Wisconsin Qualifies for ICSA Championship
With a ninth place finish in the ICSA Eastern Semi final, Wisconsin qualified for the ICSA Championship proving that it deserves to be ranked as one of the nations top 18 teams. Seniors Rob Pickens and Patti Schmidt lead the Badgers to a convincing finish over many previously ranked teams with the help of outstanding crew work by Kelsey Kramer, and Christine Porter in A Division and Beccah Steffensen in B Division. While Pickens finished 12th in A Division he won race 7 A and was improving as the regatta progressed. Patti Schmidt sailed to a convincing 7th place finish in B Division.
ICSA National Championship Eastern Semifinal
Hobart and William Smith
April 26-27, 2008
Saturday's conditions began with a steady South breeze at 10 to 14 knots. The sun cast its warmth down for 6 races in A division and 4 in B division until scattered thunderstorms brought a halt to our day at around 2:30. There was 1 protest, 1 rule 42 infringement and 1 breakdown filed, which where handled by our wonderful judges George Griswold, Doc Sullivan, and JB Turney. All courses were Windward, Leeward Gate, Windward, finish to Leeward courses on our calm Seneca Lake.
Sunday's conditions provided for 2 races in A Division and 4 in B Division. With a lighter breeze from the South, 3.5 to 6 knots of breeze was noted. The southerly held out until about 1:00 and hinted a North Westerly at about 3:00, but remained only a hint. The same courses were sailed. Thank you to our judges, Jeff Sullivan, our PRO and all of the Hobart and William Smith sailors who helped with race committee! Congratulations to all the teams and to the top 9 teams who qualify for the ICSA Nationals to be held in Newport, RI

MCSA CO-ED DINGHY CHAMPIONSHIP
Columbia Yacht Club
April 12-13, 2008
The University of Minnesota did a fine job in moving this event from their home sailing waters on Lake Minnetonka which had three feet of ice to the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago on short notice. The weather in Chicago on Saturday was sailable with temperatures in the middle 30s and wind from the northeast in the 10-20 range. PRO Ben Bergen was able to get off 8 races in A Division and 6 in B Division. Sunday the wind continued to build from 25 with some gusts recorded at 40 mph. With the temperature being in the high 20s racing was postponed until Noon when it was decided that conditions would not be improving. The scores were readjusted to the point where each Division had sailed 6 races and the Trophies were awarded.
Thanks to the Columbia Yacht Club for supporting the event. Others who assisted on the Race Committee were Evan Quasney, Cappy Capper. The Judges were: Alan Teske, Dennis Bartley, and Don Glazell.

WET YOUR WILLIE
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY
APRIL 19-20, 2008
Saturday Morning started off dead with no wind and cloudy skies. Races were postponed until noon at which point some nice breeze between 8-12 mph moved in. A rotation got in two races, but as the B division was sent out fog moved in heavily to the point nobody could see the windward and leward marks simultaneously. Racing was postponed until 2pm at which point the fog had gotten worse and racing was called for the day.
Sunday was blessed with beautiful weather in the morning as winds between 5-10 mph made racing smooth. Windward-leward races were changed to twice-arounds as the wind continued to build to between 12-15 mph. After mid-morning however, the wind died during the last rotation and made for some interesting racing as northeastern swells rocked boats around. One protest and two requests for redress were filled. The protest resulting in both boats being disqualified because damage and injury occurred and both requests for redress were denied.

Intrepid Trophy
U. S. Naval Academy
April 19-20, 2008
Saturday: PRO Taran Teague and her race committee team were able to complete 7 flights sailing aboard the Academys fleet of Colgate 26s, in light southeasterly breeze on the Severn River just off the Academy seawall. Chief Umpire Angelo Buscemi pulled together a total of 10 umpires from around the country to make the on-water calls. When the dust settled, Navy was on top with 6 wins and 1 loss while St, Marys, KP, Washington College, SUNY and Maine are in a 5 way tie for second each with 5 wins and 2 losses.
Sunday: For the third year straight, the Intrepid Trophy Regatta came down to a tie breaker among the top 4 teams. Maine Maritime, SUNY, KP and Navy each finished the round with 9 wins and 2 losses apiece. The tie was broken first by determining who among the top 4 had more wins against those teams. Both Maine and SUNY had 2 wins while KP and Navy had only one. Maine had beaten SUNY which allowed them to stake claim to the overall title. SUNY wound up second while KP by virtue of beating Navy took third with Navy in fourth.
All of the competitors displayed excellent keelboat skills and most teams had their match race moves in order as well.
The Intrepid Trophy Regatta is applying to ISAF to be recognized as a Grade 3 match race event for this year and the future so competing skippers will ultimately earn ISAF match race ranking.
