. Churchill Boats: FJ

Staying Involved in Sailing After College
Kelly J Nichols
MCSA Intersectional Coordinator
The beauty of sailing is that you do not have to own your own boat to enjoy the sport. Some of us will be fortunate enough to buy boats for ourselves, but the rest of us will have to rely on others to continue our sailing careers. Staying involved in sailing after graduation is easier than one might think. There are many ways to let the fun of college sailing never end.
Local yacht clubs are probably the best place to continue sailing after college. Most clubs offer racing almost every night of the week. They also give one a chance to try a new boat. After sailing dinghy's for 4 (sometimes 5) years it is fun to give the big boats a try. Boat owners are always looking for an experienced hand or some meat for the rail. All you have to do is show up and a boat will find you. It is also a great way to meet new people and network (especially for new grads...you might end up with a job).
Helping out your alma mater is another great way to stay involved. Many teams do not have a coach and could use the extra people to run practice. Not only can you set marks and blow whistles, you can help train incoming members who have not done much sailing. This lets you get out on the water again to break up the monotony of cubical life, but it also helps your team improve and become more competitive (everybody wins!). Even if you just come out once a year to sit on a crash boat once a year for your team's regatta you are still helping out a lot.
For those who have been behind the scenes and know what it takes to make a team run might want to consider a position on the MCSA or ICSA Board as a graduate member. It is the perfect opportunity to stay connected and help the district grow and get better. You don't even have to be elected. There are many positions that just need motivated people. If you are interested you can contact me or Jenn.
The point is sailing doesn't end when you walk across the stage, shake hands and receive your diploma. There are so many opportunities to take what you have learned and continue to put it to good use. If you are unsure where to start looking...just ask...someone will know.
