Acton Up Regatta
Miami University
September 13-14, 2008
Re-scored?
Saturday sailing went off with no issues whatsoever. The wind was steady around 10 knots, it was sunny and warm. 8 races were sailed and two breakdowns were reported. Sunday winds were considerably heavier. Shifts were large and numerous. After one race, many capsizes, and a broken forestay, the race committee decided to call the regatta. No races were counted on Sunday. Overall it was a successful weekend. Special thinks to everyone who came out for a nice weekend of college sailing.

(RESCORED)
Saturday: Ohio U. was a NO Show. There wasn't enough wind to race on he Detroit River with its over 2 knot current until after lunch. The first race took just under an hour with the fleet having difficulty running against the current. Three other races were completed. There were two Requests for redress of which one was granted.
Sunday: Ohio State was added to the list of No Shows today. The wind was about 7 from the north making it possible to sail windward-leewards twice around. Five races were completed making a total of 9 races for the regatta. There were fourprotests resulting in one DSQ moving Northwestern from first to 5th. The PRO for the event was Ed Theisen and the Judges were George Griswold, Robert DeClerque? and Brian Ebner.
Owens withdrew from all races due to the use of an ineligible contestant
the Judges permission. The Results below indicate the rescored regatta.

Shields Trophy Regatta
US Naval Academy
September 19-20, 2008
High pressure and light air dominated the weekend in Annapolis. Ten Service Academy crews turned up and persevered through 4 races in 2-8 knots of wind on the Chesapeake Bay aboard the Naval Academy's fleet of 44' sloops.
PRO Gene Gibbons managed 3 races on Saturday in a light northerly and a strong ebb. SUNY and Kings Point mastered the conditions best, each earning a first and second in the opening 2 races. SUNY kept going and overcame significant adversity to win race 3 while KP was forced to card a 7th. Cal Maritime exhibited their usual solid consistency posting a 3, 3, 5 to end the day in 3rd.
The forecast for Sunday was not promising and glassy conditions greeted the competitors on the water. PRO Gibbons exhibited great patience in a long postponement and was rewarded with a very light sea breeze before the race start time limit expired. Cal Maritime recovered from a poor start and chipped away at the leaders going on to win the race by a large margin. Coast Guard also came from well back to take 2nd while early race leader Mass Maritime slipped back to 3rd. SUNY had their worst race of the series but heads up sailing and crisp boat handling allowed them to recover to 4th to ice the title by 4 points. KP suffered a poor start and could never recover, scoring a 7th and dropping to 3rd overall.
A huge THANKS! to Gene Gibbons and his very capable crew on the RC and also to judges Maureen Mills and Angelo Buscemi as well as all the many other volunteers who helped make the regatta a success.

September 27-28, 2008
Morris Yacht and Beach Club, City Island, NY - Western Long Island Sound
A steady 8-10 knot breeze from the northeast provided an opportunity to sail 16 of the scheduled 24 races of a double round-robin on Saturday. On Sunday, the breeze lessened to 3-6 knots from the same direction and died during Race 10B. Twenty races were sailed. Breakdown points were awarded in one division. One protest was filed and the protestee retired after finishing. Amazingly, the rain, which had been forecast all weekend, held off until after the last race.
As always, competitors were treated to fantastic Bagels & Cream Cheese from H& H Bagels on Second Avenue; delicious New England Clam Chowder from The Shrimp Box on City Island, and Zagat's ranked "The #1 Cheesecake in New York City" from S&S Bakery in the Bronx. Congratulations to Georgetown for winning this year's competition. The Hoyas take home a "Loaner" plaque, which is passed along to the winner each year, while the "Jesuit Cup" is maintained at the Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center on Fordham's Rose Hill campus.
Loyola was a No Show.

HOOD TROPHY REGATTA
TUFTS UNIVERSITY
September 27-28, 2008
Saturday: 24 teams showed up to beautiful Mystic Lake to find little breeze and moderate rain. By the end of the day, 3 A-division and 2 B-division races were sailed in a 2-4 knot northerly. No protests or breakdowns were filed. Thanks to the throng of Jumbo undergrads and alumni for helping and hanging out, and to everyone who braved the rain to watch the racing from the viewing deck.
Sunday: The lake was glassy and rainy most of the day, though around 2:30pm a 2-5 knot northerly held long enough to get 1 B-division race off. Once again thanks to all for coming down, especially those of you with long drives home. Congrat's to the Yale Bulldogs, who have now earned the title "most hood" until next fall.
